I just like to thank all the people that supported Soft Ireland Coffee Morning. Business in the town of Youghal that gave us prizes for the raffle the La Bella Roma for hosting it. We make 1500 euro for the coffee morning which will be donated to S.O.F.T. Ireland. Our daughter Leah was born on the 25th of September 2005 she was born with Edwards Syndrome. She lived for 6 weeks until the 5th of November. We took her home from the Bonns hospital on the Friday and she died on the Saturday night. Soft Ireland was founded in 1991. Its a Voluntary group dedicat- ed to providing support for families for children born with the La Bella Roma Proprietors Josef and Tommy with Fiona Hennessy, Loreen Chromosomal Disorders Edwards Syndrome and Patau's Sweeney and Ann..... Syndrome. SOFT puts families in touch with other family who have lost children and who have newly diagnosed babies and fam- ily that are caring for babies with these disorders and families experiencing bereavement. SOFT meet twice a year for a week- end where all the familys meet and talk and remember their chil- dren. SOFT has helped us get through the difficult times. The incidence of Patau Syndrome which is trisomy 13 is about 1 in 5,000 of total births while that of trisomy 18 which is Edwards is about 1 in 2,500 of total births. There are more girls born then boys. It is extremely rare to have a second baby with the same dis- order. So here are some of the things the FSA wants to warn against: SPICED BEEF - Don't cook the stuffing inside the turkey. This can prevent either from cooking through properly, so they should be NOW! cooked separately instead. - Do not wash the turkey before cooking: this can spread bacteria around the kitchen and lead to cross-contamination. Correct cooking will kill all bacteria. - Ideally a frozen turkey should be defrosted in the fridge. Two thirds of people defrost at room temperature but again this can cause problems. - Cook your turkey for 18 to 20 minutes per pound in weight. An undercooked turkey can result in food poisining.

Christmas dinner is the biggest meal many of us will cook. We're often preparing meals that we wouldn't normally make - and we frequently buy more food than we can store in the fridge. The FSA’s head of microbiology says, "The ad campaign encourages people to think about how to prepare, cook and eat safely, most food poisoning incidents are easily avoided and with a little bit of extra thought everybody can enjoy the festive season." One of the problems is catering for higher numbers, the average Christmas cook will be serving dinner for at least seven people. And we all seem to be guilty of buying a big- ger turkey than necessary, the average weight of the Christmas bird is 12 pounds and that's enough to feed up to 18 people, but however big it is, you should use up all left- overs within 48 hours. But the agency's advice is simple: plan a realistic amount of food, store raw meat in the bottom of your fridge, wash utensils used on raw meat and make sure the bird is fully thawed and cooked thoroughly to ensure you stay healthy this Christmas. At different stages over the past five years all three natives have returned to work and live in Youghal. Andrea Cashell (Ceramic Artist) Martha Cashman (Sculptor) Diane Magee (Painter) On finishing her degree in 2000, Andrea was awarded the N.C.E.A. Purchase Prize. Her Public Commissions include an installation in the National College of Ireland, The I.F.S.C. Dublin and The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal. She is currently working on a series of slab built sculptures based on plant forms. She uses soft slabs of clay to allow each piece assume it's natural form during the drying process, giving each a unique quality. The hard edges of the cubed forms con- trast with the soft unfurling petals inside. She uses white stone clay and fires her pieces to 1000 degrees. This body of work is currently selling in various galleries throughout Ireland. Martha recently received the Essence of Ireland Award presented to her by President Mary Mc Aleese. She has exhibited extensively both in Ireland and abroad. Her work can be seen as part of the permanent art collection in U.C.C. Martha works with mixed media such as porcelain, paper clay wire and carved wood. Her collection includes a series of non functional sculptural tools such as spoons, ladles, stirrers, spreaders, spades forks and shovels. Martha says 'These forms evoke memories of my rural upbringing and pay homage to the elders of my past'. Having studied, worked and lived in Limerick for 13 years, it's comes as no surprise then that Diane's first solo show was in Limerick in 2007, it sold out on the night of the opening. This lead directly to a series of commissioned pieces for a Limerick based art collector. Her second solo show, also in Limerick in 2009, again sold out. A con- temporary realist in style, her work explores and records the land- scape and views which surround her daily; she works in oil on canvas. To date, Diane's work is mainly commission lead and is part of pub- lic and private collections in Ireland, Switzerland, the U.K, and the U.S.A. All three artists are delighted to be showing their work togeth- er in their home town of Youghal. The exhibition will be open to the public on Tuesday November 24th and will run until Christmas. CHRISTMAS - TIPS TO REDUCE THE STRESS Christmas is typically one of the most stressful events of the year. The expense of buying gifts, the pressure of last minute shopping and the heightened expectations of family togetherness can all combine to undermine our best intentions. Some practical sugges- tions can help you reduce your 'Christmas stress'. Budgeting for Christmas For many of us, the Christmas aftermath includes massive credit card bills that can take months to clear. Christmas doesn't have to be a financial headache if you plan ahead. Stress reduction strate- gies include: As early as you can in the New Year, work out a rough budget of expected Christmas costs. Don't forget 'hidden' expenses such as food bills and overseas telephone charges. Calculate how much disposable income you have between now and Christmas. A certain percentage of this can be dedicated each week (or fortnight or month) to covering your expected Christmas costs. Don't be discouraged if the amount seems small. If you save $5.00, $10.00 or $20.00 per week over a year, it can provide you with a hefty nest egg. If your nest egg isn't enough to cover your estimated expenses, perhaps you may need to refigure your Christmas budget to a more realistic amount. If you have trouble keeping your hands off your Christmas nest egg, consider opening a 'Christmas Club' account. Presents If you have a large circle of extended family or friends to buy gifts for, it can be very costly. You might be able to reduce the stress and cost of Christmas for everyone if you suggest a change in the way your family and friends give presents. For example, you could suggest that your group: Buy presents only for the children. Have a Kris Kringle, where everyone draws a name out of a hat and buys a present only for that person.
