E-mails: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT Wildlife and plants are major part of nature which goes to a large extent in providing means of livelihood for varying categories of people in the world. Human beings are however engaged in over exploitation of this segment of the ecosystem, so much that many species are becoming endangered. It is against this background that this study evaluates the conservation strategies of wildlife resources in Nigerian national parks with particular reference to the old Oyo National Park. Data used for the study were primary data obtained through random sampling of 60 respondents in Ikoyi-Ile, an adjoining settlement, richer in the fauna population of the park. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic and chi square statistics. The result shows considerable degree of effectiveness of the strategies employed by the authority of the park, as majority of the respondents are aware of the status of the park as a protected area. The paper therefore concludes by emphasizing the need to brace up in the various conservation programmes of the park. -

Agro forestry systems are nowadays the subject of many investigations all over the world. This is because of their potential for carbon sequestration and storage. The parklands are some ancient cultural systems with a wide distribution in West Africa. The contribution of these systems to climate change mitigation has to do with the organic carbon storage in soils and sequestration of atmospheric carbon. This study aims at presenting an overview of the current knowledge on soils organic carbon and allometric equations for estimating aboveground biomass in agro forestry land use systems in West Africa. Significant amounts of carbon, ranging from 0.29 to 32 MgC.ha-1.year-1, were sequestered according to specific argroforestry systems. Yet, allometric equations for many species are lacking as carbon stock in several soil types needs to be estimated. Indeed, further studies need to be undertaken therein. -

Dowsett Received 16 December 2014 Summary.—This paper reviews the distribution of birds in Nigeria that were not treated in detail in the most recent national avifauna (Elgood et al. 1994). It clarifies certain range limits, and recommends the addition to the Nigerian list of four species (African Piculet Verreauxia africana, White-tailed Lark Mirafra albicauda, Western Black-headed Batis Batis erlangeri and Velvet-mantled Drongo Dicrurus modestus) and the deletion (in the absence of satisfactory documentation) of six others (Olive Ibis Bostrychia olivacea, Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens, Richard’s Pipit Anthus richardi, Little Grey Flycatcher Muscicapa epulata, Ussher’s Flycatcher M. ussheri and Rufous-winged Illadopsis Illadopsis rufescens). Recent research in West Africa has demonstrated the need to clarify the distributions of several bird species in Nigeria. I have re-examined much of the literature relating to the country, analysed the (largely unpublished) collection made by Boyd Alexander there in 1904–05 (in the Natural History Museum, Tring; NHMUK), and have reviewed the data available in the light of our own field work in Ghana (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2014), Togo (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2011a) and neighbouring Benin (Dowsett & Dowsett- Lemaire 2011, Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2009, 2010, 2011b). The northern or southern localities of species with limited ranges in Nigeria were not always detailed by Elgood et al. (1994), although such information is essential for understanding distribution patterns and future changes. For many Guineo-Congolian forest species their northern limit in West Africa lies on the escarpment of the Jos Plateau, especially Nindam Forest Reserve, Kagoro. -

Journal of Tourism and Management Research 101 ISSN:2149-6528 Journal of Tourism and Management Research ISSN: 2149-6528 2016 Vol. 1, Issue.1 SUSTAINABLE WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AT OKOMU NATIONAL PARK, NIGERIA Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the various sustainable preservation measures at Okomu National Park, Benin, Nigeria, identify the various challenges of the Park and suggest the way forward. Ethnography was adopted where research methods like key-informant interview, focus-group discussion, field observation, and electronic documentation were used to elicit data from the field. Relevant documentary sources were not left out either. Data gathered were analysed using descriptive and narrative analytical methods. This revealed a range of management measures that were grouped into two main categories (i.e. Educational measures and Technical measures). Major challenges like poaching and community violence were identified, with the major causes arising from host communities. At the end the study made a useful contribution to the sustainable management of parks for ecotourism development, by introducing the HoPSuP Model as a management practice to encourage a healthy host-park relationship in Nigeria and some other developing nations. Tree Species Diversity and Density Pattern in Afi River Forest Reserve, Nigeria
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VOLUME 3, ISSUE 10, OCTOBER 2014 ISSN 2277-8616 Tree Species Diversity And Density Pattern In Afi River Forest Reserve, Nigeria Aigbe H.I , Akindele S.O, Onyekwelu J, C Abstract: Afi River Forest Reserves in Cross River State, Nigeria, was assessed for tree species diversity and density pattern. Multistage (3 stage) sampling technique was adopted for data collection. 10 tertiary plots were randomly established within the secondary plots and trees randomly selected for measurement within the tertiary plots (0.20 ha). Growth data including: diameter at breast height (dbh, at 1.3m); diameters over bark at the base, middle and top; merchantable height and total height were collected on trees with dbh ≥ 10 cm in all the 10 tertiary sample plots. The results indicate that an average number of trees per hectare of 323 (68 species) were encountered in the study area. Population densities of the tree species ranged from 1 to 29 ha-1. This means, some tree species encountered translates to one stand per hectare. Pycnanthus angolensis was the most abundant with a total of 29 tree/ha. The basal area/ha in the study area was 102.77m2 and the species richness index obtained was 10.444, which indicate high species richness. The value of Shannon-Wiener Index (HI) is 3.827 which is quite high. The results show that the forest reserve is a well-stocked tropical rainforest in Nigeria. The high species diversity and the relative richness in timber species of the forest reserve does not correlate well with the abundance because the abundance of each of the species was quite low and density poor. -

Box 4370, Hilo, HI 96720, USA Received 22 March 2005; received in revised form 7 April 2006; accepted 8 April 2006 Abstract Four tree species were harvested periodically over a 13-year period from plantations in the humid lowlands of Costa Rica: Cedrela odorata, Cordia alliodora, Hyeronima alchorneoides, and Euterpe oleracea. The soil was a well-drained, volcanic alluvium, and high fertility coupled with 4 m of annual rainfall and high temperatures led to rapid growth rates; at age 13 many individual were >30 cm dbh and >30 m tall. Harvested trees were dissected into their component parts: leaves, rachises (for Cedrela and Euterpe), branches, boles, and coarse roots (i.e., >0.5 cm diameter). Roots of small trees were excavated in their entirety; those of large trees were harvested from a cylinder 1.0 m in diameter, immediately beneath the trunk. Large numbers of trees were sampled: 258–379 per species. Size classes sampled ranged from seedlings too small to have a dbh to trees of 30 cm dbh. Two separate allometric equations (one for trees having only a basal diameter and another for trees having a dbh), with diameter- squared times height as the metrics, were developed for each component of each species. Based on breaks in linear trends of ln–ln plots and deviations of predicted from actual values, we developed separate allometric equations, by component, for trees of different sizes. -

Security Threat Assessment for South West Executive Summary Political Context The merger between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and other smaller parties, has provided an opportunity for opposition parties to align and challenge the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This however will also provide the backdrop for a keenly contested election in 2015. The zoning arrangement for the presidency is also a key issue that will define the face of the 2015 elections and possible security consequences. Across the six geopolitical zones, other factors will define the elections. These include the persisting state of insecurity from the insurgency and activities of militants and vigilante groups, the high stakes of election as a result of the availability of derivation revenues, the ethnic heterogeneity that makes elite consensus more difficult to attain, as well as the difficult environmental terrain that makes policing of elections a herculean task. Preparations for the Elections The political temperature across the country is heating up in preparation for the 2015 elections. While some state governors are up for re-election, most others are serving out their second terms. The implication is that most of the states are open for grab by either of the major parties and will therefore make the electoral contest fiercer in 2015 both within the political parties and in the general election. -

The tree and stand properties emerging by inter-specific neighborhood should be considered in models for understanding and practical management. A promising approach for this is a more realistic representation of the individual tree allometry in models and management concepts, as tree allometry determines many structural and functional aspects at the tree and stand level. Therefore, this paper is focused on the crown allometry in mixed and mono-specific stands. Firstly, we review species-specific differences in the crown allometry in monospecific stands. Secondly, we show how species-specific differences and complementarities in crown allometry can emerge in mixed-species stands. Thirdly, the consequences of allometric complementarity for the canopy packing density will be analyzed. Fourthly, we trace the crown allometry from the tree level to the stand density and show the relevance for the self-thinning in mixed versus monospecific stands. Fifth, the consequence of the findings for modeling and regulating tree and stand growth will be discussed. The review deals mainly with widespread even-aged, mono-layered stands, but the main results apply for more heterogeneous stands analogously. -
