INTRODUCTION Ice hockey is a physically demanding sport that often seems brutal and violent from the spectator’s point of view. In fact, ice hockey is often referred to as a combination of blood, sweat and beauty. The game demands athletes who are in top physical condition and can maintain nonstop motion at high speed. HISTORY OF THE GAME Ice hockey originated in Canada in the 19th cen- tury. The first formal game was played in Kingston, Ontario in 1855. McGill University started playing ice hockey in the 1870s. W. L. Robertson, a student at McGill, wrote the first set of rules for ice hockey. Canada’s Governor General, Lord Stanley of Preston, offered a tro- phy to the winner of the 1893 ice hockey games. This was the origin of the now-famed Stanley Cup. Ice hockey was first played in the U. S. in 1893 at Johns Hopkins and Yale universities, respec- tively. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 29, 2021 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS SIGN ALL-STAR DEFENSEMAN ZACH WERENSKI TO SIX-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION THROUGH 2027-28 SEASON COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Zach Werenski to a six-year, $57.5 million contract extension through the 2027-28 National Hockey League season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced tonight. Werenski, 24, has registered 65 goals and 124 assists for 189 points with 71 penalty minutes and a +13 plus/minus rating, while averaging 22:43 in time on ice in 335 career NHL games. Since making his debut with Columbus in 2016, he ranks tied for third among NHL blueliners in goals and 19th in points. He is the club’s all-time leader in goals by a defenseman, while ranking second in points and fourth in assists. “Zach Werenski has been one of the top defensemen in the National Hockey League over the past five years and we are thrilled that he will continue to be a Blue Jacket and the leader of our blueline for at least the next seven years,” said Kekalainen. “As talented as Zach is and as much as he has achieved so early in his career, he is an even better person and will be a foundational player for our club as we move forward.” Columbus’ first pick, eighth overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft, Werenski tallied 7-13-20 and 13 penalty minutes in 35 games, while ranking second on the club in time on ice (24:11 avg.) in 2020-21. -

It’s been a common refrain for the Winnipeg Jets lately, as they just can’t seem to get close to a full, healthy lineup. Seven players were out due to injury in Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Philadelphia. Here’s what we know about all of them, with further updates expected today as the Jets return to action with a morning skate and then their game in Washington against the Capitals. Mark Scheifele has missed two games with a suspected shoulder injury, and there will be no rushing him back into action. He’s considered day-to-day at this point, and coach Paul Maurice had said last week he was a possibility to play either tonight, or tomorrow in Nashville. But don’t bet on it. Defenceman Toby Enstrom is battling a lower-body issue which kept him out for four games, saw him return in New Jersey last Thursday and then be back out on Saturday. Maurice said it’s a nagging thing that can change day-to-day, so his status is very much a question mark. Defenceman Dmitry Kulikov missed Saturday’s game after getting hurt Thursday in New Jersey. Maurice hasn’t said how long he could be out, only that it’s upper-body. Goalie Steve Mason has been sent back to Winnipeg for further testing on a lower-body injury he suffered late in the game against the New York Rangers last Tuesday, which was his first game back from his second concussion of the season. -

Postgame Notes & Quotes Los Angeles Kings 7, Colorado Avalanche 1 Thursday, March 22, 2018 Anze Kopitar registered four goals for the first time in his career, matching the Kings record for most goals in a game last reached by Luc Robitaille on Nov. 25, 1993 at Quebec. Kopitar recorded his fourth career hat trick and first since Feb. 12, 2016 at New York Rangers. Nathan MacKinnon extended his point streak to a career-long 14 games, the longest active streak in the NHL and third-longest this season behind Taylor Hall (19) and Patrik Laine (15). It’s the longest point streak by an Avalanche player since Paul Stastny’s 20-game run in 2006-07. Mikko Rantanen extended his point streak to eight games, matching his career-long streak set earlier this year (Dec. 12-29). He also became the fourth Finnish player to register 80 points in a season (Jari Kurri, Teemu Selanne, Olli Jokinen) and the fifth Finnish-born player to reach the mark (Tomas Sandstrom was born in Finland but represented Sweden in international competition). MacKinnon (9g, 12a) and Rantanten (7g, 14a) each have 21 points this month, tied for the league lead in scoring in March. Nikita Zadorov recorded a career high 15 hits, an Avalanche record and the most by any NHL player in a single game since 2005-06. The Avalanche was 1-for-2 on the penalty kill, just the ninth time Colorado has surrendered a power-play goal at home in 2017-18. The Avs are 107-for-116 (92.2%) on the penalty kill on home ice, the top-ranked PK unit in the league. -

The EuroChem Cup will take place May 25-30 in Novomoskovsk, a town of 130,000 in the Tula Region. This will be the first time in the EuroChem Cup’s history that a team from the United States will compete alongside youngsters from Belgium, Estonia, Fin- land, Germany, Lithuania, Switzerland and Russia. The team, dubbed the Albany Capitals, has 14 players committed to the event. The youngsters, ages 10-12, come from the Capital Region and Central New York, said head coach Brad Chartrand. Chartrand is a former NHL player who spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. “This is an incredible opportunity for our kids to get out there, see the world, learn how others play hockey and potentially forge life-long friendships,” said the 43-year- old coach. “We also recognize the importance of visiting our sister city, Tula, and hope that we can have a Russian hockey team come here to the Albany area to visit New York and play hockey in the future as we build this partnership.” This will be Chartrand’s third trip to Russia: He first visited the country in 1997, while playing for the Canadian National Hockey Team. -
