The San Diego Clippers: A Dream Ends Travis Degheri With the departure of the San Diego Clippers National Basketball Associa- tion (NBA) team, San Diego’s dream of being a part of the NBA abruptly ended. The San Diego Rockets had been sold to Houston in 1971.1 When the ill-fated ABA team—The San Diego Conquistadors—failed in 1975, they were replaced with high hopes by the recently formed NBA expansion team, the Buffalo Braves, soon to become known as the San Diego Clippers.2 San Diego basketball fans once again flocked to buy tickets to see famous NBA players in action. Within six years, local residents saw their dreams end once again, this time with little understanding of what took place to lose the team to Los Angeles. Today’s Clippers originated as the Buffalo Braves in 1970 as one of three expan- sion teams entering the NBA. The others were the Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, leaving the Buffalo Braves with the need to prove themselves on the court and establish their team as a prominent franchise.3 After a disappoint- ing first few seasons, the Buffalo Braves were eventually able to take second place in the Atlantic conference by winning three of their seven playoff games.4 By the end of their 1977-78 season, however, the Buffalo Braves’ luck seemed to be wear- ing out as they finished the season in fourth place with a disappointing record of 27 wins and 55 losses.5 Despite this poor showing on the court, the NBA sent a proposal to the Buffalo Braves owner, John Y.

  • The Case of Donald Sterling
What Not To Do In A Crisis: The Case of Donald Sterling Rod Carveth Morgan State University Claire Ferraris Western Oregon University Abstract This paper reviews the events that led to owner Donald Sterling losing his National Basketball Association franchise, the Los Angeles Clippers. Employing William Benoit’s Image Restoration Discourse Theory, we argue that Sterling had at least a chance to keep his team had he handled his public relations properly. Instead, he ended up a disgraced, if somewhat financially better- off, public figure. Introduction For nearly 33 years, real estate magnate Donald Sterling and his family owned the National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise, the Los Angeles Clippers. In fact, Sterling and his wife, Shelly, were the longest-tenured owners in the NBA – that is, until April 2014. In July 2014, Judge Michael Levanas of Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled that the franchise could be sold by Shelly Sterling to former Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer for $2 billion. Given that Donald Sterling purchased the franchise in 1981 for $12.5 million, one would think he would be overjoyed at selling his team for a record price for an NBA franchise. The sale, however, was not his choice. In April 2014, Sterling was caught on audiotape making racist remarks to his young girlfriend. The tabloid news channel TMZ obtained the tape and aired it on April 25. By April 29, new NBA commissioner Adam Silver had forever banned Sterling from the NBA, fined him $2 million, and announced steps to strip him of the franchise. This paper reviews the events that led to Donald Sterling losing his franchise.

Sports Violence: A Matter of Societal Concern* I. Introduction In a recent National Hockey League (NHL) game between the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers, a fight broke out among the rival players. Without provocation, a Ranger fan reached over the protective glass and punched a Bruin player. Within a matter of seconds, several Bruin players ascended into the stands to avenge their teammate. With fists and hockey sticks flying, the confrontation between players and spectators continued for more 1 than fifteen minutes. During another NHL game, Henry Boucha, of the Minnesota North Stars, and Dave Forbes, of the Boston Bruins, had been sent to the penalty box for fighting. As Boucha skated towards his team's bench at the expiration of the penalties, he was attacked by Forbes who struck him in the face with the butt end of his hockey stick and pummeled him with his fists after he had dropped to the ice.2 Remedial surgery was required to relieve Boucha's double vision in what NHL President Clarence Campbell termed "one of the most vicious in- ' 3 cidents that he had been called to deal with.
