    Benedictine University Annual Report 2010 | 2011 A Message from the Office of Business and Finance Charles Gregory Executive Vice President Allan Gozum Vice President of Finance hank you to everyone for helping make this a great year. We are pleased to provide you with our financial results for fiscal 2011. The University was blessed with another year of record enrollment and a second consecutive year of favorable investment returns. We ended the year with exceptional liquidity. Given the absence of a large endowment and state operating Tsupport, the balance sheet’s liquidity provides a shield against the uncertain economic environment and sets aside necessary resources to help finance future strategic initiatives. As a follow up to last year’s message, construction of the more than 400-space parking garage was completed during the year, and the renovation of the Rice Center athletic facility was substantially completed at the time of this writing. A $13.3 million tax-exempt bond issue was used as the primary means to finance both projects. As I reflect on our 2020 fiscal year, I am struck by how much our lives have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a peaceful year transformed into a time like no other we have experienced in our lifetimes. At Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet, we have witnessed the devastation that the pandemic has created for so many of our neighbors who live on low incomes. On the frontline, we met countless families that lost their incomes and could no longer afford their basic living expenses. Working hours were reduced at jobs. Furloughs created months without a paycheck. All of these factors contributed to an increase in the number of individuals seeking help. The photo on the cover of this report shows hundreds of cars lined up in rows for our Mobile Food Pantry at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield. It’s a heartbreaking visual to represent the increased need in the community. Individuals arrived hours before these events began to ensure that they would receive a box of healthy food. Some Mobile Food Pantry locations witnessed four times the number of participants than in prior months. Catholic Charities responded to this need by increasing the number of Mobile Food Pantry events around the Diocese.

    The Abbot President’s Circular Letter November 2017 _______________________________________________________________________________________ Union of American Benedictine Presidents: The Presidents of the American Congregations and Federations of monastic men and women met on May 15-16, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, MN. The meeting focused on a variety of common concerns and initiatives, including the allocation of proceeds from RB1980. Union of Superiors General: Abbot President Elias Lorenzo, O.S.B. joined other abbots president and superiors general at the 89th Assembly at the Salesianum in Rome, Italy from May 24-26, 2017. The focus of work during the assembly was preparation for the Synod on Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment, specifically the role of consecrated life in discernment by young people in their life choices. Several papers were given including, “Consecrated Life in an Intercultural World Today” by Father Arturo Sossa, S.J., and “Vocational Discernment in an Intercultural World,” by Father Mark Weber, S.V.D. The following superiors offered responses: Father Matthew Vattamattam, C.F.M, Father Leocir Pessini, M.I., and Father Tesayae Gebresilaise, M.C.C.J. Abbot President Jeremias Schroeder, O.S.B. of the St. Ottilien Congregation served as the assembly moderator. Archbishop Jose Rodriguez Carballo, O.F.M., secretary to the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life gave an update on upcoming initiatives of the dicastery, including… 1. Introduction - Membership: Since the last congress in 2012, the International Commission on Benedictine Education (ICBE) has hosted two conference of the Benedictine Educators’ Network (BeNet), on in Manila in 2013 and more recently in Rome in 2016. There have also been a some changes in the membership of ICBE since 2012. Br. Edward Englund, OSB, delegate for BeNet North America (USA) was called home to the Lord shortly after our last meeting in Manila. We remember him with affection and commend his soul to the mercy of God. The new delegate for BeNet North America is Mr. Tim Molak, currently headmaster of Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, California. After many years of dedicated service, Sr. Mary McDonald, RGS has stepped down from the commission. The new delegate for BeNet Pacific (Australia), is Sr. Meg Kahler, RGS, in her role as a member of the Good Samaritan Education Mission. Mrs. Luz Maria Eguiguren stepped down as delegate for BeNet Latin America in order to assume a new role on the commission as our secretary for three years 2013-2016, replacing Fr. Geraldo Gonzalez y Lima, OSB of Colegio Santo Amercio in São Paolo, Brazil and currently serving as the treasurer of the Benedictine Confederation at Sant'Anselmo in Rome as well as host for BeNet 2016. The new delegate for the Spanish speaking schools of BeNet Latin America is Mr. Cristobal Valdez, emeritus headmaster of Colegio S. Anselmo, Santiago, Chile. XXXIII, No. 1 Fall 2016 2016 NATIONAL LATIN EXAM SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS The National Latin Exam is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s $2,000 scholarships. The NLE has designated one of these scholarships, given by an anonymous donor, as the Doris Kays Memorial Scholarship. Doris served for many years as Chair of the NLE Scholarship Committee. Our scholarship winners became eligible as high school seniors because they won gold medals on the 2016 NLE level III, IV, V, or VI exams. These scholars must take two semesters of Latin or ancient Greek language as college freshmen. They will be eligible to renew their scholarships each year if they continue their study of Latin or Greek. As juniors and seniors, they are required to have a declared major of Classics, Latin, or Greek. What is your story? What events in your life brought you to where you are now? What did you learn from various parts of your story? We have just completed the Easter Season where we have been reenergized by the stories of the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus and his encounters with many of His disciples. They also have their stories. Here at Sacred Heart Monastery we have been telling our stories. As you may well be aware, we have been having a “Tuesday Night with the Sisters” during this Year of Consecrated Life. These evenings have been prepared by our Vocation Advisory Council which consists of three Benedictine Sisters and three lay women. In January, we viewed and discussed a documentary film entitled God is the Bigger Elvis. It is the story of actress Dolores Hart “retreating” at Regina Laudis Abbey in Connecticut for a rest from her busy, stress filled acting life. Ultimately, despite a successful career of acting and while being engaged, this Come and See experience led her to enter that cloistered community. Mother Dolores Hart and the sisters in her community shared their stories. Viewing the movie and reflecting on my story, I again realized the importance of a Come and See experience. Coming from my home town in Colorado to visit the Benedictine Sisters at Sacred Heart in Lisle convinced me of my vocation.
