Varsity Club Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2009, Dan Mcgillis northeastern university sports Information 360 huntington ave. boston, ma 02115 NORT telephone: 617-437-2691 JACK GRINOLD FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MCGILLIS A MCHIT IN HOCKEY EAST Dan McGillis of Hawkesbury need no longer worry about being ready for Division 1 college hockey. If anything, he might be musing over the prospects of a career in the National Hockey league, so fueled by the outstanding rookie season he enjoyed as a member of the Northeastern University varsity. McGillis, a 6'3, 220 pound rocket-launching defenseman who hits like a root canal, capped his freshman season with a selection to the Hockey East Association All Rookie Team, and the team Most Outstanding Rookie Award. On the HEA Rookie squad, McGillis joined Husky teammate Mike Veisor, a goaltender, and University of Maine Hobey Baker Award winner Paul Kariya. Over the course of 35 games in the competitive HEA, McGillis, a former Hawkesbury Hawk Most Valuable Player and Best Defenseman, established himself as one of the fiercest hitters in the eight-team alignment that produced the NCAA Champion Maine Black Bears. He also emerged as an offensive force for the Huskies, topping all first-year defensemen with a 5-12-17 aggregate from the blueline. In addition, he was a force on the Husky powerplay with three powerplay tallies for second­ year head. coach Ben Smith. As a team, the Huskies suffered through an lnJury­ punctuated 10-24-1 season and finished the season with consecutive defeats to NCAA Champion Maine in Orono in the first round of the HEA playoffs. McGillis surged into the collegiate ranks with a storied career with the Hawkes; he was the league's Most Improved Player in 1990-91 and a First Team All Star selection the following two seasons. He was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1992 entry draft, a 10th round selection. .

    [Type text] Forward Starting Hockey is a very fast game with many changes of directions. A game can be won or lost in fractions of a second. Players must master the ability to stop and start in order to adjust to the flow of the game. If a player cannot start out quickly, he /she will be behind the play and will not have success racing to loose pucks. During a game, a player will be confronted with the situation of having to start from a stationary position. This situation may happen during a face off alignment, confrontation in front of the net or getting up off the ice after receiving a good body check etc. To be effective a player does not require great speed but instead great quickness. This skating ability requires a player to reach top speed in only three or four strides. Players such as Paul Kariya, Joe Sakic and Pavel Bure have a great gift of being able to perform lighting quick starts. They are in full speed within two or three strides. By developing great quickness through proper starting techniques a player can lower the amount of time needed to reach his / her top speed. Explosive starts require quick choppy type strides which are followed by powerful, rapid and long leg drives. The ability to start effectively requires three skating components: Quickness – often we hear the term “quick feet”… to rapidly turn the legs over. Power – when skating the majority of a player’s power comes from his /her thighs i.e quads . It is a force exerted by the legs and body weight against the inside edges of the skates.

The Anaheim Ducks host a Skills Competition each year and one of the categories is “The Fastest Skater.” Looking at the rink diagram above, the competitors start at the Blue Line on the left of the Centerline, then skate around the Faceoff Circle, then head toward the Faceoff Circle at the opposite end of the rink. The 25 forwards were chosen in a vote comprised of Hockey East fans and members of the league’s 25th Anniversary Committee. The team was comprised of eight players from Boston College, seven players from Boston University, four players from New Hampshire, two from Providence College and one from UMass-Lowell. Headling the list were BU’s Chris Drury and Maine’s Paul Kariya as the two unanimous selections to the team. The list also includes; Brian Boyle, Ben Eaves, David Emma, Nathan Gerbe, Brian Gionta, Craig Janney, Marty Reasoner and Kevin Stevens all from the Boston College Eagles. Boston University was also represented well on the team as Tony Amonte, John Cullen, Chris Drury, Mike Grier, Shawn McEachern, Jay Pandolfo and David Sacco were the Terriers named to the all-time forwards team. In addition to Kariya, Jim Montgomery, Scott Pellerin and Jean-Yves Roy represented the Maine Black Bears. The New Hampshire Wildcats trio of Darren Haydar, Jason Krog and Mark Mowers were also named to the team.
