hile a patient at our hospital, it is likely you will be assigned a Hospitalist, an internal medicine- certified doctor who acts as a Wprimary care physician in an acute care hospital setting. This doctor will follow you during your stay, consult with your own primary care physician and the hospital’s nursing staff, and work together with you during your stay, in order to provide the best care possible.

Overseeing this team of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center (MSMHC) Hospitalists is our new Director of Hospitalists, internal medicine physician Irina Brown, MD. Dr. Brown says she was drawn to the position here because she appreciates serving a community with diverse medical needs. She believes in giving as much information as possible to patients and working in collaboration to provide individualized care.

“I believe in hospital associates working together as a team, and, as a physician, in putting yourself in the patient’s shoes and knowing they have their own unique history, their own unique medical condition, and their own family, which all factor in to their stay,” said Dr. Brown. “I believe in treating patients to ensure that not only do they get better clinically, they also enjoy their stay and feel informed during the process.”

Dr. Brown spent ten years as an OB/GYN in her Irina Brown, MD native Russia, working for the Minister of Director of Hospitalists Defense. When Dr. Brown came to the U.S., she earned a board certification in internal medicine. Dr. Shah will discuss strategies you can use to reduce your risk of stroke. She’ll also explain the warning signs of a stroke, and what you should do if you think you or someone you know may be having one.

Dr. Constantino will detail what you can expect during stroke treatment and recovery, and provide suggestions as to how to Anne Constantino, MD, and Aabha A. Shah, MD, MedStar Georgetown Neurology at MedStar Southern prevent future strokes. Maryland Hospital Center

A Message from MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center’s Chairman of Cardiology

Dear Community Member:

In this issue, I would like to tell you about one important action you can take that could help someone who is experiencing a heart attack, and one exciting new development in heart care for our hospital.

Every month, we see cases where a patient comes in after suffering a Myocardial Infarction (MI), or heart attack, having not received any chest compressions to help them when they are in distress. Chest compressions are vitally important to a person immediately after a heart attack. Compressions force blood through the William Suddath, MD heart to get oxygen to all parts of the body and without oxygen, cells can die. I Chairman, Cardiology urge everyone to find a local CPR course and learn the skills to help save a life. MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center See the information below to help find a course in your area.

I would also like to take this opportunity to tell you about how effectively our hospital is able to treat heart attacks and other emergency heart issues. As you will read on the next page, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center (MSMHC) has emerged as an area leader in heart care, with patients being airlifted directly to our hospital for important, lifesaving treatment. We are proud to have been recognized for our treatment in cardiac care, and look forward to expanding services and staying up-to-date on the latest technologies and treatments.

Sincerely,

William Suddath, MD Chairman, Cardiology MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center
