INTRODUCTION Materials collected and organized by Thorp as histories of the Missouri River, steamboats, and Miami, Missouri. Includes photographs, newspaper clippings, bills, receipts, excerpts from the Miami Weekly News, and miscellaneous items. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by James T. Thorp on 16 January 1956 (Accession No. _____). SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The focus of the collection is the photographs. The photos in volumes 1-3 document over one hundred steamboats, packets, ferries, towboats, snagboats, and excursion boats. Volume 6 contains a pictorial history of Thorp's hometown, Miami, Missouri. The newspaper clippings and articles found in volumes 4,5,7, and 8 augment the photographs. For preservation reasons the scrapbooks have been taken apart and placed in folders. FOLDER LIST Vol.1-3 Photographs of steamboats, primarily those operating on the Missouri River. Brief explanatory passages and captions contain information on boat size, construction, crew, route, cargo, and final disposition. Vol. 4 Newspaper clippings, photographs, and articles written by Thorp on the Missouri River, its history, its lore, and activity along the river. Vol. 5-8 History of Miami, Missouri, from its first settlement. Consists of photographs, newspaper clippings, bills, postcards, advertisements, tax receipts, and excerpts from the Miami Weekly News.
