Treasurer - Ashley De Vera Davey Groundstaff - Tony Foster, Paul Duncan Web Site & Prog Editor - Nigel Sheen WELCOME TO THE Welcome to this afternoon’s Flint v Caernarfon match, or, to use the current football parlance, the Nathan Craig ESSITY STADIUM derby !! And an especially warm welcome to the players and officials of Caernarfon, for what is yet another key fixture in our survival battle. The Cofi’s manager, Huw Griffiths, and his assistant were here on Tuesday night to witness our derby game against Connah’s Quay Nomads, and I’m sure they were both very impressed by the account we gave of ourselves. As I write this, emotions are still a bit raw about the defeat, and it seems grossly unfair that we came away with nothing from the game. We did just about everything but score, and defensively worked well to keep Nomads out, right up until the 80th minute, when we momentarily switched off from a long free kick, and they scored. But that’s football for you. We need to take the positives from our underlying performance and hopefully build on that today. I am pleased to say that today’s programme is dedicated to the anti-racism campaign in football, and in particular the Show Racism the Red Card campaign. With recent well publicised instances of players receiving racial abuse on social media following games, it is clear that, we, as a society and in football in particular, still have a long way to go on this issue. So, we must continue to hammer home the message that Racism has no place in Football and Flint Town United FC are once again delighted to dedicate one of our games to help promote this issue, and play our small part in encouraging awareness about the situation. The head of Kick It Out, a leading UK organization that works to tackle discrimination in professional and grassroots football, Sanjay Bhandari, believes racism in the sport is "worse now than it was five years ago." According to the organization, reports of discrimination rose by 32% in 2018/19 compared to the previous season, and racism by a staggering 43%. Sobering statistics indeed. So let’s all play our part to eradicate this prejudice. A new sound system has been installed in the stadium this week. We are very grateful to Stuart Electronics for carrying out this work at no cost to the club. Many thanks indeed.

Come on the Silkmen !!

The views expressed in this programme are those of the individual contributors CONGRATULATIONS! "Wishing all at Flint Town United FC the very best of luck back where you belong in Cymru Premier!"

Hannah_Blythyn 01352 762102 FROM THE CHAIRMAN I write this the day after our sickening late defeat to our near neighbours Connah Quay Nomads. Our performance was light years away from the first half hour vs Pen-y-Bont, where we really looked ring rusty. In fact we looked like a team who had never played together before, which was precisely what we were..! Pen-y-Bont are now fourth in the table and we could have got a draw out of the game. Nevertheless after Tuesday night’s performance I am confident that we can to well in the return fixture. Returning to the Nomads game, it was fantastic to see the determination and application from the players. They have clearly bought into Neil’s vision and fought like tigers, it was heart-breaking to see them at the end. You could also see the relief on Nomads face’s. We get closer to them every time.

Welcome today to Caernarfon. They have had a mixed bag of results of late and we are hopeful that our team in now showing real shape and purpose, we need a win and today would be a good time to get one. A special welcome back to Nathan Craig, a lovely lad and we wish him well.

04.03.2021 TBC AWAY Bala Town FC FROM THE MANAGER Today we welcome all players, staff and board members of Caernarfon Town to the Essity stadium for what should be an exciting game of football. After 11 weeks without a fixture for the players, today marks our third game inside seven days. The first two matches has brought us no return in terms of points but the performance against Connah’s Quay on Tuesday was certainly deserving of more than we got. I thought the players were excellent and fought extremely hard to take the league champions all the way. To concede from a set piece in the last 10 minutes was difficult for us to take and very harsh on the lads for the effort and quality they showed on the night.

We know we are in the middle of an extremely difficult run of fixtures with five of the six games up until the league split, coming against the current top four sides. Caernarfon are also a team only just outside of the top 6 on goal difference, and will no doubt have aspirations of finishing in that top half, so we know the challenge facing us today is yet another strong one. However the lads have been working extremely hard on the training pitch over the last three weeks and the signs are really positive that we are heading in the right direction with our performances. If we are able to repeat the intensity and quality of Tuesday night then we will cause Caernarfon problems today.

FLINT TOWN ARE UNITED AGAINST RACISM. TOGETHER LET’S KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL. MATCH FLINT TOWN UNITED 0 PENYBONT 1 REVIEW JD CYMRU PREMIER, 6th MARCH 2021 FLINT DRAW A BLANK ON SEASON'S RESUMPTION

In a game of limited chances, Penybont's solitary goal was enough to secure the points as Flint's new look team struggled to gel. The visitors, having benefited from their midweek competitive game, looked the more accomplished side during the first 25 minutes or so, as Flint were unable to find any sort of rhythm, and it was during this period that they struck the all important goal. Nathan Wood swept home on 12 minutes when he met Mael Davies' cut back on the half volley. Bont had already served warning when Sam Snaith was allowed a free header in the box, but it lacked sufficient power and Jon Rushton, on his Flint debut held comfortably. Shortly after the goal, Davis hit a swerving effort from range for Bont, but it was just off target. In their first incisive attack, Flint thought they had a strong shout for a penalty, when Mark Cadwallader ran into the box, and appeared to be clipped from behind, as he bore down on keeper Ashley Morris, but the referee remained unmoved by the home side's pleas. Penybont's Kostya Georgievsky had a one on one with Rushton on 20 minutes, when he received the ball from what initially looked like an offside position, but the linesman kept his flag down. The Flint stopper distinguished himself with a good blocking save to avert the danger. Rob Hughes looked Flint's most likely outlet as an attacking force, and he weaved into the box on 25 minutes, but Morris cleared his cross, as he looked to deliver the ball into the danger area. A few minutes later, Jordan Buckley almost got on the end of a through ball, but Morris was alert to the danger once more, and raced out of his area to clear the danger just ahead of the Flint striker. Hughes then tried his luck with a free kick from 22 yards out, but his effort could only find the roof of the net. In the second half, Bont successfully closed the game down, and chances for both sides were few and far between. The final ball was all too often lacking in quality from the Silkmen, when they did manage to penetrate the final third, and Morris remained largely untroubled. Hughes embarked on one of his trademark mazy runs just after the hour mark, and worked his way into the box, before slipping the ball towards Cadwallader, but Morris just beat him to it, and once again snuffed out any potential danger. And that's about as good as it got for Flint in the second half, as Bont's game management frustrated the Silkmen. So it was a disappointing return to action after the long lay off, but perhaps not entirely surprising given the limited training and the presence of so many new faces. MEET THE MANAGER …. HUW GRIFFITHS Huw joined Caernarfon in January last year, following a very successful spell as manager of Cefn Druids, and for whom he was named Welsh Premier League manager of the season in 2018 after leading the Ancients into the Europa League. He has recently extended his contract with the Canaries which will take him to the end of season 2022/23. Commenting on the new contact, Griffiths had this to say “I’m absolutely delighted to have, this afternoon, agreed a contract with Caernarfon Town Football Club, I have known for many years how very special the Caernarfon fans are, and since my very first contact with the Chairman and members of the Board in February 2020, I realised there were some very special people running the club too. “They have a clear vision for the future of this Club and I’m extremely proud and honoured to be a part of their vision. There is a lot of hard work and many challenges in front of us all now, during this transition period for the Club – I can’t wait to get going once again! “One word about my feelings about the contract and challenge ahead – ‘superb’!”

PROFILING …. DARREN THOMAS A diminutive, pacey and skilful winger, local boy Darren joned the Cofis in the 2012/13 season and, apart from a four month sojourn in the Welsh Premier with Aberystwyth Town, he has been a major factor in Town’s climb up the leagues. Darren has also played for Llangefni and Porthmadog, scoring two Welsh Premier hat-tricks for the Anglesey club and quickly collecting 13 goals from 31 Welsh Premier appearances. Darren scored his 100th goal for the club during the Championship winning season of 2017/18 and is adored by the Oval faithful, who refer to him as the Cofi Messi.

Darren was the Cofi’s Player of the Year on their return to the Cymru Premier and enjoyed a scintillating second campaign in the top tier, winning the League's Goal of the Season for an excellent strike against Ammanford in the Welsh Cup. SELECTED PEN PICS ….

Josh Tibbetts (Goalkeeper) - Josh (pictured left) joined during the Summer of 2020 after an excellent season with Bala Town in the Cymru Premier League. He lives in Wolverhampton and has previously played for Birmingham, Peterborough, Royston Town and Southport.

Joe Williams (Defender) - Joe is Caernafon’s vice-captain for the 2020-21 season. The experienced and talented right-back signed for the Canaries from Llandudno in 2016 as one of Iwan Williams' first signing at the club. The St Asaph born defender has also played for Glan Conwy in the Welsh Alliance League.

Gareth Edwards (Defender) - Gareth (pictured right) signed for Town from Cefn Druids in August 2014 where he was captain. Tall and imposing central defender who has proved to be an invaluable addition to the defence. Has also played in the Huws Gray Alliance for Buckley Town. He has strong leadership qualities and has become a mainstay of the side for the past six years.

Noah Edwards (Midfield) - Noah signed from Connahs Quay Nomads at the start of the 2018/19 season and has established himself as an integral part of the squad. The twenty four year old midfielder has become a firm favourite with the Cofi Army, having endeared himself with his application and commitment to the cause. Nah loves a tackle and can always be relied upon to find the net throughout the season.

Cai Jones (Forward) - Having featured for Caernarfon Town under Lee Dixon during the treble winning season of 2012/13, Cai moved on to Porthmadog, where he performed at a constantly high level for five seasons. The striker impressed Town manager Sean Eardley so much during matches between the Cofis and Port that he made it a priority of his to bring Cai back to the club for a stab at the Welsh Premier League. Cai enjoyed eighteen months with us in the top tier before returning to Porthmadog in January 2020. However, Huw Griffiths made the return of Cai one of his first moves in the transfer market in the Summer of 2020.

Danny Brookwell (Forward/Winger) - Locally Danny (pictured left) has played for Menai Bridge and has also represented the Royal Navy at under 19 and under 23 level. He has twice represented the Service at the Dallas Cup in Texas and in 2012 was nominated for the Royal Navy's Young Sports Person of the Year award. Iwan Williams signed Danny from Glantraeth in September 2015 and the pacey, hard working winger with an eye for goal has become a firm favourite with the Cofi Army. He has represented Ynys Mon in the Island Games in 2017 and represented Wales in the ‘C’ International against England in 2019. As a club we are proud to work with Show Racism the Red Card (Srtrc) Wales, and have previously hosted workshops with youngsters in our Social Club. Here’s the story of how the organisation came about …

Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity. It was established in January 1996, thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. In 1990s Newcastle, Shaka was at a petrol station near St James Park when he was confronted with a group of young people shouting racist abuse at him. After one of the group realised that they had been shouting at Shaka Hislop, the Newcastle United football player, they came over to ask for an autograph. It was from this experience that Shaka realised he could harness his status as a professional player to make a difference. Coupled with the power of football and his status as a role model, Shaka thought education could be an effective strategy in challenging racism in society. At the charity’s first ever event, Shaka and fellow teammate John Beresford visited Gosforth High School in the North East to speak to pupils about his experiences in football and society and the rest is history! To this day SRtRC continues to utilise the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society and has also expanded into other sports. The majority of the campaign’s work involves the delivery of educational workshops to young people and adults in schools, workplaces and at events held in football stadiums. Across the UK, SRtRC provides educational sessions to more than 50,000 individuals per year. In addition to the direct education of young people and adults, SRtRC produces educational resources, to challenge misconceptions, stereotypes and negative attitudes in society. Our educational films feature a range of professional football players such as , Dele Ali, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, , Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, Eni Aluko alongside England and Wales managers, and Ryan Giggs respectively. The films address a range of issues surrounding racism and help teachers and other training professionals to deliver training in their schools and workplaces. Each of our films is accompanied by an education pack, which contains lesson plans and activities for all ages. Show Racism the Red Card works extensively across the UK and has offices in North East England, East England (also covering South East England and London), Scotland (Glasgow) and Wales (Cardiff). In Scotland and Wales, the campaign also plays a role in tackling racism within professional and grass-roots football. Mission Statement Show Racism The Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity. We aim to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others. Show Racism The Red Card acknowledges that racism changes, as do the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in the UK. Our message and activities therefore need to be able to respond to such changes as and when appropriate. We achieve this through: Producing educational resources Developing activities to encourage people, including young people, to challenge racism In parts of the UK, challenging racism in the game of football and other sports.

10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CAERNARFON TOWN

● THE first football club in Caernarfon, known as Caernarvon Athletic, was formed in September 1876 ● On 30th October 1886 Caernarfon were the 1st team from NW Wales to enter the English FA Cup and lost 10-1 away to Stoke City. ● In 1894, several former players began a new team called Caernarvon Ironopolis. That club competed in the North Wales Coast League, winning the championship on two occasions and reaching the semi-final of the Welsh Cup in 1900 and again in 1902. Unfortunately, following a dispute with the league, Ironopolis folded in 1903. ● In 1906, Carnarvon United was formed and in 1909 the new club won both the Welsh and North Wales Amateur Cups ● This club was superceded by Caernarvon Athletic (reverting back to the original name) and boasted a full time manager and fully professional squad. In 1930, however, the club went into liquidation ● In 1937, a group of local soccer enthusiasts began Caernarfon Town F.C. and entered a team in the Welsh League (North) Division One, beginning a 39 year period of unbroken membership of the league. ● They were then granted permission to enter the English league system, and were founder members of the North West Counties League ● In 1985, Caernarfon Town were runners-up in the first division and were elected to the Northern Premier League. Despite a poor start, new manager John King turned playing affairs round, culminating with a run to the 3rd round of the FA Cup the following season, where they lost to Second Division side Barnsley 1-0 in a replay. ● In 1989–90, Caernarfon were relegated to the NPL's first division and, following a series of mediocre performances over a five-year period, the club's board of directors decided to return to Welsh football. ● In 2008/09 the club were relegated from the top flight, and despite winning the Cymru Alliance in 2015/16 were refused promotion having failed to achieve the Domestic Licence. However, the following season they duly finished champions once more, and this time returned to the top division. Show Racism the Red Card - Educational Workshops SRtRC Wales host special workshops in schools and other establishments to deliver the anti racism message. We look forward to welcoming them to our facilities in the future as we hope to host more events once the current Covid restrictions have been eased. Here’s an insight into what they deliver . More information can be found by visiting https://www.theredcard.org/school-workshops

SRtRC have a team of educators and ex-professional football players who can visit a school or other premises for a whole day educating young people from year 5 up to year 13 against racism. Workshop Aims ● To educate young people about the causes and consequences of racism and to explore the various forms racism can take. ● To empower young people to challenge racism in the communities in which they live, providing them with relevant knowledge and information to enable them to do this. ● To help young people prepare to play an active role as citizens in an increasingly multi-cultural society. ● To enable young people to develop good relationships and respect the differences between people, regardless of their ethnicity, faith, culture or nationality. Structure Our educational film and guidance are sent to the school ahead of the visit to allow students to undertake preparatory activities. Schools also return a pro-forma to highlight any particular issues that they wish to be covered. Our workshops are fully participatory and interactive. Students take part in a range of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities designed to build empathy and understanding and to encourage discussion and critical thinking. Participants work independently and in groups to fully explore the issues. Initial workshops provide an introduction to the subject of racism. Workshops focus on the following: Anti-Muslim hatred, anti-Immigrant sentiment, racism toward Black and other minority groups and anti-gypsyism. Please note that our workshops are suitable for both primary, secondary and special needs provision and content is tailored accordingly. .‘Football and Fitness’ sessions can also be delivered alongside the classroom workshops by ex-professional footballers. The sessions take place in mixed groups with an emphasis on teamwork and supporting each other. Young people wear Show Racism the Red Card bibs and prizes are given out for enthusiasm and participation. We have found that the football sessions and presence of ex-professional footballers increases the enjoyment and participation of the young people and their engagement with the anti-racism message. Copies of our educational films and resources are provided to the school to allow teachers to continue working around the theme of combating racism and racist bullying. The education pack contains 21 pages of activities and discussion points proven to stimulate debate and promote understanding, complete with learning outcomes, age group suitability and curriculum links. By the end of our workshops young people will have: ● A better understanding of what racism is and how it impacts on individuals (targets & perpetrators) and society ● An increased awareness of the responsibility to challenge racism & how this can be done ● An increased awareness of critical thinking and its usefulness in challenging stereotypes and recognising media bias ● More knowledge about appropriate/inappropriate terminology relating to ethnicity

MATCH FLINT TOWN UNITED 0 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS 1 JD CYMRU PREMIER, 9th MARCH 2021 REVIEW FLINT SUFFER AGONISING DERBY DEFEAT

A closely fought Deeside derby with no quarter given by either side ended with a gut wrenching defeat for the Silkmen Spurned first half chances were to prove costly as a Michael Wilde header with 10 minutes remaining saw the reigning champions edge victory. Flint were a side transformed from the somewhat lethargic outfit that struggled on Saturday, benefiting from having a competitive game under their belts, and manager Neil Gibson must have been delighted with the effort and workrate from his side. They started with a lot of verve and energy, and carved out a couple of excellent chances in the opening ten minutes. Callum Bratley forced Oliver Byrne into a good stop with just two minutes on the clock, and as the ball bounced off the keeper, it somehow eluded Jordan Buckley who couldn’t apply the finishing touch. Then, a lovely lay off from Josh Amis, making his first start for Flint, played in Bratley once more, and this time Byrne had to tip the shot over the bar to once again deny the Flint striker. Nomads created their first chance on 14 minutes, when Danny Davies unleashed a shot from just outside of the box. This time it was home keeper Jon Rushton's turn to push the ball over the bar. Good battling work by Buckley earned his side a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box after 20 minutes. A Rob Hughes shot once again had Byrne at full stretch, and again he was unable to hold onto the ball, but no-one in a black and white shirt was on hand to pounce on the loose ball, and it was smuggled out for a corner. From the resulting delivery, the ball was cleared to Buckley, who found himself in an inviting position, and his curled effort was just too high for the far corner. Flint's play was disrupted somewhat for the remainder of the half, when they seemed to fall foul of the referee, and were left increasingly bemused by some strange decisions. At half time the game remained goalless, although the Silkmen, had they been a bit more accomplished in front of goal, should have been at least a goal to the good. The second half developed into a tough attritional battle, but was thoroughly absorbing. Nomads were putting pressure on the Flint defence with long throws and balls into the box, whenever the opportunity presented itself, but the Silkmen's backline were generally coping extremely well. That was, right up unto the 80th minute, when a long free kick from inside his own half by keeper Byrne was played into the Flint box, and Wilde, not for the first time in his career, got on the end of it, and back headed it into the corner of the net, eluding Rushton along the way. The reaction and elation from the Nomads bench , told its own story, as Flint's dogged defensive line was finally breached. With the game in stoppage time, the Silkmen almost carved out an equaliser, when Conor Harwood combined well with Ben Maher, and Maher raced in on goal from the right, but Byrne parried his shot, and as the ball looped over him and spun towards the goal line, a desperate clearance stopped it from crossing. Then a follow up shot was deflected over for a corner, as Flint were once again denied. As ever, small margins in such games make big differences, and perhaps a lack of anticipation at vital times in front of goal, cost the Silkmen the chance of a point. But to have pushed the champions so hard gives real encouragement that there is a lot more to come from this side over the rest of the season, and we will not be giving up our premier league status lightly.
