Exhibits are a good choice when you want to share Church history with a broad and diverse audience. Many people learn best by seeing, hearing, and experiencing something. Exhibits can help you communicate to these people more effectively. Furthermore, the use of authentic objects and first-person storytell- ing can be powerful and effective ways to build faith and understanding. Exhibits should be well-designed and theme- based so that visitors clearly understand the messages you intend to deliver. Church members and non–Latter-day Saints who visit a simple, clear exhibit will feel the Spirit and have their faith in Jesus Christ strengthened. 1 This guide will help you create and manage a Church history exhibit using a five-step process. 1. Generate Ideas and Create a Concept Proposal 2. Design 3. Build 4. Share 5. Evaluate As you review these steps, you may contact the Church History Department with questions. Several government agencies and reputable museums have also produced good materials that can help you design and implement successful exhibits. Ideas and re- quests for exhibits can come from many sources: Church departments, the Area Presidency, other ecclesiastical leaders, you yourself, and other Church members. As a Church history adviser, you can do much to help promote and organize efforts to create exhibits. Before you begin gathering objects and design- ing an exhibit, it is important to organize and for- mulate your thoughts. This is best accomplished by utilizing a group of people to brainstorm ideas. As these ideas begin to take shape, use the exhibit concept proposal template to help you develop a solid plan. This template can also be used to seek approval and funding. (See lds.org/ callings/church-history-adviser and the resource section of this guide for a blank template and an example of a completed worksheet.) You may also consult with your contact in the Church History Department. 3 Selecting a Theme and Two or Three Key Messages Take the necessary time to plan the exhibit As your group considers possible themes and state two or three key messages that you want key messages of the exhibit, consider what you your visitors to understand after coming to the want visitors to feel, learn, and do during and exhibit. What more could we ask for? Convention 2017, a resounding success! We congratulate Tony Tidwell, an Area Vice President from Salt Lake City, who was the voters’ choice and now becomes President Elect in the new year of 2018. Tony exemplifies great devotion, willingness to serve and strength of character. We are pleased that he will be assuming leadership in the Sons of Utah Pioneers national organization. We had some good training time, including a special hour-long session for our national officers. THE TEMPLE SQUARE ORGANS The organs at Salt Lake City’s historic Temple Square represent four distinct approaches to the art of organ building, supporting a long-standing tradition of fine organ music. The Salt Lake Tabernacle organ, originally constructed by pioneer organ builder Joseph H. Ridges in the 1860s, has been rebuilt and enlarged through the years, most notably in 1948 by the Æolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston under the direction of G. Donald Harrison. Its 206 ranks, totaling 11,623 pipes, are organized into eight divisions and are played from a five-manual console. Baugh I first became acquainted with Max Parkin’s research and writings while I was a graduate student in history at Brigham Young University. As part of my coursework I read his master’s thesis, “The Nature and Cause of Internal and External Conflict of the Mormons in Ohio between 1830 and 1838” (Brigham Young University, 1966), and his doctoral dissertation, “A History of the Lat- ter-day Saints in Clay County, Missouri, from 1833 to 1837” (Brigham Young University, 1976). I considered both studies to be exceptional, but I was par- ticularly intrigued with his dissertation. In fact, my reading of three “Mis- souri” dissertations—Max’s, Warren A. Jennings “Zion is Fled: The Expul- sion of the Mormons from Jackson County, Missouri” (University of Florida, 1962), and Leland H. Gentry, “A History of the Latter-day Saints in Northern Missouri from 1836 to 1839” (Brigham Young University, 1965)—stimulated my own research interest in the Missouri period of early Mormon history (1831–1839). In the early 1990s, while researching and writing my own dissertation on the 1838 Missouri-Mormon War, as historical questions would arise, I would frequently contact Max to get his take on things.
