    Introduction The World Ballet Festival Returns for Summer 2018 From the 14th World Ballet FestivalPhoto: Kiyonori Hasegawa For more than 40 years now, the most talented and renowned dancers have come to Tokyo from around the world to perform in the World Ballet Festival, which will once again be held this summer. When it was first introduced in 1976 under the leadership of Tadatsugu Sasaki, it was very rare for the star ballerinas of different companies or countries to share a stage. Its first edition caused an international sensation by bringing together three legends, Margot Fonteyn from the UK, Maya Plisetskaya from the Soviet Union and Alicia Alonso from Cuba. Since then stars such as Jorge Donn, Patrick Dupond, Sylvie Guillem, Alessandra Ferri, Manuel Legris and Vladimir Malakhov have become regular participants, bringing the audiences to a storm of excitement every time and inspiring them to watch and compare all the dancers perform. The circle of energy created between audiences and artists in this festival produces an atmosphere that motivates dancers to perform to the best of their abilities, and has resulted in many legendary performances. Featuring the world's leading dancers, all from different artistic backgrounds and representing a wide variety of repertoire and styles, the festival also offers an opportunity to observe an overview of today's ballet scene. While there are now many similar festivals, the quality of both artists and audiences at the World Ballet Festival continues to be amongst the highest in the world.     2019 Guest Artists Jorge Barani was Born in Matanzas, Cuba and graduated from the National School of Art Ballet in Havana, Cuba. In 2010, he joined the Ballet de Monterrey Company in Mexico. Barani came to the United States in August 2012. He was invited to the final YAGP gala in New York, dancing with Maria Kochetkova from San Francisco Ballet. In 2013, he won two Gold Medals at the World Ballet Competition USA and joined the Kentucky Ballet Theatre in 2014, as a Principal Dancer. He has danced leading roles in Peter Pan, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Paquita, La Sylphide, Le Corsaire, Harlequinade, Don Quixote, Paris Flames, Talisman, Diana and Actaeon, Laurencia, and contemporary and neoclassical works. In 2015, Barani won the Silver Medal at The Korea International Ballet Competition, in 2016 he won the Gold Medal at Vienna International Ballet Competition and the Silver Medal at Varna International Ballet Competition. Barani has also been invited to dance in international galas in Europe, Asia, Canada, and Mexico . Katia Carranza, born in Monterrey, MX, graduated from the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza de Monterrey in 1996 and joined Ballet de Monterrey as a soloist. In 1998, Ms. Carranza was hired by the Miami City Ballet as a Corps de Ballet and in 2004, was promoted to Principal Dancer. In 2007, she rejoined Ballet de Monterrey as a Principal Dancer and stayed as a guest dancer with Miami City Ballet. In 2017, she rejoined Miami City Ballet full time to the present. Principal casting for the production is announced today and sees Lead Principals Alina Cojocaru and Isaac Hernández, Lead Principals Erina Takahashi and Joseph Caley, Lead Principal Jeffrey Cirio and Guest Artist Maria Kochetkova, and First Soloist Emma Hawes and Principal Francesco Gabriele Frola dance the roles of Cinderella and Prince Guillaume respectively. Kochetkova joins English National Ballet as Guest Artist for performances of Cinderella having previously danced the title role with San Francisco Ballet. Born in Moscow, the international ballet star trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School before going on to dance with companies across the world including The Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky Theatres, and English National Ballet (2003-2007). Also announced today are those dancing the role of Benjamin, the prince’s friend: Jeffrey Cirio, Francesco Gabriele Frola, Soloist Ken Saruhashi, and First Artist Barry Drummond. Co-produced by English National Ballet and the Royal Albert Hall, Wheeldon’s inventive staging, with over 130 dancers working on the production, combines magnificent sets and costumes, theatrical surprises, and lively choreography set to Prokofiev’s famous score performed by English National Ballet Philharmonic, in what promises to be the ballet spectacular of 2019. Working from the darkly intriguing Brothers Grimm version of the story, Wheeldon originally created Cinderella to great acclaim for Dutch National Ballet and San Francisco Ballet: he and his creative team now reunite for the re-staging of this sparkling ballet.

    GREETINGS FROM THE FOUNDERS Dear Friends, Today would have marked the start of the YAGP 2020 Finals. More than 1,500 of the most promising young dancers from 36 countries would have gathered in New York to audition for up to $500,000 in scholarships to the world’s leading dance academies. The world’s largest dance homecoming event would have begun, with dancers flying in from all 5 connents to see their longme friends. And stars of today’s most celebrated dance companies would have started to arrive for the YAGP 2020 Gala at Lincoln Center. Instead, we are facing a new reality. As the world grapples with the pandemic, we are reminded of just how fragile and interconnected we all are. We are also reminded of how strong we are as a family. The world’s largest dance homecoming is sll happening – online – and not just for NYC finalists, but for the enre YAGP dance community worldwide. Judges and ballet stars are sll connecng to students and audiences via online classes, discussions and expert advice. And scholarships will find their recipients. Coordinang scholarship offers and acceptances between dozens of preeminent dance schools and hundreds of talented students across the globe is no small task – but our arsc team is ready for the challenge. We have launched a Virtual Scholarship Survey to create the world’s largest database of dancers, whom we will continuously match with existing scholarship opportunities. In the meantime, we invite you to join us in taking a look at the highlights of the incredible journey that was YAGP’s 2020 Semi-Final Season.
