It is difficult to envisage exactly what our land was like even at the beginning of this century. It is like one big jigsaw puzzle. We have to examine the signs and evidence that are left in order to get a clearer picture of the past. This is why the history of the coast is included in this survey. The topography, climate and geology obviously have a fundamental effect upon what types of vegetation are found in a region but there are virtually no habitats left that are untouched by man's activities in the British Isles. Much of our beautiful landscape has been destroyed, particularly in this last century since the Industrial Revolution but people are at long last beginning to realise that we must make a serious effort to conserve what is left. Before conservation takes place we must know what types of habitats already exist and consider carefully how it is best to preserve them. We don't live in a time capsule; the landscape is constantly changing. We must make sure that any industrialization or urbanization of an area or any other of man's activities don't cause the massive loss of habitats that occured at the beginning of this century when little thought or consideration was given to how these schemes might fit in with the local environment. This study is an attempt to show what type of flora is to be found on the Cleveland coast from South Gare to Cowbar. It is a series of lists of plants and descriptions of their habitats which, I trust, will form a reference document not only for botanists but also for the many groups who are responsible for the preservation of this coast. The lists in themselves have a limited value but they may give some indication of where some of the more sensitive areas of our flora are to be found. We hope that more detailed ecological studies of these habitats will be carried out in the future. The botanical records have been collected over a number of years but most of them have been collected during the last five years. An attempt has been made to collect as many of the old records for the coast as possible. In the old floras and plant lists studied the common plants are usually given no specific sites other than using such headings as abundant, common, hedgerows, fields, moors , woods etc. and so could not be included in our present lists. The ones chosen are where a specific site is listed, eg Coatham Marsh or where a plant has been shown by our surveys to be normally associated with the coast. The present records have mainly come from members of the Cleveland Naturalists' Field Club. This club was established in 1881 and is still flourishing. A few years ago it was decided to form a section of it, a Recorders' Group, and to produce a set of Proceedings. The club ceased the production of these in the early 1930's. It was felt that with all the interest locally in conservation of our environment we could contribute to this by studying some of the local areas. The study of the Cleveland coast has been done by members of the Recorders' Group with an interest in botany either as individual members or working in a group. A number of field-club outings were arranged for the club and information collected on these occasions. Cleveland County Council and Cleveland Borough Council arrange a number of natural history walks in the county; some of these are led by club members and as many of these have 1 been to the coast, valuable information has been collected on these walks. Other societies have visited the area, in particular the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union who have given us their help and advice. It must be stressed that although most of the coast is accessible to the public, some areas are privately owned. South Gare is owned by the Corus Corporation and access is only open to people who work there or who are concerned with other activities in the area. Unlike most of the coast, Corus own the beach right down to the low water mark. Elsewhere the land is owned by the Crown Estate. This means that Corus can refuse access to the foreshore at South Gare, whereas the Crown Estate normally allow access right down to the low water mark. Corus does allow various organisaticns such as the R.S.P.B., the Teesmouth Bird Club and various other clubs to carry out natural history walks and there are others arranged by Cleveland County Council, Cleveland Borough Council wardens and the Tees River wardens. These groups should be approached if anyone is interested in seeing the area. It is possible to walk along the coast from Redcar to Cowbar. There is a cliff path from Saltburn and in places it is possible to walk along the beach here under the cliffs. The cliff path circles inland around two alum mines at Boulby. These mines can be very dangerous owing to falling rocks and there is no access to the general public. The coastal path runs very close to the cliffs in some places, particularly beyond Saltburn; it can be dangerous. Particular care should be taken if children go along this part of the coast. The tides along the coast can be hazardous; always consult a tide table before you set out. If walking below the cliffs watch out for falling rocks. Sea

    Beacons of the Coast

    National Seashore National Park Service Cape Lookout U.S. Department of the Inerior Beacons of the Coast Over a century ago, mariners travelling along the Atlantic coast encountered dangerous shoals and treacherous storms. Their guides were the beacons of light produced by lighthouses which helped mariners navigate the perilous coastline. For mariners traveling along the North Carolina coast, seven lighthouse beacons were constructed to guide them through an area known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Hundreds of shipwrecks occurred due to the dangers of this area. Today, the ships traveling the coast use modern tools such as radar and sonar. The beacons continue to operate, standing as a reminder of the hardships encountered by our ancestors to help settle the country. These seven lighthouses found on the North Carolina coast stand as pieces of our past. CURRITUCK BEACH LIGHTHOUSE This lighthouse was constructed from 1874 - 1875, and it lit the last dark spot on the Carolina coast between the Cape Fear lighthouse in Virginia and Bodie Island. The red brick lighthouse rises 158 feet above sea level. Unlike many other lighthouses that received distinctive day marks, Currituck was not painted. But its red brick is unique on the Carolina coast. It has a short light signal: 5 seconds on, 15 seconds off. There is a Fresnel lens still working in the lighthouse and it is activated from dusk to dawn. Currituck Lighthouse is open 10-6 daily from Easter to Thanksgiving weekend. You can walk to the top of the lighthouse. BODIE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE This was the third lighthouse to be built on Bodie Island (pronounced “body”) and was constructed in the early 1870’s.

I moved here when my husband decided to come back home. My husband was born and lived all his chilhood in Dormanstown. Dormanstown was built for the workers of the steel industry. Also building some of the countries first retirement homes. It makes no sense to me as a resident why the steel work site is been removed from dormanstown. Whilst removing the industry from what is already a deprived and poor ward why would you want to do this as it will only make the ward poorer and less funds available when the industry goes so does any section 106 money which can only help and support the ward. id like to see the ward back with its heritage in tact and 3 ward councillors as i believe our ward is best represented with 3 rather than 2 which will make things harder for me as they will have a bigger work load and less support. Also as a member of friends of westfield farm we have used funding from the councillors on a number of occasions in order for us to put on events for the community. Our biggest been last year when we opened up the 100yrs celebrations and are continuing with this. this year. i am sure if i had the time to write a petition there would be a high percentage of the residents sign it. Birtle (NNU) EDITORIAL It is perhaps fitting that, as the Cleveland Naturalist's Field Club enters its 111th year in 1991, we should be celebrating its long history of natural history recording through the re-establishment of the "Proceedings". In the early days of the club this publication formed the focus of information desemmination and was published continuously from 1881 until 1932. Despite the enormous changes in land use which have occurred in the last 60 years, and indeed the change in geographical area brought about by the fairly recent formation of Cleveland County, many of the old records published in the Proceedings still hold true and even those species which have disappeared or contracted in range are of value in providing useful base line data for modern day surveys.

    Tees Valley Joint Minerals and Waste Development Plan Documents In association with Core Strategy DPD Adopted September 2011 27333-r22.indd 1 08/11/2010 14:55:36 i ii Foreword The Tees Valley Minerals and Waste Development Plan Documents (DPDs) - prepared jointly by the boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees - bring together the planning issues which arise from these two subjects within the sub-region. Two DPDs have been prepared. This Minerals and Waste Core Strategy contains the long-term spatial vision and the strategic policies needed to achieve the key objectives for minerals and waste developments in the Tees Valley. The separate Policies and Sites DPD, which conforms with it, identifies specific sites for minerals and waste development and sets out policies which will be used to assess minerals and waste planning applications. The DPDs form part of the local development framework and development plan for each Borough. They cover all of the five Boroughs except for the part within Redcar and Cleveland that lies within the North York Moors National Park. (Minerals and waste policies for that area are included in the national park’s own local development framework.) The DPDs were prepared during a lengthy process of consultation. This allowed anyone with an interest in minerals and waste in the Tees Valley the opportunity to be involved. An Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State carried out an Examination into the DPDs in early 2011. He concluded that they had been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 and were sound.

BACKGROUND What are Local Sites and why do we need them? 1.1 Local Sites can be Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) or Local Geological Sites (LGS). Local Wildlife Sites are areas of land which meet specific, objective criteria for nature conservation value. These criteria, which are based on the Defra guidance(1), have been decided locally by the Tees Valley Local Sites Partnership. The sites represent a range of important habitat types and variety of species that are of conservation concern. The Tees Valley RIGS (Regionally Important Geological Sites) group advises the Local Sites Partnership on the selection and management of Local Geological Sites, areas which they have identified as being of geological importance. 1.2 Local Sites can provide local contact with nature and opportunities for education, however designation as a Local Site does not confer any right of access. 1.3 Formerly known as Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCIs) and RIGS, Local Sites are non-statutory site designations that have a lower level of protection than statutory designations, such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Local Sites, excluding those within the North York Moors National Park, currently receive protection from certain types of inappropriate development through our Local Development Framework.
