Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction. -

From Shakespeare to Modern Ages La sicilianità di Andrea Camilleri: “La forma dell‟acqua” come modello Dott.ssa Rania Zakaria Abdelsamad Nella mia ricerca, studio la sicilianità di Andrea Camilleri, che ha ottenuto grandi successi letterari con il giallo “La forma dell'acqua” nel 1994. Ha anche creato la serie del commissario Salvo Montalbano, e altri romanzi polizieschi, romanzi e racconti e film sono tutti ambientati in Sicilia. L'ambiente siciliano ha trasformato il destino di queste storie in giro per il mondo, tanto che alcuni critici hanno parlato del vero "caso Camilleri"1. Camilleri è considerato lo scrittore italiano più letto al mondo, con circa 20 milioni di libri venduti nel mondo e tradotti in più lingue2 per non parlare del successo degli adattamenti televisivi. Il concetto di spazio letterario che prevale nelle opere di Camilleri inizia ad essere studiato in modo più sistematico intorno agli anni '60 e '70. Questa tendenza fa parte di una controversia più ampia avviata da tanti studiosi che nel XX secolo hanno discusso se siamo eredi del tempo o abitanti dello spazio. Pertanto, il tempo e lo spazio sono il contenuto principale del testo. Dopo numerosi studi sul concetto di tempo, la priorità è stata data al metodo storico della letteratura, poi sono apparsi i primi studi sulla spazialità, che hanno introdotto anche metodi geografici, e che hanno segnato il primo passo nel campo della geografia letteraria. Often, conspiracy theories work as counter–narratives con- trasting the reassuring oYcial accounts of such shocking happenings. Fictional literature is one of the main channels for the diVusion of con- spiracy theories. Starting from such premises, the essay focuses on a corpus of Italian novels written in the last sixty years. They refer to four of the most upsetting moments of Italian national history (Risorgimento, the fall of Fascism, the “lead years”, and the passage from the first to the second Republic). The analysis concentrates on novels by Umberto Eco, Andrea Camilleri, Leonardo Sciascia, Rino Cammilleri, Carlo Alianel- lo, and Luciano Bianciardi. It singles out diVerent types of conspiracy narratives in contemporary Italian literature, each one characterized by peculiar recurrent motifs and characters. Affresco siciliano o della Bellezza intravista Saggio di filologia camilleriana* GIUSEPPE MARCI Al cielo girgentano il cui azzurro è di un’intensità che fa mancare il fiato È una ragione essenziale quella che ci ha fatto approdare sulla costa della Sicilia, per giungere qui, ad Agrigento e a Porto Empedocle, la Montelusa e la Vigàta di Andrea Camilleri. Sono stati i venti dei vostri 2400 anni di storia a gonfiare le vele della nostra zattera di studi camilleriani, pazientemente costruita nella propinqua isola di Sardegna, pezzo dopo pezzo, nel corso di un quarto di secolo. Negli anni passati abbiamo percorso il Mediterraneo, raggiungendo le sponde europee, quelle dell’Asia, nella terra del Libano; e siamo arrivati in America, nel Messico, in Brasile, soprattutto, dove gli studi camilleriani crescono anche per il seme gettato a Fortaleza dal professor Rafael Ferreira da Silva. Ma, con l’orgoglio di averlo fatto, e con la riconoscenza verso quanti hanno propiziato i risultati, consentendoci di conseguirli, devo dire che io e gli amici coi quali – tutti insieme – siamo giunti alla meta non eravamo appagati: sentivamo che c’era un obiettivo da raggiungere e non per ragioni sentimentali ma per un’inderogabile esigenza conoscitiva. Introducendo un suo volume tradotto in italiano negli ultimi mesi del 2019, John Sutherland ha proposto un concetto che giova richiamare: «Non c’è un lì lì» scrisse sprezzante Gertrude Stein, parigina per scelta, parlando di Oakland, sua città natale. Parole del genere non possono valere per nessuno dei libri presi in esame in questo volume. Alludendo alla mancanza di storia della città californiana, rappresentando la località come anonima, deludente, senza alcun segno distintivo o particolare degno di memoria, con questa locuzione Stein sintetizza sdegnosamente l’indefinitezza del «senso del luogo», di quell’«esserci» fondamentale senza il quale i confini di una città scompaiono1. -

BREVE STORIA DEL PREMIO VITTORINI La prima edizione del Premio letterario nazionale intestato allo scrittore siracusano Elio Vittorini (Siracusa, 1908 – Milano, 1966) ebbe luogo nel 1996, in occasione del trentesimo anniversario della sua morte, per volontà dell’editore Arnaldo Lombardi e dell’Amministrazione Provinciale di Siracusa presieduta dall’Avv. Mario Cavallaro. La cerimonia di premiazione ebbe luogo nella suggestiva sala ipostila del federiciano Castello Maniace. La Commissione giudicatrice, composta da autorevoli figure della cultura letteraria nazionale e presieduta da Natale Tedesco e da Vincenzo Consolo, venne chiamata a premiare tre opere concorrenti, che vennero inviate ad una giuria di lettori per la scelta del super premio. Vennero premiate: Il birraio di Preston di Andrea Camilleri, ancora sconosciuto al grande pubblico, Ritratto veneziano di Gustaw Herling e L’antidoto della malinconia di Piero Meldini. Il superpremio della giuria dei lettori venne conferito a Gustaw Herling. Da allora, e per ben17 edizioni, il Premio è cresciuto sempre più, fino a diventare uno dei premi nazionali molto ambiti, quasi al pari del premio Strega e del premio Campiello. Anche la cerimonia di premiazione, per l’eccessiva partecipazione di pubblico dovette mutare sede e svolgersi all’Anfiteatro romano e successivamente al Teatro Greco dove convenivano circa seimila persone. A presentare il Premio si sono susseguiti Salvo La Rosa, Michele Mirabella, Maurizio Mannoni e, nelle ultime dieci edizioni il compianto Fabrizio Frizzi. Tra gli scrittori premiati nelle varie edizioni ci piace ricordare, tra gli altri, Claudio Piersanti, Amin Maalouf, Giuseppe Montesano, Melania G. Mazzucco, Niccolò Ammaniti, Giuseppe Bonaviri, Paolo Di Stefano, Roberto Alajmo, Maria Attanasio, Emma Dante, Nicola Lagioia, Ruggero Cappuccio, Paolo Sorrentino, Giuseppe Lupo, Carmine Abate, Pino Di Silvestro, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, Roberto Andò, Valeria Parrella, Paolo Di Paolo, ed altri ancora. -

101 Films for Filmmakers
101 (OR SO) FILMS FOR FILMMAKERS The purpose of this list is not to create an exhaustive list of every important film ever made or filmmaker who ever lived. That task would be impossible. The purpose is to create a succinct list of films and filmmakers that have had a major impact on filmmaking. A second purpose is to help contextualize films and filmmakers within the various film movements with which they are associated. The list is organized chronologically, with important film movements (e.g. Italian Neorealism, The French New Wave) inserted at the appropriate time. AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 films are in blue (green if they were on the original 1998 list but were removed for the 10th anniversary list). Guidelines: 1. The majority of filmmakers will be represented by a single film (or two), often their first or first significant one. This does not mean that they made no other worthy films; rather the films listed tend to be monumental films that helped define a genre or period. For example, Arthur Penn made numerous notable films, but his 1967 Bonnie and Clyde ushered in the New Hollywood and changed filmmaking for the next two decades (or more). 2. Some filmmakers do have multiple films listed, but this tends to be reserved for filmmakers who are truly masters of the craft (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick) or filmmakers whose careers have had a long span (e.g. Luis Buñuel, 1928-1977). A few filmmakers who re-invented themselves later in their careers (e.g. David Cronenberg–his early body horror and later psychological dramas) will have multiple films listed, representing each period of their careers. -
