However, the narrative of feminism that has been appropriated by the US military in order to justify the war on terror is that of liberal feminism; it is a discourse of feminism that privileges a white, middle-class, Western audience. On a global scale, liberal feminism undermines the agency of women’s movements in the global south by assuming the universality – as well as the superiority – of Western human rights discourse. I argue that the voice of Zabel Yessayan should be included in the feminist women of color discourse within institutions in the United States. I develop this argument by bringing in the works of Cherríe Moraga and Gloria Anzaldúa’s anthology This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color and showing parallels in themes and lenses such as excavating traumatic histories, the importance of personal identity, and using writing as a form of resistance. Zabel Yessayan’s texts and This Bridge both comprise stories conveying the theme of residing in the “in-between,” and topics concerning womanhood, culture, identity, alienation and isolation.

Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is considered one of the earliest feminist writings containing criticisms of the French Revolution which applies only to men but not to women. A century later in Indonesia, Raden Ajeng Kartini co-authored his thoughts on the criticism of the situation of Javanese women who were not given the opportunity to attain equal education with men other than criticism of Dutch colonialism.

Doris Anderson Rough Layout hen Edmonton-based Branching Out: Canadian Magazine for WWomen (1973 to 1980) began its thirty-one-issue, seven-year history, Doris Anderson was the most prominent figure in women’s magazine publishing in Canada. Indeed, her work as a journalist, editor, novelist, and women’s rights activist made Anderson one of the most well-known faces of the Canadian women’s movement. She chaired the Canadian Advisory Coun- cil on the Status of Women from 1979 to 1981 and was the president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women from 1982 to 1984, but she is best known as the long-time editor of Chatelaine, Can- ada’s longest lived mainstream women’s magazine, which celebrated its eightieth anniversary in 2008. As Chatelaine’s editor from 1957 to 1977, she was at the forefront of the Canadian women’s movement, publishing articles and editorials on a wide range of feminist issues, including legal- izing abortion, birth control, divorce laws, violence against women, and ESC 36.2–3 (June/September 2010): 63–90 women in politics.     Feminism and the Mastery of Nature Feminism and the Mastery of Nature draws on the feminist critique of reason to argue that the master form of rationality of western culture has been systematically unable to acknowledge dependency on nature, the sphere of those it has defined as ‘inferior’ others. Because its knowledge of the world is sytematically distorted by the elite domination which has shaped it, the master rationality has developed ‘blind spots’ which may threaten our survival. The future depends increasingly on our ability to create a truly democratic and ecological culture beyond dualism. The book shows how the feminist critique of dominant forms of rationality can be extended to integrate theories of gender, race and class oppression with that of the domination of nature. Val Plumwood illuminates the relationship between women and nature, and between ecological feminism and other feminist theories.
