1. 19.1 About Somerset West The town Somerset West is in the , . Organizationally and administratively it is included in the City of metropolitan municipality. It is situated in the area, about 50 kilometers east of Cape Town central city area, and 10 kilometers from Strand. The town is overlooked by the Helderberg (meaning "clear mountain"), a part of the Hottentots-Holland range of mountains. The Old Lourens River Bridge is a provincial heritage site.

Somerset West is special in that it has the mountains, the sea, the vineyards the climate and the country feeling. Whilst it has grown substantially over the past 10 years, its beauty remains unchanged. Helderberg Hospital is a district hospital situated in the Somerset West Area. Somerset West is a very large town with a sprawling mall and other shopping centers. A variety of places of worship abound throughout the town.

19.2 Helderberg Hospital Helderberg Hospital is a district hospital with a 162-bed capacity. District hospitals serve a defined population within a health district and support primary health care; with district hospital package of care on a 24-hour basis. They have family physicians or general practitioners and clinical nurse practitioners providing health services; it includes in-patient and ambulatory health services as well as emergency health services. District hospitals provide: - Services of a family physician – not available at all district hospitals - Specialist outreach clinics – this varies from weekly visits to monthly visits depending on the speciality and the logistics involved. - The clinics are run by specialists visiting from regional hospitals and supported by the district hospital

Most district hospitals have specialist clinics in the following domains: - Internal Medicine - Orthopaedic surgery - General surgery - Psychiatry - Obstetrics and Gynaecology - Paediatrics Take note: some hospitals also have ENT clinics

19.5 Information & Communications Technology (ICT) There are laptops and routers available from the SUNLOC office. Each item issued will require a R100 refundable deposit. Damaged, lost or late return of items will result in the forfeiture of the refundable deposit. There is Wi-Fi available for students at the Helderberg Student Learning Centre. HELDERBERG STUDENT LEARNING CENTER - 3 desktop computers for use by all students - Printer available for student use – please provide own paper RULES: - No prestik on walls - All lights to be switched off when you leave - Lock all doors and close all doors upon departure - No smoking, eating or drinking in the computer area - Keep center neat and tidy at all times - No disruptive behavior or loud music

Access Cards Hospital access cards are available, advised for students travelling with private cars as this will give you access to parking on the hospital premises. Access Cards can be collected from the SUNLOC office at R100 refundable deposit per card.

19.7 Address and driving directions Head south toward Francie Van Zijl Drive (400m). Turn right at the first cross street onto Francie Van Zijl Drive (250m) and keep left to continue on Francie Van Zijl Drive (950m). Turn left onto De La Rey Street (3.1km). Use the right lanes to turn right onto Robert Sobukwe Road (1.8km). Turn left onto Borcherds Quarry Road (3km). Use the left lane to merge onto via ramp to Somerset West (550m). Follow N2 to Broadway Boulevard in Firgrove Rural. Take the Broadway Boulevard exit from N2. (23.9km). Turn left onto Broadway Boulevard (850m) and use the right lanes to turn right onto Main Road (2.4km). Turn left onto Lourensford Road (1km), take a left onto Hospital Road and then left onto Batavia Street (59m)

19.8 Facilities HELDERBERG NURSE’S HOME All areas are for communal use. BEDROOMS: - 2 fully furnished bedrooms; own bedding to be provided - Bar fridge in room - Toaster - Kettle - Cutlery and crockery provided in room BATHROOM: - Showers for communal use - Please conserve water and electricity at all times as we are in crisis CLEANING SERVICE AND LAUNDRY: - Students are required to keep all communal areas and their bedrooms clean at all times - Communal areas will be cleaned by hospital staff once per week according to their schedule - Rooms to be kept neat and tidy at all times, no pile up of dirty tableware - Students are required to keep all communal areas and their bedrooms clean at all times - Communal areas will be cleaned by staff once per week according to their schedule

1.10 Safety & Security - Keep cars locked and keep valuables out of view - Personal valuable items are to be locked away when not in use - Close all windows and lock all doors upon exit - Emergency doors are only to be used in case of an emergency - Report any incidents or complaints immediately to Ms. Nicole Crow on 082 420 4864
