This year they assumed the role of OPFOR – The “Opposing Force” what the CO describes as ‘a once in a lifetime opportunity for the lads to conduct excellent training, in a ‘different’ role, as a free thinking aggressive enemy designed to test the battle groups to their limit – and fight to win’. 1 MERCIAN also have recently conducted Public Duties this was headed up by Major Andy Ryan (OC C Company); the regiment views this as a privilege and unique opportunity to share some of our unique traditions and excellent bearing and discipline with the household division and the London tourist crowd. 2 MERCIAN. 2 MERCIAN have deployed two Companies (Coy) and a small HQ to Northern Iraq on Op SHADER for 6 months. Based in Erbil, B (Malta) Coy will deliver infantry training to the Kurdish security forces, and based out of Taji and Besmaya, C (Kohima) Coy will deliver Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED), engineer and medical training to the Iraqi Security Forces. In July, A (Grenadier) Coy deployed for 6 months, under the command of 32 Engineer Regiment, to South Sudan as part of the United Nations mission there. Their task will mainly involve force protection, but they will also assist the engineers with construction activity. Fire Support (Dragon) Coy will deploy to the Falklands from Aug to Nov 17, to be the Roulement Infantry Company. Everyone will be back in Chester by the end of January 2018, and will then focus on training up for a Battlegroup exercise in Kenya in May and June 2018, before then preparing for the Arms Plot to Episkopi, Cyprus, over the summer. The arms plot to Cyprus is a unique opportunity that has come about as a result of the MERCIAN regiment now being part of the Kings Division alongside the Lancashire Regiment and Yorkshire Regiment. 2 MERCIAN will be conducting a home coming parade towards the end of February 2018, to celebrate the Regiment's 10th birthday, as well as bid a fond farewell to Chester as they prepare to move to Cyprus. 4 MERCIAN. The past 12 months have seen 4 MERCIAN engaged in a full and challenging calendar filled with operational deployments, training events, adventurous training (AT) and battlefields studies. The opportunity to deploy was welcomed with enthusiasm; as such soldiers deployed on Op TOSCA (Cyprus) on a dynamic UN Peacekeeping Mission and have also deployed on Short Term Training Teams (STTT) to Uganda through January – March. Later on in the year 4 MERCIAN will deploy soldiers on OP SHADER (Iraq) with 2 MERCIAN. 4 MERCIAN has recently completed its annual overseas training exercise (OTX) to Spain, working alongside the 45th Garellano Spanish Regiment testing the Reservists abilities in both rural and urban operations.
