Iyengar Yoga provides practical tools to create and maintain bodily health and vitality, mental clarity, emotional serenity, and spiritual well-being. Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar during his more than 75 years of teaching, Iyengar Yoga is grounded in the ancient Indian tradition and philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Our teachers are rigorously trained and dedicated. Our classes focus on strength and stamina, flexibility and balance, concentration and meditation in action – our method is a pathway to complete alignment. B.K.S. Iyengar has made yoga accessible to and relevant for everyone. 3 FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT The Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York (IYAGNY) touches the lives of thousands of students who seek the profound, intelligent, and transformative impact of the Iyengar Yoga practice. Unique among yoga resources in the New York metropolitan area, IYAGNY was constituted as a non-profit organization because teachers, administrators and students alike are dedicated to a lofty mission: to make Iyengar Yoga available and accessible to all people regardless of age, ability, or means. I am pleased to report that IYAGNY is in a stable financial position. This is in part due to 3,200+ new students who experienced Iyengar Yoga with us for the first time in 2017. In 2017, we increased the number of Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers on faculty to 35 — 15% more than the prior year. We awarded 15 scholarships to students in need. We continue to partner with Brooklyn Community Services to host classes for developmentally disabled adults; and, remain committed to running our free-of-charge classes for students living with HIV and Breast Cancer. Many of you took part in Special Series dedicated to topics from “Healthy Hips” to “Finding Fluidity” in your practice. In 2018, we have an ambitious program of Guest Teachers from around the world—including, Edwin Bryant, the esteemed scholar of Hindu philosophy—who will share their knowledge of the yoga sutras and practice. This year many of our teachers are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mr. Iyengar’s birth by visiting Pune and taking class at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute with members of the Iyengar family. As students, we can look forward to new learnings and a deepening practice as those lessons are transmitted to us by our teachers at the Institute. After a trying year for many of us, IYAGNY has proven time and again to be an essential haven for those devoted to Iyengar Yoga as a means to achieve balance and equanimity. As Mary Dunn wrote more than a decade ago, “Yoga can teach us how to stand on our own two feet and to live within ourselves completely, how to cultivate uninterrupted and complete awareness, and how to investigate, participate, and fully accept the life process.” On behalf of the other Board members, administrative staff, and faculty, I’d like to thank our loyal, longtime students and supporters and ask each of you to share the wisdom, compassion and well-being you’ve gained from your study with others. Sincerely, Caren Rabbino IYAGNY Board President 4 A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTORS For more than 30 years the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York has been providing inspiration and a space for the lifelong practice in the art, science, and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga to an increasingly large and inter-connected community of students and teachers in the greater New York Metropolitan area. In the last three years, the number of CIYTs on Faculty and in our Association have increased by more than 20%. We have set new milestones: in student visits, topping 60,000 in each of the last two years; in total classes taught, offering more than 5,000 individual daily classes in 2017; and, in our fundraising efforts, raising more than $165,000 annually since 2016. Through it all, our commitment to our mission has not wavered, together we: • Inspire and enable progressive lifelong learning and practice in the art, science, and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga • Develop, nurture, and offer teaching of the highest standards • Build and support a community of practitioners within the three-state region of our charter Everything we have accomplished these past 30 years would not be possible without the ongoing, increasing, and tireless efforts of our staff, teachers, Board, students, and volunteers. In a world that is constantly changing, we are lucky to have the profound experience of Iyengar Yoga. During times like these, we take inspiration from the words of Guruji, who once said: “When your body, mind and soul are healthy and harmonious, you will bring health and harmony to those around you and health and harmony to the world – not by withdrawing from the world, but by being a healthy living organ of the body of humanity.” We are dedicated to continually enhancing your learning and understanding as students and teachers. We are motivated by a purpose to honor the transformative effects of Iyengar Yoga, within a space where all are welcome, regardless of age, infirmity, or background. We are honored to serve as Directors of IYAGNY and look forward to a bright future. Sincerely, James Murphy Edward McKeaney Association Director Executive Director 5 ASSOCCIATION TEACHERS & INSTITUTE FACULTY At the heart of our Association are the Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) who spread the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar throughout the tri-state region. With their continued enthusiasm, dedication, and inspired teachings, Iyengar Yoga is reaching thousands in our charter. In 2017, the Association was home to 165 CIYTs. HOW DO YOU BECOME AN IYENGAR YOGA TEACHER? To become a certified teacher, one must take an exam organized through the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United Stated (IYNAUS) called “assessment,” which lasts an entire weekend and includes a demonstrated practice of asana and pranayama, a written exam and a demonstration of teaching approximately 6 poses from their syllabus in 40 or 50 minutes depending on the level of Certification. There are several levels of Certification: Introductory I and II; Intermediate Junior I, II and III; Intermediate Senior I, II and III; Advanced Junior I, II and III; and, Advanced Senior I and II. Candidates must be recommended by two teachers, including a mentor and a recommending teacher and will be assessed by three teachers. They may or may not have attended a formal teacher training program, or may be apprenticing with a more senior teacher. TEACHER TRAINING & CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS Our teacher training program was founded by Mary Dunn when the Institute opened in 1992 and has become a more and more formalized and nationally recognized program of the highest standards. James Murphy has run the program since winter 2008. In 2017, Naghmeh Ahi and Matt Dreyfus joined with Tori Milner as assistants. It is a comprehensive, intensive two-year program. The main principle is to learn how to teach by teaching with on-the-spot feedback. It also explores basic anatomy and philosophy in addition to covering the asanas and pranayamas on the Introductory certification. Our continuing education classes are offered to all Certified Association Teachers once a month in the winter, spring and summer, but typically not in the fall as that is when assessments take place. These 4-hour classes cover poses on all the certification syllabi.
