26 ENGLISH AND MATHS

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. These skills can also mean higher earnings in the future! If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and maths GCSEs, you will be required to study English and maths as part of your study programme, alongside your chosen subject. But don’t worry - we have a friendly and experienced team who will provide support with everything from learning labs and revision sessions to online resources. It may even be that you already have a grade 4 or above in these subjects but wish to achieve a higher grade. We can also support you to do this too!

27 DISCOVER VOCATIONAL

You will have probably heard the word ‘vocational’ or ‘BTECs’ thrown around a lot, and are wondering what it all means.

Well, vocational or BTEC, refers to one or two-year courses that allow you to choose one subject, to study full-time. The best part about these courses is that they are very practical, hands-on and enable you to spend lots of time learning the skills needed to be successful in your chosen career. They are also entirely misunderstood! Many assume that vocational courses are not as valuable as A levels but this is completely untrue. They can still give you the opportunity to go to university, complete an apprenticeship or secure employment. Some provide the same amount of UCAS Tariff Points as A levels, with Russell Group universities accepting BTECs as entry qualifications. In the past year alone, over 300 of our level 3 vocational students progressed to universities around the country!

THE COMPLETE VOCATIONAL PACKAGE

Alongside your vocational course, you will complete valuable work experience in your chosen industry, receive one-to-one support in tutorials and participate in enrichment activities. Also, if it is required, you will study GCSE English and/or maths alongside your course.

Apprenticeships are a great way to develop your skills and experience on-the-job whilst gaining a recognised qualification. One of the many benefits is, you’ll get paid to do it. An apprenticeship is an actual job, meaning that you’ll spend more time out in the workplace than in the classroom, learning and perfecting your skills. So, if you prefer to learn by doing, then an apprenticeship is a great place to start. There are so many apprenticeships to choose from across a huge range of industries, so you will never be stuck for choice. Apprenticeships can take one to four years to complete, depending on which level you start at and the type of apprenticeship you choose. This means by the time you complete it, you’ll know your job inside and out, and could have the chance to move up the career ladder. Take a look at the apprenticeships that we offer within the course areas.
