Clues That Point to the Birth Family of Archibald Jardine

Father Michael Jardine 1758-1830 Mother Jane/Jean Johnson/Johnston 1760-1826 Spouse Children Archibald 1786-1868 Margaret Hannay Helen 1789-1832 George McCulloch Margaret 1789/1791-1853 John Waugh Jane 1794-1872 Peter Douglas David 1796-1864 Ann Hope Edward ? [1800-1846 Sarah Elizabeth Ferrand] Michael 1802-1833

This is my best guess for Archibald Jardine’s parents and siblings. There are clues that link the first five children. The Edward I found fits the bill for being a sibling, but there are no extra clues that provide a good family link. All I know about the child Michael is his name on the memorial at St. Ninian’s. It is odd that none of the Jardine siblings named a child Michael, after the father or the brother. When Archibald entered the Crichton Royal Institution, it was noted that he had two uncles and a brother who were “idiotical.” Back in the 1800s, “idiots” were those who had a congenital incapacity with no intervals of sanity. Perhaps the child Michael, born when his mother was 42, suffered an impairment which put a stigma on his name.

Here are some of the major clues that brought this family together.

Graveyard Monument Inscriptions

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, James Birchman retired to Wigtownshire and spent his time recording monument inscriptions in the neighboring graveyards. The inscriptions have been published by the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Research Centre, 9 Glasgow Street, Dumfries, DG2 9AF.

St. Ninian’s Old Churchyard in Whithorn has the following headstone, Grave 344 (see attached map):

St. Ninian’s is also the burial place for Helen Jardine McCulloch and Jane Jardine Douglas and their families. Margaret Jardine Waugh is buried in the Wigtown Old Kirkyard (Laigh Kirk).

On November 18, 2010, Annabel McKie posted this entry on the genealogy.com forum - http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/jardine/637/

My ancestor is Helen Jardine, born Whithorn c 1789 who married George McCulloch. She was my great great great grandmother. I have a photograph album with pictures (taken in New York) of Archibald and his wife, also George E. Jardine and his wife, various McNellies, Marshes and others, pretty much all the children of Archibald and his wife, and their children. But I don’t know how Archibald and my ancestor Helen were related - could they have been brother and sister?

National Records of Scotland, Valuation Rolls for Whithorn Burgh - https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/search-our-records

Valuation rolls were local tax rolls, compiled every year in Scotland from 1855 onwards, listing the owners and occupiers of most buildings in Scotland.

David Jardine, draper, of Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England, owned three houses on the east side of Main Street in Whithorn which he rented to David and Edward McCulloch. There are listings for the years 1855 through 1866. Here is part of the entry for 1865.

Ancestry.com username ihstationancestry includes a Word document with more information about Edward Jardine and Sarah Ferrand. This user reports that Edward Jardine is buried in an unmarked grave (with 10 others) in York Cemetery. One paragraph reads: His address was Clarence Street. The cause of death was multiple injuries from an accident. He seems a likely candidate as Sarah’s husband although there are some inconsistencies. On the death certificate he is recorded as a “labourer” but the register entry for his burial in York cemetery has him as a “Licensed Hawker”. Neither of these occupations apparently coincides with him being a draper five years earlier in the census or a tea dealer the year before that. However, the death certificate of his son John, fourteen years later, in 1860 states that his father, Edward, was a “licensed tea hawker”, a description which coincides closely with the burial record, suggesting that this Edward is more than likely to have been Sarah’s husband. References to “Clarence Street” and “accident” as cause of death probably come from burial information at York Cemetery. ihstationancestry is probably Ivan Hargreaves who died in 2014 - son of George Hargreaves and Maud Willis.
