Lesser Sundas and Remote Moluccas
ISLANDS OF THE LESSER SUNDAS AND REMOTE MOLUCCAS 12 August – 7 October 2009 and 27 October - 7 November 2009 George Wagner [email protected] ISLANDS VISITED: Bali, Sumba, Timor, Flores, Komoto, Ambon, Tanimbars, Kais, Seram and Buru INTRODUCTION Indonesia, being a nation of islands, contains over 350 endemic species of birds. Of those, over 100 are only found in the Lesser Sundas and remote Moluccas. Having visited Indonesia in past years, I knew it to be safe and cheap for independent birders like myself. I decided to dedicate some four months to the process of birding these remote destinations. Richard Hopf, whom I have joined on other trips, also expressed interest in such a venture, at least for the Lesser Sundas. We started planning a trip for July 2009. Much of the most recent information in the birding public domain was in the form of tour trip reports, which are self- serving and don’t impart much information about specific sites or logistics. There are a few exceptions and one outstanding one is the trip report by Henk Hendriks for the Lesser Sundas (2008). It has all the information that anyone might need when planning such a trip, including maps. We followed it religiously and I would encourage others to consult it before all others. My modest contribution in the form of this trip report is to simply offer an independent approach to visiting some of the most out of the ordinary birding sites in the world. It became clear from the beginning that the best approach was simply to go and make arrangements along the way. -

Survei burung dengan menggunakan metode titik hitung dan jaring telah dilakukan di Halmahera, Maluku Utara di empat lokasi utama yaitu Wosea, Ake Jira, Tofu Blewen dan Bokit Mekot. Sebanyak 70 spesies burung dari 32 famili dijumpai selama penelitian lapangan. Keragaman burung tertinggi ditemukan di Tofu Blewen yaitu 50 spesies (Indeks Shannon = 2.64) kemudian diikuti oleh Ake Jira (48 spesies, Indeks Shannon = 2,63), Wosea (41 spesies, Indeks Shannon = 2,54) dan Boki Mekot (37 spesies, Indeks Shannon = 2,52 ). Berdasarkan Indeks Kesamaan Jaccard, komunitas burung di Wosea jauh berbeda dibandingkan lokasi lain. Gangguan habitat dan ketinggian memperlihatkan pengaruh pada keragaman burung terutama pada jenis-jenis endemik dan terancam seperti komunitas di Wosea. Beberapa jenis burung, terutama paruh bengkok seperti Kakatua Putih, menunjukkan hubungan negatif dengan ketinggian . Moluccas 15 July to 14 August 2013 Henk Hendriks INTRODUCTION It was my 7th trip to Indonesia. This time I decided to bird the remote eastern half of this country from 15 July to 14 August 2013. Actually it is not really a trip to the Moluccas only as Tanimbar is part of the Lesser Sunda subregion, while Ambon, Buru, Seram, Kai and Boano are part of the southern group of the Moluccan subregion. The itinerary I made would give us ample time to find most of the endemics/specialties of the islands of Ambon, Buru, Seram, Tanimbar, Kai islands and as an extension Boano. The first 3 weeks I was accompanied by my brother Frans, Jan Hein van Steenis and Wiel Poelmans. During these 3 weeks we birded Ambon, Buru, Seram and Tanimbar. We decided to use the services of Ceisar to organise these 3 weeks for us. Ceisar is living on Ambon and is the ground agent of several bird tour companies. After some negotiations we settled on the price and for this Ceisar and his staff organised the whole trip. This included all transportation (Car, ferry and flights), accommodation, food and assistance during the trip. On Seram and Ambon we were also accompanied by Vinno. You have to understand that both Ceisar and Vinno are not really bird guides. They know the sites and from there on you have to find the species yourselves. After these 3 weeks, Wiel Poelmans and I continued for another 9 days, independently, to the Kai islands, Ambon again and we made the trip to Boano. -

The western half of the island of New Guinea comprises the Indonesian provinces of West Papua (Papua Barat) and Papua, collectively once called West Irian or Irian Jaya; the eastern half of the main island of New Guinea comprises the country of Papua New Guinea. We will be based in West Papua for this exhilarating, small-group birding adventure. Aside from the large landmass of New Guinea, the New Guinea region includes numerous small islands (some part of Indonesia and others part of Papua New Guinea), and we will visit one of these areas: Waigeo, part of the Raja Ampat Archipelago in West Papua (also known as the Northwestern Islands). Approximately 680 bird species have been recorded from West Papua, from slightly more than 700 for the whole New Guinea region. Some 550 species are considered breeding residents, with 279 New Guinea endemics (found in Indonesia and/or Papua New Guinea) and at least an additional 42 endemics found only in West Papua. There are also over 115 Palearctic and Australian migrant species and a range of seabirds which spend some of their time in West Papua. This tour will begin in the town of Manokwari, situated on the north-eastern tip of West Papua's Bird's Head (or Vogelkop) Peninsula where we could get our tour started with the gorgeous Lesser Bird-of-paradise, this area is usually great for Blyth’s Hornbill and numerous fruit doves. -

Pursuit of the Endless Birdwave Sulawesi and Central Molukas 2020 [January through February 2020] This is a compressed account of my primarily single-person roundtrip, a long overdue return to the region. I thought it best to avoid emulating that abundance of autoscroller-tripreports out there – those which don’t indulge much in detail and the accessibility of the reader, but tend to consist of bird-lists, the occasional atmospheric anecdote and a select sprinkle of photos. Tired by these, I aim for a more extensive how-to-conduct-a-trip in the region, that doesn’t solely rely on target-birds and twitchin’. Straying off the beaten path earns its own merit whether one treks, travels or is there for the ornithology. To me it seems that it’s the location-finding-aspect that is key to timely navigate this archipelago’s vast and biodiverse opportunities. There’s this tendency for birding destinations to be jammed in tightly between on the one hand inaccessible wilderness and on the other severely human-impacted ecospheres. This calls for less of specifics on exact bird taxa, and wanting more of notes on how-you- get-there, plus a socio-cultural contextualisation that could ease the logistics of it all, and give inspiration to planning it.
