July Monday 12th – First day of Term 3 The attendance rate for our school last term was 91.2%. While this is an improvement from last year, we are hoping to reach the goal of 95%. Research tells us that attending school every day possible is extremely important to ensure consistent learning occurs. Each week we award one student for their attendance at school. All students who attend school each day for the week, with no late arrivals or early departures go into the draw for a $10 Scholastic book voucher. These vouchers are kindly donated by our P&C and we thank them for their continued commitment to supporting our students to achieve the best they possibly can. Congratulations to Declan Williamson and Charisma Kirkup who were our Super Attendees for the last fortnight. This week our class had the wonderful opportunity of going on an excursion and joining other schools in our area to celebrate the ‘Gin Gin Community Early Years Day’. It was a day of fun with many hands on and exciting activities to participate in- painting, slime, obstacle course, collage. We even had the opportunity to see the fire truck and ambulance. We concluded our day by watching a Camp Quality Puppet show. A great day out with many tired little people on the bus trip back to school. Every day counts. Our class is now moving on to creating a television-style advertisement for art which persuades a targeted audience to protect an imaginary place. Meanwhile in Technology students will be repurposing an item of clothing to create another useful item. Last week we finally had a warm enough day to complete our Science assessment which revolved around changing matter. Students really enjoyed this assessment as they compared how chocolate and ice melt (Please see photos below). Reading: All students will be tested for improvement in their reading levels within the last couple of weeks of school. Every bit of reading done both at school and home is a benefit to the student reading. Children who read often and widely get better at it. After all, practice makes perfect in almost everything humans do, and reading in no different. Also don’t forget if you want a meeting with me in regards to your child’s progress this year please phone or text me on 0437343811.Reading Students are working on creating a Newspaper Article for English which persuades the reader to either support a colony of flying foxes in a fictitious town or to demand that they be removed. Student need to use evidence to support their argument including supplied quotes, maps, photographs and researched information. We are also busy with our photography as the students work on the creation of a Stop Motion Video using light and shadow to create mood. There are some very creative ideas emerging and we cannot wait to see the finished results. Last week our students enjoyed their workshop with the Taiko Drums and learnt the importance of working together as a team to produce the desired sound. As is mentioned in this newsletter, I will be taking some Long Service Leave at the end of this term. Mrs Manderson will be Acting Principal and 5/6 teacher in my absence. This will ensure continuity for the students in our class. We have been smashing it with our behaviour and were rewarded with winning Winston for the past 2 weeks in a row!! Well done 5/6!! During this morning, we welcomed our neighbouring small schools to Wallaville - with Mt Perry, Maroondan, Bullyard and McIlwraith coming to participate in one-hour workshops learning the art of the Taiko. It is always great to get together with our small schools as we build friendships with students that we will be attending Year 6 camp with, and also transitioning to High School later in the year. Biggest Morning Tea A big congratulations to Leesa Wentworth on the organisation of the Biggest Morning Tea at Wallaville on Friday 28th May. It has been many years since our school has hosted this event. Some may remember the Year 6/7 class organising a number of these before Year 7 moved to High School. It was nice to have the event back on our grounds. Congratulations to all students who decorated a cake for the morning. Collectively, students raised $319 towards supporting those with Cancer. Students should be very proud of themselves for making the effort to support such a worthy cause. There’s a continuum, with positive mental health at one end, emerging mental health issues in the middle and more serious mental health conditions at the other end. Depending on the circumstances, an individual can move back and forth along this continuum. This movement is influenced by a complex interplay of social, psychological, biological and cultural elements in a person’s life. Risk and protective factors Understanding common risk and protective factors of mental health issues helps individuals, families and communities to identify key focus areas to help reduce the impact of, and even possibly prevent, mental health issues. The presence of one or more risk factors doesn’t mean a child or young person will develop a mental health condition. But as the number of risk factors increases, generally so does the likelihood.
