Showcase of Emerging Local Cricket Talent

Sunday, 16th September 2018 – Karuah Park, Turramurra

Captains – Sidhant Singh (East) and Riley Mackay (West)

2018-19 Coaches’ Association The Coaches’ Association (HKHDCCA) is a leading not-for-profit cricket coaching organisation responsible for recruiting and accrediting young coaches from within HK&HDCA and north-western Sydney; and conducting cricket clinics during the school holidays and development programs in the off-season. HKHDCCA designs and implements coaching programs aimed at increasing the cricket participation, skills and enjoyment of boys and girls aged 5 – 15, including beginners, club players, rep. standard players, and children with special needs. HKHDCCA aims to continue to expand its subsidised (or free) coaching programs to a wider cross-section of the community, many of whom have encountered barriers or lack of opportunities to participate in cricket, including disadvantaged groups, children from non-English speaking communities, and children with special needs. The successful implementation of these challenging initiatives should assist in facilitating sporting, cultural and social inclusion for these communities, while also promoting healthy, active lifestyles and increasing the participation rate in cricket in NSW. Responsibilities include: • raising the profile of coaching and giving coaches a collective ‘voice’ within the Association; • promoting the objective that all club and representative coaches attain the Cricket Australia Community (Level 1) accreditation as a minimum (preferably Level 2 for representative Shield team coaches); • conducting an annual Community (Level 1) accredited coaching course for HK&HDCA and NDCC members. • organising cricket clinics at Waitara, West Pennant Hills, Dundas and/or Normanhurst, in partnership with Northern District CC, during the September / October and January school holidays for players aged 6 – 14; • conducting annual off-season Rising Stars Coaching Program(s) for players aged U/9 – U/15 of all standards, including a junior development program designed to fast-track their transition from soft to hard ball cricket; • representing the Coaches’ Association on all cricket coaching matters at the HK&HDCA Council and Executive Meetings (the President of the Coaches’ Association is a delegate on the HK&HDCA Executive Committee); • providing active Coaches’ Association members with professional coaching opportunities at our junior cricket clinics and our off-season junior development programs; • co-ordinating the annual U/15 Ross Turner Cup (RTC) and U/13 Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) ‘showcase’ intra-Association representative fixtures, including the preliminary GHC T20 matches, in September each year; • identifying potential outstanding young coaches and providing GHC coaching roles and other opportunities; • recognising excellence in cricket coaching at club, representative or Coaches’ Association levels through our HKHDCCA Coach of Year award (Bruce Wood Cup); • arranging a HKHDCCA / NDCC overseas rep. cricket tour (U/15 age group) every two years (since 2015); • providing financial assistance to a limited number of HKHDCCA candidates nominated to attend a Cricket NSW accredited coaching course (Levels 2 or 3), as Community (Level 1) courses are now free; • increasing the participation of girls in cricket, in consultation with Cricket NSW and the HK&HDCA Girls Cricket Co-ordinator, through targeted coaching programs and liaison with schools and clubs; • conducting a free Beginners session, teaching cricket fundamentals to 'first time' players each year; • assisting clubs by running some coaching sessions and demonstrating coaching drills to new club coaches, and providing a mentor service to coaches as required, especially new or young coaches seeking guidance; • holding two free annual clinics each year for Blowfly cricketers (children with special needs) in January and September / October, plus ad-hoc coaching on Saturdays, depending on the availability of coaches; • enhancing the development of accredited coaches and facilitating a future pathway for club and rep. coaches; • arranging Insurance for HKHDCCA and the annual incorporated association return to NSW Fair Trading; • seeking corporate sponsorship and Government Grant opportunities to provide additional funding to expand and further subsidise our coaching programs, and purchase additional equipment as required; • ensuring that all coaches aged 18 and have a current Working with Children Check 5-year clearance; • promoting our activities and coaching programs via the HK&HDCA website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn); • aiming to provide cricket coaching for community groups from non-English speaking backgrounds who have encountered barriers or lack of opportunities to participate in cricket in Sydney. Bruce Wood has performed the role of President of the Coaches’ Association since 2010-11 and is supported by Daniel Wood (Vice-President), Josh Miller (Secretary), Rod Hokin (Head Coach), and Nick Miller (Treasurer). The Coaches’ Association has five distinguished Patrons – Ross Turner, Tom Richmond OAM, Matt Kean MP, Mark Rushton and Denise Anderson (Annetts).

What is the Glenn Hourigan Cup?

The Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) contest began in 2003-04 following the great success of the annual Ross Turner Cup (RTC) fixture, which was inaugurated in 1998-99 to promote an opportunity for our best junior players to appear in a ‘showcase’ game of high level representative cricket. The idea developed from the work of the Northern Metropolitan Cricket Council (NMCC) in the 1990’s, which brought together representatives of grade, shires, district and school local cricket organisations to achieve mutual benefit by working in close collaboration. The GHC was initially an U/12 contest but was changed to U/13 and below in 2011. The RTC and GHC matches were the brainchild of Tom Richmond OAM, Patron and Life Member of HK&HDCA, who passed the responsibility after 12 years of sterling service to Bruce Wood, President Coaches’ Association (HKHDCCA) in 2010-11, who has maintained the fine tradition and also introduced some new initiatives, including the GHC T20s and the appointment of young coaches. The NMCC also recognised that cricket needs to be played in the true spirit of the game and enjoyed by all participants, in a competitive and healthy environment. The Council took proactive steps in conjunction with the local cricket bodies to achieve this objective. Since the origins of the RTC and GHC matches, emphasis has always been placed on respect for the opposition, the umpires and the laws of the game, ie. the spirit of cricket, which is now incorporated in the preamble to the MCC Laws of Cricket by the world’s governing body. The current RTC / GHC Convenor, Bruce Wood, also holds similar views on how cricket should be played and he donated an impressive perpetual trophy in 2008-09 on behalf of the Umpires’ Association entitled ‘HKHDCUA Spirit of Cricket Award for representative cricket’ in order to promote excellent sportsmanship by our cricketers. One of the objectives was to accelerate the ‘career paths’ of our outstanding young cricketers by the earlier identification of players with talent and commitment, in order to provide high level coaching and development opportunities for these players. It was hoped that many of these players would successfully progress through the HK&HDCA Shield junior representative teams; play AW Green Shield and Grade Cricket with Northern District CC; or A Grade within the HK&HDCA Senior Competition. It is important that HK&HDCA maintains close ties with its local grade club, Northern District CC at Waitara, as our Association provides a pathway for talented players to progress through to Green Shield and Grade cricket. NDCC officials have regularly attended RTC and/or GHC matches since their inception on talent scouting missions. The Coaches’ Association’s U/15 overseas tours to Sri Lanka in 2015 and West Indies / USA in 2017, and its popular junior cricket clinics at Mark Taylor Oval in the school holidays, are all undertaken in conjunction with Northern District CC. The Coaches’ Association’s Secretary, Josh Miller, has been the NDCC Green Shield Head Coach since 2017-18, and he replaced Rod Hokin, which continues HKHDCCA’s strong link with our local grade club, Northern District CC. The Coaches’ Association and Northern District CC will be embarking on an exciting U/15 cricket tour to India in April 2019 and the side is expected to contain a number of ND’s Green Shield or Development Squad players. Today’s GHC (50 over) match brings together the leading U/13 and U/12 players in the district in teams which roughly represent the eastern and western halves of the Association. The teams have been selected on the basis of performances throughout the previous season, mainly in representative cricket, but also the HK&HDCA junior club competition, as well as the recent GHC T20 matches at Montview. Thanks also to our sponsors, Kookaburra Sport (Cameron Eve) for supplying the match balls and prizes. I’m sure all the players and spectators will thoroughly enjoy today’s 16th GHC contest. Glenn Hourigan (HK&HDCA Life Member)

Glenn Hourigan was the Association’s Representative Secretary from 1988 to 2001. During that period HK&HDCA won the U/19 Durham Shield twice, the Martin Shield, the U/15 Weblin Shield and the Girls’ U/14 representative competition. Glenn’s connection with the Association began when his son was playing, but continued long afterwards. His contribution to rep. cricket within our Association was enormous, covering our participation in all NSWDCA Shield competitions. He also championed the entry of “development” teams in the IDCA competitions (now known as the President’s Cup). Glenn used to be involved in numerous coaching initiatives, including the significant Northern Cricket programs that led the way many years ago. He contributed massively to organising competent coaching and management of our inter-district representative teams. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the girls’ cricket competitions that were emerging at the time. Glenn has always been concerned about the need for all players to be given the maximum of opportunity and a “fair go”, both in representative selection trials and in matches. He holds the view that if we can do this for the young players, the rest is up to them. He always had a soft spot for the “battler” and encouraged cricket development at all levels of ability. Glenn is a person who speaks his mind and who gives credit where it is due. He has been a constant voice demanding the development of young players as a means of securing the future of this great game of ours. He sees cricket as part of the Australian way of life and a basic right in this country for all young people. No-one has ever taken greater pride in our Association or worked harder for its representative teams than Glenn, who was inducted as HK&HDCA’s 38th Life Member in 1997. Glenn continues to take a keen interest in cricket and in particular, this annual GHC match, and we are delighted that he and his wife Margaret can attend today’s GHC match at Karuah Park.

Umpires for today’s Glenn Hourigan Cup match

Alf James OAM and Jason Fletcher have been appointed to officiate today’s GHC match.

Alf is a Life Member of HK&HDCA and the NSWDCA, and was President of our Association for 22 years (1980 – 2002). He holds the distinction of being the only player in HK&HDCA history to score over 10,000 runs and take in excess of 1,000 in the local Senior Competition. In 2013-14, he completed his Jubilee season, an incredible 50 consecutive years playing in the HK&HDCA Senior Competition. The HK&HDCA C3 Grade’s premiership perpetual trophy is named in his honour. Alf represents NSW in the Over 70s cricket team that competes in the national championships. Alf has umpired a total of 134 matches for HK&HDCA, including the past eight GHC matches since 2011-12.

Jason is a relatively new umpire, having officiated in 54 matches for HK&HDCA. He is currently the Assistant Secretary on the Executive Committee of the Umpires’ Association (HKHDCUA). Jason enjoyed playing cricket for many years and is pleased to be putting back into the game that he loves. He understands the game well and adopts a practical approach to his umpiring. This is Jason’s first GHC match and he is thoroughly looking forward to it.
