NOSTRA Network Of STRAits INITIATIVES DEVELOPED BY DDBR AAUTHORITYUTHORITY AND DDNI FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN DANUBE DELTA BIOSPHERE RESERVE LECCE, 11.04.2013 DANUBE DELTA BIOSPHERE RESERVE AUTHORITY It’s a public institution, established to administrate the natural heritage of national interest ofofofthe Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve It’s subordinated to the Romanian Ministry of Environment and led by a Governor It coordinates the management of the Biosphere Reserve area through three main objectives: Conservation and protection of the existing natural heritage Encouragement of sustainable use of the natural resources Provision of support, based on the results of research, for management, education, training and services DANUBE DELTA NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IIIt’It’t’t’ss a subunit of the RRR&D R&D National Institute for Environment Protection It’s coordinated by the Ministry of Environment It’s carrying out basic and applied researches in support of the management of the DDBR and other wetlands of national or international importance Main research directions: biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, sustainable use of natural resources, rehabilitation of some threatened species populations, ecological restoration, GIS development DANUBE DELTA - A BIOSPHERE RESERVE In September 1990 Danube Delta became a BIOSPHERE RESERVE The new protection status of the Danube Delta imposed a specific organization of the economic activities in DDBR According to UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve’s zonation, the economic activities were allowed just in the buffer zones (traditional economic activities) and the economic areas (large scale economic activities) Starting with 1991, DDBRA and DDNI jointly worked together for organizing, facilitating and controling the tourist activities in DDBR DANUBE DELTA BIOSPHERE RESERVE --AA TOURIST DESTINATION -- TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ––NATURALNATURAL VALUES LandscapeLandscape:: over 400 lakeslakes,, channelschannels,, sand dunesdunes,, specific forestsforests,, beaches 30 types of ecosystems TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ––NATURALNATURAL VALUES Great biodiversity: over 6000 species of plants and animals (2382 species of plants, 4029 species of animals) The third place in the world as scientific importance after the Great Coral Barrier (Australia) and the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador ) Over 300 bird species TOURIST ATTRACTIONS –––NATURAL VALUES Great natural resources: fish, reed, medicinal plants, game (hunting), landscape TOURIST ATTRACTIONS –––CULTURAL HERITAGE The local population: about 15.000 inhabitants in 27 villages and one town Cultural diversity: about 20 ethnies ––RomaniansRomanians (7(79%),9%), Russians 11%), Ukranians (9%), Greeks, Turks, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Germans and other nationalities (1%) TOURIST ATTRACTIONS –––CULTURAL HERITAGE Specific architecture, traditions and gastronomy Archaeological sites, historic and religious monuments TYPES OF TOURISM AND TOURIST ACTIVITIES Recreation (boat trips, leisure) Angling Birdwatching (for specialized groups) Scientific tourism (students, specialized groups of scientific interest) Rural tourism (board&lodging at local households or guest houses) Sunbathing and swimming (Sulina, Sf.
