BLACKBURN B.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST M.A., UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Erica Scharrer Military themed games have been broadly critiqued as ideological vehicles that support western military institutions and militaristic attitudes. At the heart of these critiques is a concern for the potential influence these games may have on their audience, yet little empirical evidence exists to either support or refute that concern. Using cultivation theory as a general framework, this study investigates whether associations between playing military themed video games and military-related thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes can be found in an online, national survey of 410 young adult men. Consistent with cultivation theory’s predictions, significant associations between the use of military themed video games and second-order cultivation effects were found, including militaristic attitudes, Islamophobia, and the perceived likelihood of a terrorist attack. Moreover, military themed games were a stronger predictor of such effects than general measures of gameplay, which predicted a participant’s propensity to enlist in the military. However, this study failed to find evidence of first-order effects, nor did it find that trait v transportability or the perceived realism of military games were meaningful moderators of second-order effects, as predicted by cognitive models of cultivation theory. These results highlight the potential problematic relationship between military games and their players, but cast some concerns as to the fitness of cultivation theory as the ideal framework to fully explore this relationship.     Peter Kraska and Steven Chapman Militarization and Contemporary Video Gaming This project examines the influence of militarism, and the involvement of the U.S. military itself, in contemporary video gaming. The military’s involvement includes developing its own, free of charge, video game title used as a recruitment tool, employing a host of training games many of which are used to desensitize new soldiers to the war environment and the act of killing, and participating in numerous consulting and marketing activities associated with the most popular war-oriented games for mass consumption. Surrounding this direct involvement by the military is a massive and increasingly lucrative gaming industry that markets war and killing in a “realistic” yet intensely glorified manner. Aside from documenting and describing in detail this phenomenon, we examine the macro-cultural and societal implications of this phenomenon. Figure 1.1 – One Day Sales -- 2011 Context and Concepts For three years in a row, the number one selling entertainment product during its release period has been a video-game – surpassing even block-buster movies such as Harry Potter and Star Wars. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 recently made $775 million in its first five days in stores, and the Modern Warfare franchise has grossed more than $6 billion. Its central and apparently successful marketing slogan is: “There’s a soldier in all of us” (Snider, 2011). Of course what’s noteworthy to criminologists, is the type of game: extremely violent, highly realistic war environment, and one that glorifies killing and warfare. It takes only a superficial critical analysis to recognize that this game genre has tapped into an enduring and deep-rooted aspect of American culture – militarism; defined as an ideology that sees the use of militaristic force, or threat of force, as a desired means to solve problems, gain political power, or administer retributive justice.

    INTRODUCTION Xenonauts took exactly five years to develop. It took ten times as long and cost twenty times as much as expected, but has been such a big part of my life that I am somewhat sad that the journey has come to an end. There was a lot of personal risk involved. When development started in 2009, I was twenty-two and had no knowledge / experience of game development. I sunk all of my own savings into getting the project moving, most of which was inheritance money. My office was my bedroom; I worked on Xenonauts in the evenings and at weekends around a full-time consultancy job with KPMG that included three years of accountancy exams (failing any would have left me unemployed). Thankfully, everything turned out well. This article is the “development diary” promised on Kickstarter, an appraisal of the aspects of development that I felt went well and those I felt went badly. I hope it is of interest – perhaps it will prevent someone else making the same mistakes! WHAT WENT RIGHT #1: REMOTE TEAM The team on Xenonauts consisted almost entirely of remote freelancers – perhaps two hundred of whom were involved in production of the game across the entire period. Despite having built a close relationship with many of them, I’ve met perhaps five in person. Our production model was simple: I managed every team member directly via email. The team had almost no contact with one another – the two big exceptions being the coding team and my colleague Aaron, who joined me full-time when we set up an office after our successful Kickstarter (roughly three years into development).

Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games.
