ather Egbert (Robert Hall) was born Jan. 8, 1900, at Seward. He 105 Layton Street Fwent to St. Joseph School in Ellinwood for his elementary educa- tion. At the age of 12 he entered high school at Mount Calvary, Wisc., but transferred to St. Benedict’s High School in Atchison in 1914. He was sent to St. Vincent’s Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa., to begin his no- vitiate with the Benedictines in 1919. After completing his studies in Atchison, he was ordained on May 29, 1926, in St. Benedict’s Church by the Most Rev. John Ward, bishop of Leavenworth. He elected to take the name Egbert after hearing a mission in Seward given by a Passionist Father who had that name. He celebrated his first Mass at St. Church on June 3, 1926. Early on he served as chaplain and instructor at Maur Hill School, Atchison, and then St. Benedict’s College. In 1933, he was appointed assistant at St. John’s, Burlington, Iowa. He received his first pastorate in 1934 at Immaculate Conception, Val- ley Falls, with the mission at St. Aloysius, Meridan. Father Egbert received an unusual assignment in 1942 when the ab- bot sent him to Sahuyo, Mexico, to help with the opening of a school.
