This children’s work edition of Journeys in the Spirit comes out monthly. It offers resources and ideas to Quakers engaging with children aged 4–12 years in a Quaker setting. It is offered with the intention of providing an opportunity for exploring, creating and learning in an atmosphere of worship in partnership on our shared journey in the spirit. Included are sections on: getting ready, for those co-ordinating the programme; gather, meeting, centering, focusing: engage, beginning to think about the theme; respond, activities linked to the theme; reflect, ending appropriately; and review, evaluating what has happened. To offer a balanced session you should aim to do something from each section. Some of the activities are included on additional sheets. Timings or ages are not stated, as this will depend on the group and how the guidance and activities are used. Underpinning each issue is the idea that there are four directions to our spiritual journey. Inwards to ourselves; outwards to others; upwards (or even further inwards?) towards the deeper mystery; downwards to the world we live in. Journeys in the Spirit offers resources and ideas to Quakers engaging with children and young people. Indianapolis First Friends Meeting embarked on this journey over three years ago. We moved from a hope and dream of a program such as this to a reality with a completed period of study when eleven of our youth were affirmed by our Meeting in June 2015. This ten-month program of study and experience was created for our young people to help them explore their spirituality, discover their identity as Quakers and to inform them of Quaker history, faith and practice. While Quakers do not confirm creeds or statements made for them at baptism, etc, we felt it important that young people be informed and af - firmed in their understanding of who they are as Friends. -

From those discussions has come a procedure for exchanging articles which might appropriately appear in each publication. This special joint issue is also a product of that cooperation. The theme, "Friends Today" seemed to fit with the editors' desire to emphasize the ways some of our people are serving the Lord In unusual ways and some of the ways our Friends bodies are working together. Stroud Published online: 2 February 2011 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011 Abstract Lope de Vega’s El robo de Dina, based upon Genesis 31-34, focuses on the disturbing series of events involving Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, and culminating in the mass slaughter of an entire enemy people who were doing their best to accommodate the demands of the Hebrews. The primary focus of this article is not the Biblical story itself, but rather the techniques that Lope used to adapt his source text for a comedia audience. From the amplification of the scope of the source text by the inclusion of the story of Laban and Jacob to the depiction of women as objects to be protected, sold, or stolen, this lesser-known play by Lope provides considerable insight into how seventeenth-century Spain viewed the Bible, the history of the Jewish people, the relationships between men and women, and even the comedia and Baroque ideals. -

Flagstaff Monthly Meeting Welcome Pamphlet
Introduction Welcome to the Flagstaff Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. We would like to acquaint you with who we are and with some of our history and beliefs. This publication introduces us, but it is only a beginning. Please feel free to ask us any questions you might have. Basic beliefs and practices of Friends When Friends are asked, “What do Quakers believe?” they may hem and haw as they search for an honest answer. Quakers have no written doctrine to which all are expected to adhere. There are, however, generally held beliefs among Quakers; a person who is unable to agree with most of them may not feel completely at home in a group of Friends. Quakerism began in the seventeenth century with George Fox. Then, as now, the Quaker faith was based on the belief that God’s will is continually and directly revealed to every person who seeks it. For this reason, Quakers are also sometimes called seekers. Although it is difficult to describe the will of God in words, Quakers refer to it as the Light, and devote their attention to minding the Light or seeking the Light. God is also said to speak to the condition of those who pay attention. ___________________________________________________ The majority of this booklet was prepared by the Fort Collins Friends Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. They have expressly waived all rights to their material, but asked that they be referenced appropriately. We have changed their section on the monthly meeting history, added a section on the Testimonies and made additions to the suggested readings. -
Paradigms of Collective Decision Making – Counsel, Majority and Consensus
For Manchester Social Movements Conference, 21-23 March 2016 by Andy Blunden The Origins of Collective Decision Making (Synopsis) Abstract: A synopsis is provided of the origin and history of the three main paradigms of collective decision making – Counsel, Majority and Consensus. From a reflection on the conditions under which each arose and the historical evolution of each tradition, the ethical foundations of each mode is brought into relief and an appropriate attitude to collective decision making is suggested which would foster creative collaboration on the Left. The question Ever since participating in the S11 protests against the World Economic Forum in Melbourne in 2000, I have been intrigued by processes of collective decision making and in particular by the antagonism between the two main paradigms used on the Left, viz., Majority and Consensus. Reading the literature arising from the Occupy Wall Street events I became alarmed at the depth of this antagonism and in particular the way the problem was being aggravated by ‘histories’ of Consensus decision making based on hearsay and ill-informed speculation, and the apparent belief that Majority decision making does not have a history at all. Everyone on the Left has some measure of familiarity with both paradigms but the overwhelming majority of activists are firmly committed to one or the other and this problem is emerging as a significant barrier to collaboration on the Left and the success of our shared project. Further, because people – not only young people, but even experienced hands – have no idea of the historical origins of these two paradigms, but simply compare and contrast them pragmatically and on the basis of personal experience, the reasons underlying this antagonism remain shrouded in mystery. -

CHI: The Motivations and Challenges of Living Simply in a Consuming Society (Under the direction of Jan Yopp, Barbara Friedman and Stephen Birdsall) Voluntary simplicity, a cultural movement that focuses on buying less and working less, blossomed in the mid-1990s as increasing numbers of Americans voiced dissatisfaction with excessive consumerism and working long hours. While the movement is not formalized today, many Americans do live simply, according to some of the simplicity literature. Practices range from buying only environmentally friendly products, following religious guidelines, or living in communal settings. Though the weakening U.S. economy makes simplicity an attractive or necessary way of life, the daily lives of simplifiers are underreported in the mainstream media. Since 2003, newspaper articles on simplicity have diminished, and existing articles lack context on the varied motivations and challenges of the simplicity movement and how some Americans live simply. This thesis and its series of articles aims to fill that gap by looking at simplicity research as well as the stories of local people in family and community settings. -
