To my parents, and family-thanks, as always, for being an inspiration. ___ INTRODUCTION ___ If black America can be said to have its modern Renaissance man, ). Saunders Redding clearly deserved that distinction. Though he wrote no drama or poetry, his work as novelist, essayist, biographer, historian, and critic was filled with both. One might say of him, as Dryden said of Shakespeare, that "when he describes anything, you more than see it, you feel it too." A Shakespearean scholar himself, Redding was, however, best known as one of the first great scholars of Afro-American literature. He resisted the term "black scholar," in the conviction that humanists should not be defined by a color line. His own study of literature, far from being confined to race, covered instead a wide literary map in which national literatures, events, and authors do not exist in isolation. In prac­ tice, this means that as a critic he judged the poetry of Phillis Wheatley with an awareness of Alexander Pope, the novels of William Wells Brown with a knowledge of Charles Brockden Brown, and the speeches of Frederick Douglass with a recognition of William Lloyd Garrison. Redding traced the importance ofliterary development among a host of Afro-American writers in that same way, from the earliest known works of jupiter Hammon in the eighteenth century to those of contemporary authors in the twentieth. As social historian he examined American culture across racial and national boundaries, knowing that its meaning is most likely to be found in influences and confluences, both black and white, past and present. His writings probed the influence of the spirituals and blues on American culture, the relationship of Afro-American history to Afro-American liter­ ature, and the frequent exploitation and misrepresentation of racial mate­ rial by Euro-American artists and writers. His conception of Afro-American culture was, above all else, an affirmation of its link to the American experience. Hence, his unyielding belief that it must be studied and assessed in that context. Because the ways in which black writers treat race in their literature changes over time, these writers’ evocations of Wheatley respond accordingly. Wheatley falls in and out of favor over the course of African American literary history, but she remains a recurring figure in the nearly 250-year history of the tradition. Although portrayals of Wheatley evolve over time, various forms of longing inform all representations of the poet.

    8 cartographic perspectives Number 61, Fall 2008 “The Map Shows Me Where It Is You Are”: Gloria Oden Responds to Elizabeth Bishop Across National Geographic and Rand McNally World Maps Adele J. Haft African-American poet Gloria Oden was among those inspired by Department of Classical Elizabeth Bishop’s seminal poem “The Map” (1934). In honor of Bishop, Oden wrote two poems about reading maps: “A Private Letter to Bra- and Oriental Studies zil” (1957) and “The Map” (ca. 1961). Like May Swenson’s “The Cloud- Hunter College Mobile,” Oden’s poems overtly pay homage to Bishop. Like Howard The City Univ. of New York Nemerov’s “The Mapmaker on His Art” and Mark Strand’s “The Map,” 695 Park Avenue Oden’s verses reveal that she shares in Bishop’s understanding of the New York, NY 10065 mapmaker’s art: its imaginative power and limitations, its technical achievement and arbitrary nature. Yet Oden’s two poems are far more [email protected] politically and historically nuanced than Bishop’s “The Map”—or than any of the other map poems written shortly after Bishop won the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for her collection opening with “The Map” (Poems: North & South—A Cold Spring). Furthermore, unlike her peers, Oden found inspiration in Bishop’s poem and in an identifiable contemporary map. By comparing both of her poems to Bishop’s original as well as uncover- ing, with the help of Oden’s own words, the identity of her maps, this paper will demonstrate how Oden’s penetrating critique of two popular 1950s wall maps helped her connect not only with Bishop but also with the world she found reflected in, or absent from, the map.
