The sting of the Aculeata or stinging wasps is a modifed ovipositor; its function (killing or paralyzing prey, defense against predators) and the associated anatomical changes are apomorphic for Aculeata. The change in the purpose of the ovipositor/sting from being primarily an egg laying device to being primarily a weapon has resulted in modifcation of its handling that is supported by specifc morphological adaptations. Here, we focus on the sheaths of the sting (3rd valvulae = gonoplacs) in Aculeata, which do not penetrate and envenom the prey but are responsible for cleaning the ovipositor proper and protecting it from damage, identifcation of the substrate for stinging, and, in some taxa, contain glands that produce alarm pheromones. -

Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

José A. Mejías, Mariano García del Rey & Jose L. Silva Variability in prickly sow-thistle (Sonchus asper) from western Mediterranean region Abstract Mejías, J. A., García del Rey M. & Silva J. L.: Variability in prickly sow-thistle (Sonchus asper) from western Mediterranean region. — Bocconea 24: 285-293. 2012. — ISSN 1120-4060. We studied the morphological variability of Sonchus asper (L.) Hill in the western Mediterranean region by means of multivariate analysis. A two-step clustering method indicat- ed that selection of a two-cluster model was optimal, with anther length and ligule length as the main characters contributing to cluster delimitation. These variables presented a general bimodal pattern of frequency distribution, denoting the presence of two floral morphotypes in the complex that, although partially sympatric, seem to show distinct geographical ranges and important differences in their reproductive systems. In addition, a preliminary karyological analysis yielded differences in chromosome morphology between the two morphs. Possible tax- onomic implications of this variability are discussed. We propose the segregation of plants showing different flower morphotype as different taxa at specific level: large-flowered plants should be designated as Sonchus nymanni Tineo & Guss. in Guss., while small-flowered plants correspond to Sonchus asper (L.) Hill. Introduction Prickly sow-thistle (S. asper (L.) Hill) is a common weed with a cosmopolitan distri- bution, although it appears to be introduced in the New World and some tropical areas (Reiche 1910: 39, Boulos 1973). At present, the variability of the species is commonly resolved by subdivision into two taxa: the typical subspecies and one more subspecies des- ignated, depending on the authors, as S. -

Dezember 2008 ISBN 3-938249-08-0 The Moths Fauna (Lepidoptera) of Şile in the Asian Part of Istanbul Province, Turkey (pl. 39) Thomas BARON Key Words: Lepidoptera, Noctuoidea, Turkey, Istanbul Stichworte: Lepidoptera, Noctuoidea, Türkei, Istanbul Deutsche Zusammenfassung Der vorliegende Artikel berichtet über die Fangergebnisse von Noctuoiden und anderen Nachtfaltern in Şile, einer Kleinstadt am Schwarzen Meer in Westanatolien / Türkei. Der Ort und der Landkeis Şile sind Teil der Provinz Istanbul. Einige weitere Fangergeb- nisse des Autors in anderen Teilen der Provinz Istanbul sind ebenfalls aufgeführt. Betrachtet wurden Arten der Familien Notodontidae, Nolidae, Arctiidae, Lymantriidae, Erebidae, Noctuidae, Sphingidae, Lasiocam- pidae, Saturniidae, Drepanidae und Thyatiridae. Nicht berücksichtigt wurden Microlepidoptera und Geometridae. Die Artenliste wurde, wo nötig oder sinnvoll, mit einigen zusätzlichen Angaben angereichert, die allgemeine Verbreitung, ähnliche Arten oder das Vorkommen in Şile und anderen Teilen der Provinz Istanbul kommentieren. Für jede Art wird mit römischen Ziffern angegeben, in welchem Monat die Fänge erfolgt sind. Hierbei bedeutet (b) Anfang, (m) Mitte und (e) Ende des Monats. Die Zahl der gefangenen Spezimens wurde als grober Schätzwert für die tatsächliche Häufigkeit verwandt und die Arten dement- sprechend in vier Kategorien eingeteilt: vc – sehr häufig c – häufig s - vereinzelt r – selten Es wird deutlich, dass die Fauna Istanbuls derjenigen Rumäniens und mehr noch derjenigen Bulgariens ähnelt, beides Länder, die ebenfalls am Schwarzen Meer liegen. Da Istanbul aber auch mediterranen Einflüssen unterliegt, ist eine stärkere Vertretung des mediterranen Faunenelementes zu beobachten. Nur eine der festgestellten Arten wurde bisher in Bulgarien noch nicht gefunden, für Rumänien sind es einige mehr. -

Naumann 8 Storai Naumann *) Abstract This paper continues previous studies on the Zygaena purpuralis-complex, which have dealt with the variabili- ty and consistency of morphological characters of euro- pean populations. The reproductive isolation of Zygaena purpuralis (BRÜNNICH, 1763) and Zygaena minos ([DENIS & SCHIFFERMÜLLER] , 1775) is proved for the whole of Asia minor, and for Transcaucasia. In most parts of Asia mi- nor both species are sympatric, in certain areas even syntopic, but Zygaena minos has not been recorded in re- cent times from the most northwestern part of the coun- try. Vascular Plants of Williamson County Sonchus asper− PRICKLY SOWTHISTLE [Asteraceae] Sonchus asper (L.) Hill, PRICKLY SOWTHISTLE. Annual (biennial herb), spinescent, taprooted, in range rosetted, 1-stemmed at base, often unbranched below flowering canopy, erect, in range 15–60 cm tall; shoots with basal leaves and cauline leaves, in range basal leaves present at flowering, often somewhat glaucous with waxy exudate, appearing glabrous, axes sometimes with stalked glands aging as prickles and spines on blade margins; latex milky, copious. Stems: 5–6-ridged most of length but with fewer ridges near branch ends, in range to 10 mm diameter, with ridge descending from each leaf, acutely angled to winged immediately below leaf becoming weakly angled farther from leaf, green and striped with pinkish or purplish red veins; internodes hollow; nodes solid with a thin diaphragm. Leaves: helically alternate, pinnately to shallowly lobed, and unlobed, sessile with appressed basal lobes (auricles), without stipules; blade of basal and large cauline leaves obovate, oblanceolate, 60–180+ × 15–60+ mm, with rounded, coarsely basal lobed with lobes often curved, densely prickly-dentate and ± wavy on margins base- to-tip, each tooth with a spine, some teeth pointed up alternating with others pointed down, thicker and slightly inrolled on margins, rounded to acute at tip, pinnately veined with fleshy midrib, the midrib thick-triangular in ×-section on lower surface, glabrous, glaucous, upper surface midrib flat to slightly convex and white to pink, lower surface midrib sometimes white to red-purple; blade of cauline leaves oblong to lanceolate, clasping-lobed at base, acute to acuminate with spine at tip, pinnately veined, sometimes with sparse, clusters of inconspicuous, colorless, glandular hairs.
