RECOGNITION IN THE WELL
Rep. Hargett was recognized in the Well.
REMARKS BY REPRESENTATIVE HARGETT
Mr. Speaker, as I begin my fourth term in the Tennessee House of Representatives and I stand in this Well, I think of my three previous terms when another Republican Leader stood before the Tennessee House of Representatives and lamented that, once again, Republicans were not given the opportunity to serve as Chairman of any of the Standing Committees of the House. I remember the former Chairman of the Calendar and Rules Committee, the memorable Pete Phillips, declaring, “He who has the gold makes the rules.” Once again, history repeats itself.
During the November 2002 House of Representative elections, Tennesseans cast 749,618 votes for Republican House candidates while they cast only 643,779 votes for Democratic House candidates. Those 749,000-plus citizens have been shut out of Committee chairmanships once again.
Friends, when I consider the numbers I just mentioned I am confident a new day is coming.
APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY SPEAKER
The Speaker announced the appointment of Representative Brenda Turner as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
