Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping. Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures. I don't go around throwing 10's around for movie ratings, but I extremely impressed by this movie. The emotional and visual scope offered by the story, the cinematography, and the acting, gave all viewers with eyes to see and ears to hear, a wonderful treat. I'm sure not everyone loves this particular type of movie, but if you haven't been desensitized by the CGI and special The Secret Life of Bees of many of today's movies, you'll appreciate the very core of this movie, which is the human struggle - especially the depiction of the search for identity, and the need to give and received compassion from those living on this big blue The Secret Life of Bees together with us. A reminder of the racism of a not too far distant time, and the timeless theme of love, death, friendship, and compassion, add the effective seasoning that helps us all relate in some very tangible way to The Secret Life of Bees movie. Enjoy it with someone you care about, and taste the honey. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show. Visit our What to Watch page. January 29th 2020 VOL 3 ISSUE 3 By Sheena Luke On Monday, January 18th, 2021, the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) hosted a Poetry Workshop in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The purpose of the event was to empower and educate youth on Martin Luther King Jr.'s work and its relevance to today. Panelists/Co-hosts at the event included James Gnatt, Damien Tillman, Heather Butts, Brandi Daniels, Tony Rocha, Michael Blake, and Joneé Billy. Damien Tillman, co-host of the event, posed questions related to youth empowerment to the panelists. In addition to brainstorming what the youth could do to advocate for their futures, the group addressed big issues facing the nation today. One of the topics discussed during the event was the need for equal access to a proper education throughout the nation. By understanding and addressing an issue, the solution will become easier to achieve. In light of this, it is imperative to speak about significant topics with the youth. “I think having the ability to get educated, across the board no matter where you live is something that needs to be better established in the country.” - Tony Rocha, New York Football Club First Team Player. The poetry workshop took place after the panel. It was an opportunity for the youth to express themselves through their own literary work that they could share with others. I contacted panelists Heather Butts and Brandi Daniels so that they could provide more insight on the event and their hopes for future events. Brandi Daniels, NYCFC Representative Though you enjoyed helping people and giving back to the community as a kid, what truly made you want to pursue this as your career and life profession? "There comes a time where you're asked, 'What do you want to do with your life?' And, when I was a teenager, my life was soccer.

THE BLACK IMAGE IN THE WHITE MIND: EDUCATIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF MEDIA RACISM Sheldon A. Lanier A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education in the School of Education. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Kathleen Brown Dana Thompson-Dorsey Misti Williams © 2017 Sheldon A. Lanier ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Sheldon A. Lanier: The Black Image in the White Mind: Educational Consequences of Media Racism (Under the direction of Kathleen Brown) In the United States of America, Black male students often face a cultural disconnect when entering classrooms today. As a result, outcomes for these students, including academic ones, are both alarming and reprehensible. It is conceivable that a link exists between the exposure to negative racial portrayals of Black males in the media, teachers’ perceptions of their Black male students, and the negative treatments of Black males that result. These perceptions are important when examining how they can affect school policies and practices institutionally. Given the multitude of structures that help shape the negative outcomes of Black males in this country, mixed methods on both quantitative and qualitative inquiry were used to explore and examine the following questions: 1) How are Black males portrayed in the HBO original series, The Wire? 2) Do these portrayals reify (or, not) stereotypes of Black males in the United States? 3) How might these portrayals cultivate White female teachers’ perceptions and subsequent treatment of Black male students? The Wire was used as the media content sample due to the vast amount of Black male actors in lead or prominent recurring roles.

  • Adele Returns with New Song "Hello"
By LAUREN MORASKI CBS NEWS October 23, 2015, 8:31 AM Listen: Adele returns with new song "Hello" Adele is officially back: The Grammy-winning songstress is providing a sneak peek at her upcoming album. On Friday, she unveiled the video for "Hello," the first single from "25," and it does not disappoint. The powerful, chilling ballad features the lyrics: "Hello, can you hear me? / I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be / When we were younger and free / I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet." Cannes Jury Prize-winning director Xavier Dolan ("Mommy," "Tom at the Farm") is behind the new video, which was shot earlier this month in Montreal. "It was a privilege to direct the music video for Adele's beautiful, heartbreaking song" he said. "When I first heard it, all the images were already running by so clearly in my head -- and her trust and generosity allowed me to create freely." The video also features a cameo by actor Tristan Wilds ("The Wire," "The Secret Life of Bees"). "Hello" will appear on Adele's third album, due out on Nov. 20. It's her first new studio set since 2011's best-selling album, "21." "My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record," she wrote. "I'm making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did. But I haven't got time to hold on to the crumbs of my past like I used to.

  • Fireworks Are Blast for Area Friends, Families by Grant Merritt [email protected]
The News Reporter Published since 1890 every Monday and Thursday for the County of Columbus and her people. WWW.NRCOLUMBUS.COM Monday, July 4, 2016 75 CENTS TABOR CITY Fireworks are blast for area friends, families By Grant Merritt [email protected] The 29th annual Tabor City Fourth of July Fireworks celebration drew a large crowd to South Columbus High School on July 2 for a night of fun, food and fireworks. Families and friends showed their patriotism by shoot- ing fireworks and coming together as a community. “I love the event,” SCHS Stallionettes co-sponsor and science teacher Baleigh Fisher said. “I think it’s a good, safe place for families to bring their little ones because this is probably the only time they see fireworks.” Jennifer Taylor said she remembers the fireworks show taking place at Tabor City’s old football field before South Columbus was built. “After they moved it to South Columbus, I remember it being so crowded that we would just sit on the side of the road and watch the fireworks,” Taylor said. “This event builds a sense of community, and it was a chance to see your friends during the summer when school was out.” Taylor said that attendance has dwindled in the past few years, and she remembers when the bleachers were packed. She wanted people to know that this is a free event and wanted to clear up the misconception of an entrance fee to the show. Audience members salute the flag or cover their hearts during the Pledge ofAllegiance before the fireworks show.
