He told me a gripping story...Ian Rankin did a splendid job - again. He really is the master of atmosphere and dialogue. A must read. What's more, Rankin brought the contrasting characters of Rebus and Fox together. If he is planning to phase Rebus out, Fox is ready to take his place... Very canny indeed.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Days Of YoreBy prisrobThis is the 20th book featuring John Rebus, ex DI, he has been in retirement for three book years. The 17th book was the last of Rebus. It seems Ian Rankin, the author, had run out of Rebus stories. But, his audience of fans were so disappointed, and Rankin so missed Rebus that he found Rebus was needed in Scotland and in Edinburgh in particular. In this novel Rebus's mentee, DI Siobhan Clarke, is on the move, she loves her job as much as Rebus did, and she is almost as good as Rebus.
