00:00:00 Oliver Wang Host Hi everyone. Before we get started today, just wanted to let you know that for the next month’s worth of episodes, we have a special guest co-host sitting in for Morgan Rhodes, who is busy with some incredible music supervision projects. Both Morgan and I couldn’t be more pleased to have arts and culture writer and critic, Ernest Hardy, sitting in for Morgan. And if you recall, Ernest joined us back in 2017 for a wonderful conversation about Sade’s Love Deluxe; which you can find in your feed, in case you want to refamiliarize yourself with Ernest’s brilliance or you just want to listen to a great episode. 00:00:35 Music Music “Crown Ones” off the album Stepfather by People Under The Stairs 00:00:41 Oliver Host Hello, I’m Oliver Wang. 00:00:43 Ernest Host And I’m Ernest Hardy, sitting in for Morgan Rhodes. You’re listening Hardy to Heat Rocks. 00:00:47 Oliver Host Every episode we invite a guest to join us to talk about a heat rock. You know, an album that’s hot, hot, hot. And today, we will be taking a trip to Rydell High School to revisit the iconic soundtrack to the 1978 smash movie-musical, Grease. 00:01:02 Music Music “You’re The One That I Want” off the album Grease: The Original Soundtrack. Chill 1950s rock with a steady beat, guitar, and occasional piano. DANNY ZUKO: I got chills, they're multiplying And I'm losing control 'Cause the power you're supplying It's electrifying! [Music fades out as Oliver speaks] 00:01:20 Oliver Host I was in first grade the year that Grease came out in theaters, and I think one of the only memories I have about the entirety of first grade was when our teacher decided to put on the Grease soundtrack onto the class phonograph and play us “Grease Lightnin’”.

  • Making Over the Talent Show.” in Palmer, Gareth
Pre-publication manuscript of: Redden, G. (2008). “Making Over the Talent Show.” In Palmer, Gareth. 1 (ed), Exposing Lifestyle Television: The Big Reveal. Ashgate, pp 129-144. Making over the Talent Show One of the concerns of recent studies of popular television has been to try to develop understandings of cultural democratisation (Holmes and Jermyn 2004, 9). Much contemporary lifestyle programming revolves around the illustration of good, beneficial choices in the lives of those who act as participants. Of great importance is the characterisation of the people on whom these discourses depend: in the main they are so- called ordinary people who become the focus of scrutiny. This category does not simply arise from marking of persons in terms of class, race, gender, or sexuality so as to equate citizens with normative social identities. The ordinariness at stake is better thought of as a kind of layperson status. Members of the public are shown going about their everyday lives. Their televisual interest is predicated on their initial lack of qualification or complete competence in some aspect of life, and it is this that warrants the intervention of their counterparts: the experts whose advice enables a process of apparent improvement that is the very core of the shows. As Lisa Taylor puts it with reference to gardening television, ‘ordinari-ization’ strategies ‘construct a discourse of lifestyle achievability and accessibility’ (2002, 480). Experts act as counsellors, assisting their clients in fulfilling their stated desires. In the course of this their superior professional knowledge in matters of taste and behaviour is redistributed to the participants, and by extension to the viewing population as a whole.

  • GREASE Is the Word - at Least When It Comes to Recycling
GREASE is the word - at least when it comes to recycling. Ocean County has recently started a used cooking oil and cooking grease recycling program with collection at the county's two regional recycling facilities in Lakewood and Stafford Townships. "When cooking grease is thrown down the drain it solidifies and builds up in local sewerage and septic systems," said Freeholder Deputy Director James F. Lacey. "Over time this waste can clog pipes and threaten backups into homes." Lacey, who is liaison to the county's recycling program, said the program is available only to residents and not businesses. Each house - hold may drop off up to 5 gallons of grease and oil per day. The discarded grease and oil will be recycled into bio-fuels and contaminant-free feed for animals. A 300-gallon tank has been installed at both recycling centers. There is NO FEE to drop off the waste.
