Lake Wendouree was the site of the 1956 Olympic Games rowing events and 2014 World Rowing Masters Regatta and today is one of Ballarat’s premier recreational-tourist attractions offering rowing, fishing and sailing activities. It is surrounded by a 6.1 km walking – running track and high quality nationally recognised Botanical gardens. During the Millennium Drought of 2000–2010, the Lake (some 220ha in size and at capacity holds 3,300ML of water) was effectively dry during the summer months. Prior to the drought, Central Highlands Water would provide up to 700ML p.a. of water to keep the Lake topped up. During 2006-08 severe Stage 4 water restrictions banned all external water use through the community. The site tour will show how the integration of stormwater (250ML p.a), Class A recycled water (600ML p.a.), rainfall and groundwater has ensured that the lake levels through all climatic conditions can be maintained. This ensures the that Lake and other key community facilities can be relied upon for major tourism events which provide substantial economic boosts to the community. The tour will also take in some of the major strategic growth areas of Ballarat and site tours of the Ballarat North Water Reclamation Plant, Eureka Stadium, local Wetlands and Victoria Park. The tour will be held on Thursday 1 March 2018 over 2 sessions, with a 9am or 1.30pm departure option from the Mercure Ballarat and Central Highlands Water by bus, returning back at 12noon or 4.30pm. Registrations to attend either tour must be online no later than Wednesday 21 February, 2018. NEXT IWA CONFERENCE 5 – 6 July, 2018 Venue: Crown Melbourne, 8 Whiteman Street Southbank, Melbourne, Victoria 3006.
