Prototype. Not “concept,” the word carmakers usually use to describe auto show vehicles designed to preview future models. “Prototype,” as in, “a test car built to resemble the real thing as closely as possible.” Which is to say, the Civic Type R Prototype revealed at the Paris Motor Show is all but certainly the spitting image of the production version Honda says will make its way to North American shores in 2017. Based off the five-door Civic Hatchback platform arriving in U.S. showrooms any day now, the new Type R comes equipped with an arsenal of aerodynamic hardware and stylistic badassery not found on more plebeian Hondas. There’s a massive rear wing that look like Voltron’s paraglider, mounted high above a trio of exhaust pipes and an aggro rear fascia. The 20-inch black-and-red wheels sit beneath beefy fender flares, while up front, the traditional red Honda badge reserved for the carmaker’s R models sits between the slotted hood and the angry front fascia with its carbon-fiber splitter. A red accent line stretches around the car’s waterline, while the body comes clad in a brushed aluminum-like finish that Honda says won’t make it to the production car. But all those visual details matter less than the heart of the Civic Type R, which lies beneath that broad hood. Honda’s official press release was mum on the subject of the car’s powertrain, 1 but according to Autocar, Honda aims to crank at least 300 horsepower out of its turbocharged four-cylinder engine—and we've heard it could make as many as 340 ponies. The car will need every pony it can channel to its front tires, as Autocar also claims that Honda wants to use the new Type R to set a new front-wheel-drive Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record. The previous Civic Type R’s time of 7:50 held that honor for almost two years, until the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S knocked it off this spring; if the new red-badged Civic’s powertrain can match its style, we don’t doubt it can save the brand’s honor at the ‘Ring. http://www.thedrive.com/news/5374/honda-civic-type-r-prototype-debuts-in-paris?iid=sr-link1 2 2017 Honda Civic Type R First Look Hottest Civic comes with a turbo, manual transmission March 07, 2017 Honda revealed the production 2017 Civic Type R at the 2017 Geneva auto show, and it will be the first Type R model to arrive in North America when it goes on sale this spring. Available only as a hatchback, the 2017 Honda Civic Type R will be the hottest Civic you can buy. It features a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, and yes, it has Honda's famed VTEC valve timing system. A six-speed manual will be the sole transmission available, and it will have automatic rev-matching for smoother downshifts. The Civic Type R features a unique suspension setup with its own damper, spring, and bushing calibrations, a dual-axis front suspension with aluminum lower arms and steering knuckles, four-wheel adaptive suspension, a helical limited-slip front differential, and an adaptive electric power steering system with variable gear ratio. Stopping power is provided by Brembo brakes in all four corners with 13.8-inch cross-drilled rotors up front and 12.0-inch solid rotors in the back. All models will come standard with 20-inch alloy wheels shod with 245/30R summer performance tires. Compared to the standard Civic hatchback, the Type R has a more rigid body with 38 percent better torsional rigidity and bending rigidity that's been improved by 45 percent. The new Civic Type R is also 35 pounds lighter than Europe-only ninth-generation model, thanks to extensive use of high-strength steel and an aluminum hood. Three driving modes will be available: Comfort, Sport, and +R, all of which adjust steering, throttle response, transmission rev- matching, the adaptive dampers, and the stability control system. 3 When it arrives in the U.S., the 2017 Civic Type R will be available as a loaded variant similar to the range-topping Touring grade in more pedestrian Civics. Standard features include Honda's current infotainment system with a 7.0-inch touchscreen, navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a 540-watt, 12-speaker premium audio system, LED headlights, sport seats with heavier bolstering, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift boot, and a Type R plate on the center console.
