ARCHDES 301 | DESIGN 6| TOPIC OUTLINE | SEM 2 2019

Design 6 The Integrated: The culmination of all aspects - conceptual, formal, material, tectonic, environmental, structural - of architectural design within the context of a larger network of infrastructural services. Also requires an understanding of the full range of drawings describing the workings of the building as both an active 'machine' and place for human comfort.

The culminating design course of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies in which students are expected to demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skill in the preparation of a resolved design proposal, in response to a challenging project topic. Design proposals are required to address issues of theory, architectonics (material, structures, construction), programme (cultural, social, functional), performance (contextual, environmental) and the formative influences of these factors on space and form through the skilful, considered use of architectural media.

An Architects Journey #anarchitectsjourney

As Architects / Designers / Artists (whatever you want to call yourself) we all start the journey into architecture at different times of our lives. Some know that want to be an architect from a young age, some find it at architecture school, some find it / lose it in practice. Some would rather be an artist. Why not be both?

Architects influence Artists and moreover Artists influence Architects. The best architects have a wide understanding of art and it comes through in their work. In this paper we will be putting art before architecture and I will guide you through the journey into architecture through your eyes through the artist.

‘An Architects journey’ will take you on a voyage of self-discovery through the eyes of your selected artist and their imagined connection to their site in New Zealand.

Researching the life of an artist (dead or alive) you will be making works based on the artist’s work, analysing their style, studying the artists' life, looking at their connections to other artists, part of history, cultural influences, materiality, process, theory and exhibition curation. You will be culminating / editing / selecting series of conceptual work to inspire a house for the artist to live in with his or her family and design their studio to create their artworks in (they could be different sites).

You will need to research your own site for the artist which is appropriate for them. In must be in New Zealand.

You will be designing all the furniture for the house and also designing and making an object at 1:1 for the artist to use / display at the house.

The Artist is your client and should be your friend by the end of this paper.

The 32 artists are from NZ and International Artists.

You can select an artist from the list below:

16 New Zealand Artists

Frances Hodgkins (NZ) D (NZ) D Fiona Pardington (NZ) Simon Denny (NZ) (NZ) Dane Mitchell (NZ) Bill Hammond (NZ) Pat Hanly (NZ) D Billy Apple (NZ) Julian Daspher (NZ) D John Reynolds (NZ) (NZ) Don Driver (NZ) D Rohan Wealleans (NZ) (NZ) Robert Jahnke (NZ)

Each student must pick a different artist. There will be a list of the artists on the studio wall for you to put your name next to after the first presentation on Monday 29th July.

If you have the same artist as another student, we will work out who has the stronger connection to the artist so prepare well for your first pin up.

If you don’t like art, please don’t do this paper.

ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK This course is assessed as 100% coursework. Conversational feedback is given throughout the semester. All further information regarding assessment is available in the ARCHDES 301 Design 6 Course Outline (on Canvas).

LEARNING OUTCOMES

General Course Outcomes (in black) and Specific Topic Outcomes (the ways this studio topic will engage the general course outcomes) in red:

 Theory: Show evidence of engagement with selected / prescribed areas of architectural theory and knowledge. Further, to show evidence of the exploration of the possible influence of this upon the development of architectural propositions.

 Research the artist’s theories and communicate their ideas through your design development into the final design.

 Architectonics: Demonstrate abilities to project, explore and develop the tectonic characteristics of the project through the creative engagement with material, structural or constructional propositions.

 Demonstrate how the materials you have used in your conceptual work have influenced the design outcome of your house and studio and investigate how the considerations and restrictions of materiality have both limited and enhanced the outcome of your project.

 Programme: Show evidence of engagement with identified cultural, social and functional positions as they might inform speculative architectural propositions.

 Research the artist’s background to develop your specific brief and program as evidence of engagement with identified ecological, cultural, social and functional positions to the house and studio.

 Performance: Show abilities to advance conceptual thinking through engagement with environmental and contextual conditions that could bear upon the project, and to examine the way in which the architecture may affect those same conditions in return.  Demonstrate environmental performance and ecological connectivity between the internal and external conditions of your house and studio to the selected site or site, especially for passive solar design.

 Form and space: Demonstrate abilities to develop speculative three dimensional architectural form and space.

 Show an understanding of how the house and working studio is an appropriate scale, volume and massing.

 Media: Display skill in the communication and development of design propositions through the considered use of architectural media.

 Develop with clarity the relevant artist works into architectural solutions through any form of media, video, installation, sculpture into scaled architectural drawings, conceptual models and final models.
