Armenian Church News June 10, 2021 Diocese of the Armenian Church of the United Kingdom and Ireland News for this week Feast of the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin The Feast of the Universal Church of Holy Etchmiadzin (Կաթողիկէ Եկեղեցւոյ Սրբոյ Էջմիածնի Տօն) is celebrated on the second Sunday of Pentecost. The building of Etchmiadzin Cathedral was a significant turning point in the life of the Armenian people. On the occasion of the feast, there was a solemn celebration at St Sarkis Church in London with a special prayer service for the longevity of the Catholicos of all Armenians and for the luminance of the Holy See. London - (09.06.2021) — Dr Sergio La Porta gave a fascinating and nuanced lecture entitled Complicated Communities in Medieval Armenia: Christians and Muslims in Conflict and Cohabitation. This talk was organised virtually by the Diocese of the Armenian Church on 9th June and Armineh Pogosian introduced and moderated the lecture on behalf of the Church. This talk was the sixth in a series of lectures about Armenian religious and cultural heritage in Artsakh sponsored by the Diocese in the United Kingdom, under the auspices of the Primate, His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manukyan. Armenian Church around the world The Catholicos of all Armenians visited Syunik region of Armenia and Artsakh with pontificial visit From the 3rd to the 6th of June, the Catholicos payed a visit to the Syunik region of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh. He has taken the relics of St Grigor the Illuminator to Artsakh to bring people hope and blessings after the devasating war last year. He visited the monastery of Amaras, Gandzasar and prayed in the capital city of Artsakh, Stepanakert. His Holiness's presence encouraged the local people and with his speeches he told them that the Church supports them in these difficult times, that they should not lose hope and again Artsakh will revive. Artsakh Cultural and Spiritual Heritage Thursday, June 24th at 8PM Karen Babayan was born in Iran to Armenian/British parents, moving to Leeds in November 1978 just prior to the Islamic Revolution of January 1979. Babayan is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work engages with audiences through the visual and performing arts and creative writing. Swallows and Armenians, Babayan’s book of short stories and essays explores the relationship between Arthur Ransome and the Altounyan family and firmly re- establishes the connection using newly-appraised correspondence and diaries. In 2016 Babayan gained a PhD in Contemporary Art Practice from Leeds Beckett University and was awarded C-Art Cumbria Artist of the Year. Please click here to find out more and register.
