We hope your experiences here are enjoyable and enable you to feel appreciated for choosing to provide us the opportunity to serve you. Our mission is to provide outstanding customer service via a well-trained and knowledgeable sta, a challenging and well-maintained course, a well-stocked pro shop and quality year-round programs and events. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the scenic 18-hole, par 72 course is a gem of the Air Force and distinguished as the best golf operation in this Service. Patron safety is very important. Please be mindful of weather conditions and advisories, fellow players around you and wildlife on the course. Rules are posted on each golf cart to facilitate pace of play. The Florida climate is extreme; players are encouraged to stay well-hydrated and use adequate sun protection. I hope to see you on the course! Message from the Superintendent The Course at Manatee Cove sits on a total of 140 acres just o the Banana River at the south end of Patrick SFB, FL. There are 36 sand bunkers and four sets of tees to challenge every level of golfer and 29 acres of ponds and canals which are home to several dierent species of sh, turtles and alligators. Water comes in to play on 17 of the 18 holes. The large undulating greens were rebuilt in 2007 utilizing a salt-tolerant turfgrass called Supreme Seashore Paspalum. The fairways and rough are mainly Bermuda grass. A new irrigation system was installed in 2001 featuring 1,155 sprinkler heads throughout the golf course. Pro Shop Open daily, the pro shop oers a variety of well-known quality brands of golf equipment, apparel and gifts at amenable prices. If we don’t have what you need, we will be happy to submit a special order for you. Sales and demo days are oered on a routine basis. Please check our advertising or inquire at the pro shop. Programs Squadron Team Building (UNITE) Currently oered under the AF Chief of Sta’s ‘UNITE’ initiative to bolster morale and camaraderie at the squadron level. Squadron UNITE POCs are required to coordinate the activity through the Community Cohesion Specialist and are highly encouraged to utilize their allotted funds for food and beverage at the Hacker’s Grill to facilitate an all-in-one event. A special UNITE price of $10 per squadron member applies and is adequately covered by the allotted activity funds for activities. Lessons Private and group lessons and week-long clinics are available and taught by a golng professional. Whether you are new to the sport of golf or want to tighten up your game, our instructor can teach to the level desired. More information is available at the pro shop. Tee Times Advance tee times are made available to customers by the type of pass held or military/DoD status. A maximum of three tee times may be made by one customer when doing so by phone; and one tee time when doing so online. Customers must set up an account in the online system with a valid e-mail address and password. We are available and happy to assist setting up the account via phone or in person. For online tee times, there is a maximum of one tee time per person per day. Please use the buddy system when making tee times for a group. Last Month To recap last month, we had a piece from golf expert Adam Young called “Take Control of Your Game” in which he talked about his teaching process and how he helps students learn how to rectify problems without him even being there. We had a Long Drive Q&A with 4-time World Long Drive Champion Sandra Carlborg of Sweden. Some of the things I think that are worth pointing out about Sandra’s Q&A are: • She tests drivers using a Flightscope launch monitor to help dial in her equipment for maximum distance. • She has swung 117.5 mph in the World Championships. To remind you and give you some perspective on that…male amateurs and LPGA players average around 93 mph and PGA TOUR players average around 113 mph. So as you can see, club head speed is very important for distance. • She spends time in the gym to improve her body’s ability to swing. We see this over and over in these Long Drive Q&A’s. No long hitter of this caliber swings this fast naturally. They all work on their bodies. Fortunately, this is something you can do too at any age or skill level. I talked about my in-person experiences and observations attending this year’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol in New Jersey. From a handicap improving standpoint, a couple of the key things that I was reminded of are: • Lots of different swing styles and techniques can be effective on a global level, even if they aren’t the most optimal.

    HOW MEMORIAL DAY HELPED HEAL OUR NATION Many towns lay claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day, the day we remember those who have died in war. Right after the Civil War, local civic groups in a number of communities held a "decoration day" where they went out and placed flowers and wreaths on the graves of fallen soldiers. Generally, these groups were concerned with honoring one side or the other—their own Confederate or Union dead. So it was significant that when General James Garfield presided over the first official Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) in 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery, the 5,000 participants decorated the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.1 When these men fell in battle, they were mortal enemies, fighting for very different causes. More than a few of them had likely shot at each other. Unlike other war-related observances, the veterans groups planning this first official day of remembrance chose to observe it on May 30, a day with no significant battle.2 Normally, war memorials are built by the victors to honor their triumph. But in the years after the War Between the States all dead were honored, giving a chance for the long process of healing to begin. Professor Gregory Bucher notes that this is a lesson we learned from the Romans, who had ample experience with civil war. He writes that when Augustus inherited an empire socially and economically devastated by the wars ending with Antony and Cleopatra, he built a great public plaza, the Forum of Augustus, in an attempt to foster national unity.

The PGA Sports Academy’s focus is to develop core golfers and provide them with pathways to continue to play golf socially or competitively based on each individual’s desire. It is imperative that every parent/participant understands the process of LTAD in the PGA Sports Academy program so that they have a clear understanding of what the PGA Professional is trying to accomplish with each participant. PGA Professionals are strongly encouraged to distribute a copy of The PGA Sports Academy Parent Resource to parents before their child begins the PGA Sports Academy to help outline the curriculum and expectations for the program. Fun – First And Foremost Fun – First and Foremost is our junior golf mantra. We must make sure new golfers are engaged and have a fun, interactive experience. To educate and get juniors involved in golf is the goal, but keeping it fun is the primary focus. It’s crucial that instructors enjoy the experience— juniors will sense your love of the sport and hopefully become smitten for a lifetime. PGA Sports Academy Curriculum Overview: The PGA Sports Academy will help youth learn to play golf and have fun in the process. The PGA Sports Academy has three levels: Player, Sport and Champion. Player Level Objectives • Develop an understanding of the sport of golf; • Learn fundamental movement and motor skills and link them together into the golf swing; • Use ball-striking games such as baseball and hockey to develop hand-eye coordination; • Establish essential safety and etiquette.
