REDISCOVERING OLD FINDINGS OF THE 19th CENTURY: ‘METTENIUS’ OR ‘LICOPOLI’ ORGANS? Marius Nicușor GRIGORE1*, Constantin TOMA1 Abstract: Salt (chalk) glands of Plumbaginaceae represent interesting structures involved in the excretion of calcium carbonate outside plants’ organs, especially on leaves surfaces. These chalk-glands, nominated by some authors as ‘Licopoli’ or ‘Mettenius’ organs are also very important from taxonomical point of view. Their structure has been a matter of debate for decades and a historical analysis reveals that there are still some inconsistencies regarding the contributions of earlier botanists in discovering and describing chalk-glands. The present work tries to provide a picture of historical progress recorded in the 19th century related to investigation of these structures, focusing especially on the two important names usually mentioned in relation to them: Mettenius and Licopoli. In this respect, several useful clarifications are made, with emphasis on the role played by the two botanists in the stimulation of research interest for these glands among the generations of botanists to come. Introduction Plumbaginaceae constitute a well-represented cosmopolitan family in the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere and showing preferences for arid or saline, often coastal, environments [KUBITZKI, 1993]. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification of flowering plants [APG, 2003] included this family in the Caryophyllales order, together with other families adapted to extreme environments including oligotrophic soils, arid zones, and soils with high salt content. ® The European Journal of Plant Science and Biotechnology ©2011 Global Science Books The Use of Halophytes for Mediterranean Landscaping Carla Cassaniti* • Daniela Romano Department of Agriculture and Food Science, University of Catania, Via Valdisavoia 5, 95123, Catania, Italy Corresponding author : * [email protected] ABSTRACT A study was carried out to identify some halophytes that naturally grow in the Mediterranean area, which could be utilized for ornamental purposes. The current investigation, based also on previous literature, showed about 172 suitable species in 30 families and 86 botanical genera. The Chenopodiaceae was found to be the largest family with 34 species. Within the genera, the most represented were Limonium and Atriplex (17 and 14 species, respectively). The most common life form was the herbaceous perennial (49%), the hydrohalophyte the most widespread habitat (about 40%). The characteristic lack of showy flowers in most of these halophytes, suggests the opportunity of using them to provide green areas with aesthetic features. The tolerance to saline environments allows these plants to be used in landscape restoration. Prostrate species such as Carpobrotus edulis, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum and M. nodiflorum seem to be of particular value not only for the spectacular blooming but also for their utilization such as groundcover. An Ecological Database of the British Flora
An Ecological Database of the British Flora submitted by Helen Jacqueline Peat for examination for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biology University of York October 1992 Abstract The design and compilation of a database containing ecological information on the British Flora is described. All native and naturalised species of the Gymnospermae and Angiospermae are included. Data on c.130 characteristics concerning habitat, distribution, morphology, physiology, life history and associated organisms, were collected by both literature searching and correspondence with plant ecologists. The evolutionary history of 25 of the characteristics was investigated by looking at the amount of variance at each taxonomic level. The variation in pollination mechanisms was found at high taxonomic levels suggesting these evolved, and became fixed, early on in the evolution of flowering plants. Chromosome number, annualness, dichogamy and self-fertilization showed most variance at low taxonomic levels, suggesting these characteristics have evolved more recently and may still be subject to change. Most of the characteristics, however, eg. presence of compound leaves, height and propagule length showed variance spread over several taxonomic levels suggesting evolution has occurred at different times in different lineages. The necessity of accounting for phylogeny when conducting comparative analyses is discussed, and two methods allowing this are outlined. Using these, the questions: 'Why does stomatal distribution differ between species?' and 'Why do different species have different degrees of mycorrhizal infection?' were investigated. Amphistomaty was found to be associated with species of unshaded habitats, those with small leaves and those with hairy leaves, and hypostomaty with woody species, larger leaves and glabrous leaves. -
