The sixth form has continued to hold regular debates with the boys’ school, alternating venues to tackle questions connected with film re-workings of texts, Trident renewal, and the significance of marriage, among others. Our teams have invariably produced well organised, detailed and persuasive speeches, and delivered them with aplomb in front of large audiences. The rest of the sixth form is to be congratulated on its support; on one occasion seventy students made the journey up the hill at Friday lunchtime. Speeches from the floor are becoming longer and more independent of question format, which is to be applauded. We are very grateful to Mr Bonds and BS for their enthusiastic commitment to this lively joint enterprise, which we much value. From the speaker group Alex White and Niamh Libonatti- Roche were selected to represent us at the local round of the ESU Schools’ Mace competition and performed with assurance and fluency against strong opposition. Year 8 Public Speaking This half term year 8 girls have been polishing their public speaking skills. Everyone has selected a subject about which she feels strongly and has prepared a short speech to persuade her classmates to agree with her views. The quality has been particularly high this year and topics have ranged from animal rights to the use of capital punishment (for and against) to gender stereotyping to talking in cinemas and beauty pageants… On 17th December two winners from each class will represent their house in the final. From these finalists, a group will go forward to represent the school at a regional competition. Watch this space! Mrs Burdett

As girls perhaps may receive new phones, I pads, etc for Christmas, may I remind parents of the importance of ensuring effective security and parental controls are in place to protect the girls and their friends from unsuitable and upsetting material. The Knitting Club have had a busy term learning to knit various stitches, work with colours and follow basic patterns, just in time to knit festive Christmas tree decorations (Snowmen, Santas, Christmas trees, Gingerbread men, etc)! Some girls are completing this as an activity for their Duke of Edinburgh award, some are completing their Snowdrop awards. The Clothes Show Live @ the NEC

On 8th December, a large group of GCSE and A Level Textiles students travelled to Birmingham to attend The Clothes Show at the National Exhibition Centre. The exhibition space was 186,000sqm (making it the largest in the UK) and contained hundreds of well- known and independent brand stalls offering a range of products. For example, makeup by Barry M, Rimmel London and Models Own, and hair care brands like THX, Peaches and Cream, and clothes stores such as ‘Religion’, ‘In The Style’ and ‘Motel Rocks’. The main purpose of the visit was the fashion show, which was insightful and inspiring. The dancers and models were fantastic and stunning and they interacted with the audience well. There was a performance by X Factor contestant Josh Daniels, who sang a lovely rendition of “Runnin’” by Naughty Boy and Beyoncé. The fashion show was also hosted by ‘Made in Chelsea’ star, Jamie Laing. Overall, the experience was thrilling and eye-opening. Seeing the possible career opportunities has confirmed our love for the subject. Year 7 Trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace and Portchester Castle 20th October 2015 All of Year 7 enjoyed stepping back in time to enjoy the delights of a real Medieval Castle, climbing the keep and see how the castle had changed from a Roman fort to a prison during the Napoleonic Wars. The best part was the winding spiral staircase which was not for those who didn't like heights! Fishbourne Palace contained a marvellous collection of Roman mosaics and artefacts. It was amazing to think that the Romans had actually lived there. We enjoyed the mosaics and the Roman gardens, and used our mathematic skills to complete work provided by the Maths department. Girls also took part in a Roman fashion workshop and very much enjoyed seeing their friends dressed as rich and poor Romans!

Year 12 Politics Participation in Parliament Week at Bournemouth Town Hall

On Friday 20th November five Year 12 politics students (Phoebe Ashling, Katie Arnold, Christine Lahham, Ellie Mackin and Melissa Nock) had the opportunity to take part in Democracy in Action 2015, as a part of Parliament Week which is a programme of events and activities that connects people with Parliament and democracy in the UK. Sixty-six senior school students from a variety of schools in the Bournemouth area met at the Town Hall and took part in two debates with the support and participation of local and national politicians. We debated the local budget in a hypothetical area and whether council tax there should rise, along with which services should be cut if the budget does not increase. For this debate we were divided into groups with each group being advised by a politician, I was lucky enough to be in a group with Lord Whitty, a Labour peer who has been a member of the Lords for more than 19 years and I feel that his experience in politics really helped my group develop and expand our argument. The second issue that was debated was the current Syrian Refugee Crisis and whether the UK Government should be doing more to help these people, the debate itself was lively to say the least with a lot of people getting passionate behind their cause, having the opportunity to debate with fellow students and politicians on the same footing was a great experience as I feel it helped me gain more of an insight into how debate in the Houses of Parliament is carried out. After tea and cake and a more informal chat with some of the politicians it was time to leave, but we all just want to thank Mr McDonald for letting us have the opportunity to participate in such an interesting afternoon.

Talk to Year 9 by Holocaust Survivor Walter Kammerling 17th November 2015 It was really interesting to listen to Walter talk about his life and what happened to him and his family, and it made it even more interesting as it was a first-hand experience he was sharing with us. I also found it really amazing how he was sharing such an eventful, sad story with lots of people from lots of schools around the UK. It still must be hard for him and I really appreciate him talking about it so we would be more aware. It was also very nice of him to answer any questions we had, no matter how personal, in case we were unsure of anything. I think by having that talk from Walter, everyone that listened knows and understands a lot more about the Holocaust, and definitely will have walked away with more knowledge. I really enjoyed having the Holocaust talk from Walter, and it’s a shame that future generations won’t get this experience to listen to the amazing stories of the survivors. Martha Robinson (9S)

This was greatly noticed in the Kurt Jackson exhibition as his use of mixed media and emphatic marks are lost through the screen. Jackson’s work was, in my opinion, the most intriguing art out of all the artwork we saw; I fell in love with his piece ‘A few choughs fly over, the sea comes in’ (2013). Year 10 visit to Tate Britain & the National Portrait Gallery

On the 29th of September, year 10 Art GCSE students went on a day trip to London to visit two galleries - Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery. The aim of the visit was to gather inspiration for our upcoming project. The themes we were focussing on were: Machine, Heads, War and Conflict, Enclosed & Crowded. We found many pieces from famous artists such as Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. After selecting various works relating to those topics, we made detailed copies and notes in our sketchbooks, which were used later in our coursework.

Overall, the trip was very enjoyable for all the students and it helped us to expand our knowledge and come up with new ideas. Year 10 admiring a large group portrait at the National Portrait Gallery

Year 13 and some Year 11 students were given Year 13 and some year 11 students were given the exciting opportunity to have a painting workshop given by John Duffin, a professional artist and lecturer at Central St. Martin’s college of Art. He showed us how to use different techniques with acrylic paint on canvas, so we could ultimately produce a piece of work for our coursework. By giving us group discussions, one-on-one advice and a tutorial at the beginning, John helped immensely in teaching us practices that we will definitely go on to use in future paintings. At the end of the workshop, John looked at all of our paintings individually and told us what was successful and what needed to be improved. It was a great experience and was so beneficial to us! We would love to have more workshops like this in the future. John Duffin helps Laura with the highlights in her painting By Laura Coombs 13.2 Performing Arts Department—Music .

It’s been a busy second half of term in the Music Department. The Autumn Concert took place on Thursday 19th November, with all school ensembles having the opportunity to perform music they’ve been working on this term, together with solos from A Level Music students.

The Festival Choir and the BSG Community Choir took part in the annual BSMA Carol Festival at the Pavilion Theatre on 24 November. The conductor for the evening was Lin Marsh, a former BSG pupil. Both groups excelled in their solo items. The Festival Choir performed ‘Come To Bethlehem’ by Peter Warlock and the Community Choir gave the first performance of ‘The Night Is Still With Expectation’ composed by Tim Watts, a member of the choir. Congratulations must go to Natalie Pursglove and Rhianydd Davies who, following their performance of their prize-winning carol ‘Song for a King’, were presented with the JP Morgan Trophy. Verity Joy and Josephine Grantham read the poem ‘Christmas Eve’ . A special mention must also go to Shania Sells who led the team of stewards for the two evenings of the festival.

During the term, composer Mark Bowden, along with members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, has been working with A Level Music students from BSG and BS on composition techniques. These have been very valuable sessions which have proved a great inspiration to the students. They will return in March to record students’ compositions.

The Chamber Choir has begun a project also linking with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to perform, with other choirs, the ‘Little Mass’ by Sir James MacMillan at the Lighthouse and at Colston Hall in Bristol in February as part of the BSO’s concert season. For parents of members of the Chamber Choir, further dates follow later in this article. It promises to be a most exciting series of concerts and a wonderful opportunity for the students to be performing with conductor Kirill Karabits and the BSO.

The BSG Community Choir formed at the beginning of term has been growing week by week and has already taken part in the Autumn Concert, the BSMA Carol Festival and the BSG Carol Concert. New members are always welcome. The only requirement is a love of singing. Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings 7.30pm – 9.00pm in M2 in the Performing Arts Centre. For further details contact Mrs O’Connell.

More recently, Mrs O’Connell took some students to perform at Northbourne Connect, a Day Care Home for Dementia sufferers. The students provided a lovely afternoon’s carol-singing for the residents.

Finally, the Christmas Carol Concert took place on Thursday 10th December. There was, as ever, a mixture of Christmas music and readings which the audience seemed to enjoy hugely. We are very grateful to St Francis’s Church for allowing us to hold this event in the church.

Performing Arts Department—Drama

Nov 25-27, 2015

In November I was proud to direct a talented and committed cast and crew in a production of Daisy Pulls it Off. The tiered seating was used for the first time in Studio D1, turning an already impressive performance space into a theatre. The girls played to sold-out houses over three nights and worked extremely hard to achieve some very comic and polished performanc- es. They worked as a true ensemble and were a credit to the school. Performing Arts Department—Drama .

II thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a fun-filled journey which all the cast worked very hard to learn lines and devel- op our characters. My character was espe- cially fun because of her witty one-liners and humorous physical movements. The rehearsal process was intense and some- times challenging but this only pushed the cast harder to achieve a masterful result. This professional-feel experience is some- thing which I will remember for a long time and I would definitely like to encourage others to get involved in our future school productions – I know I will! Zara Cockrem 11F (Trixie)

Daisy Pulls It Off, 2015 – the cast and crew

I enjoyed it because I felt we had more of a connection with the audience rather than performing on the stage in the hall. It boosted my confidence and I made friends with other people in my year. This is going to stay with me because it was so spe- cial. I don’t know how anybody could forget it! Chloe Bland 8R (ensemble)

The BSG production in November included girls from year 8-13. I was in the ensemble and I really enjoyed being involved. Not only was it great fun but I feel that it helped my drama skills and really got me into other extra-curricular activities. Doing this play also made me make new friends that I wouldn’t have talked to otherwise. “Daisy Pulls it Off” inspired me to be more like the older pupils and develop my acting so that in the future I might get a bigger role and eventually achieve my ambition of being on the stage. Another thing I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. Everyone was so friendly and if you had a problem you could just ask and they wouldn’t mind. If you went wrong they wouldn’t judge you, just correct you and that would be the end of it. Daisy Pulls it Off was a fantastic opportunity for me and I hope it inspires you to get more involved in plays and other events at school.

Darcey Lightfoot 8C (ensemble) Recently we took part in a great experience when we were in the play “Daisy Pulls It Off.” We played the characters Monica and Sybil who could definitely be described as “mean, silly little rotters!” We rehearsed for weeks which definitely payed off as the play was “absolutely topping.” We were definitely nervous, but we tried not to let it show. Despite illnesses, we managed to Pull It Off for all 3 nights with only a few coughs along the way! Everybody in the show immersed themselves in their characters, with the help and much appreciated involvement of staff, students and crew. None of this would have been possible without the help and involvement of Miss Webb and Mrs de Cuervo - the enigmatic drama teachers of BSG. We are sad that it’s all over, but it’s an experience we will never forget! Freya Wadeley 11R and India de Lancy Green 11R (Sybil and Monica)

U19 County Netball Finals

The County Competition is always highly competitive and further drama was added to the occasion when our fantastic GD Petrina Paramore fell awkwardly in the first few minutes of the first match. The outcome of which was a fractured ankle, and a very sad Petrina! However, undeterred by this the squad set about the task of winning their section and gaining a semi-final place. This included impressive victories over Canford, Sherborne, Poole High and Woodroffe. The squad really showed great team spirit and excellent controlled play when the conditions deteriorated with the very cold temperature and rain. . The squad rose to the challenge and finished top of their section which earned them a semi-final game against . This was a real nail biting experience as the game went goal for goal and it was not until the final few minutes where BSG pulled ahead by two goals and won the match. The final against Canford was again very close and it was great to have a psychological advantage, having beaten them earlier in the group qualification. With some great defending by all players and shooting accuracy from Lucinda Leaton and Phoebe Harris, BSG won the final by two goals (10-8.) Congratulations to the whole squad, you should be very proud as the new U19 County Champions! The team will now go on to play in the South West Regional Finals in January, in Cornwall.

They were up against the top swimming schools in the Country, Millfield, Mount Kelly and Plymouth, who swept the board with the trophies. Despite such prestigious opposition, both BSG teams achieved times faster than their qualifying times with the Inter team finishing 28th in the country and the Senior team finishing 18th. A highly commendable achievement. Well done!
