TITLE: Edward William Archibald Fonds

DATES: 1895-1945.

EXTENT: 60 cm of textual records and 2 photographs.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: A native of Montreal, Edward Archibald received his M.D., C.M. from McGill University in 1896. After post-graduate work in France, Germany and England, he joined the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1904 as Assistant Surgeon. He was Major in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during and it was at the McGill General Hospital in Boulogne that he developed new techniques in the treatment of war wounds especially those to the lungs. In 1923 Archibald became a Senior Professor of Surgery at McGill University, and in 1939 was named Surgeon-in-Chief of the Royal Victoria Hospital. In the Second World War he served as a consulting surgeon to the Directorate of Medical Services in , and at the time of his death was working on a book about war wounds.

CUSTODIAL HISTORY: Acc. 6 was recuperated from a basket by W.W. Francis, 31 March 1943, acc. 545 by Archibald’s daughter, Mrs. Griselda Christmas 1977-1980 and from Rocke Robertson in 1978, and acc. 828 is a gift from Dr. C. Allan, March 1983. Old accession numbers 6, 545 and 828.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds includes Dr. Archibald’s correspondence and reports pertaining to the Ministry of National Defence, 1940-1945; certificates and diplomas; and a photograph. The correspondents include family members, Dr. John McCrae and Sir . There is also a draft of a book on wound ballistics and gas gangrene; an Army Field Service book, 1916 and two notebooks on internal and external pathology, “matiere medicale et therapeutique,” and “medecine legale et toxicologie,” 1895.
