ENGLISH EXTENSION I Crime Genre Essay: “Genre sets a framework of conventions. How useful is it to understand texts in terms of genre? Are texts more engaging when they conform to the conventions, or when they challenge and play with conventions?” “Genres offer an important way of framing texts which assists comprehension. Genre knowledge orientates competent readers of the genre towards appropriate attitudes, assumptions and expectations about a text which are useful in making sense of it. Indeed, one way of defining genre is as a ‘set of expectations.’” (Neale, 1980) The crime fiction genre, which began during the Victorian Era, has adapted over time to fit societal expectations, changing as manner of engaging an audience. Victorian text The Manor House Mystery by J.S. Fletcher may be classified as an archetypal crime fiction text, conforming to conventions whilst The Skull beneath the Skin by P.D. James, The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard and Capote directed by Bennet Miller challenge and subvert conventions. The altering of conventions is an engaging element of modern crime fiction, and has somewhat, become a convention itself. Genre, Roland Barthes argues, is “a set of constitutive conventions and codes, altering from age to age, but shared by a kind of implicit contract between writer and reader” thus meaning it is “ultimately an abstract conception rather than something that exists empirically in the world.”(Jane Feuer, 1992) The classification of literary works is shaped – and shapes – culture, attitude and societal influence. The crime fiction genre evolved following the Industrial Revolution when anxiety grew within the expanding cities about the frequency of criminal activity. -

Disregarding this type of fiction because it is seen as low-quality does not take into account its value to readers. Reading has been established as a means of improving mental health and well-being – often known as bibliotherapy. This often focuses on fiction considered to have literary merit rather than genre fiction like crime. However, in framing therapeutic reading in this way, the impact of texts considered to have low cultural value such as crime has been concealed. Examining reader responses as a starting point identifies some reasons why crime fiction fulfils a need. Readers in an empirical study spoke about the strong narrative as a distraction, the predictability as a comfort and the safe distance from events as a reassurance that left them feeling that reading crime fiction was a refuge from the world. -

[email protected] Abstract In 2015, Indonesian author Eka Kurniawan achieved huge critical success in the English-speaking world with his translated novels Beauty is a Wound and Man Tiger. Man Tiger has been described in the international media as a novel that both deploys and subverts many classic tropes of the crime genre, with a distinctly Indonesian twist. Originally published in Indonesian language more than a decade earlier in 2004, Lelaki Harimau did not initially achieve huge critical acclaim or attention locally. In this paper, I examine Eka Kurniawan’s rise to literary prominence, the labelling of his novel as crime fiction, as well as the power relations involved in the processes of translation, global distribution, and international reception, that have impacted upon his local reputation. -

I first articulated the term “quiet realism” while reading James Joyce’s Dubliners during a tutorial with Professor Patrick O’Keeffe in the spring of my junior year in the Honors Tutorial College. It was how I came to describe the type of story whose ending feels subtle and unexpected, in that there is no obvious external resolution—no distinct feeling of an action closing the narrative; instead, a central character experiences a quiet, poignant, internal emotional resonance, like smacking a pair of tweezers against your palm and holding them up to your ear to hear small, metallic hum in the brief two seconds before it vanishes. One concept of the traditional story is a narrative in which a change occurs, whether that change be in physical, emotional, or spiritual circumstances, or some mixture of the three, in one or more persons involved. -

Faris Reflecting the paradoxical nature of its title, magical realism is a complicated term to define and to apply to works of art. Some writers and critics argue that classifying texts as magical realism essentializes and exoticizes works by marginalized authors from the latter part of the twentieth-century, particularly Latin American and postcolonial writers, while others consider magical realism to be nothing more than a marketing label used by publishers. These criticisms along with conflicting definitions of the term have made classifying contemporary works that employ techniques of magical realism a challenge. My dissertation counters these criticisms by elucidating the value of magical realism as a narrative mode in the twenty-first century and underlining how magical realism has become an appealing means for representing contemporary anxieties in popular culture. To this end, I analyze how the characteristics of magical realism are used in a select group of novels and films in order to demonstrate the continued significance of the genre in modern art. I compare works from Tea Obreht and Haruki Murakami, examine the depiction of adolescent females in young adult literature, and discuss the environmental and apocalyptic anxieties portrayed in the films Beasts of the Southern Wild, Take iii Shelter, and Melancholia. -

Rowling's Harry Potter series. Librarians and others who recommend books to youth are having a difficult time suggesting other fantasy books to those who have read the Harry Potter series and want to read other similar fantasy books, because they are not as familiar with the youth fantasy genre as with other genres. This study analyzed a list of youth fantasy books and compared them to the books in the Harry Potter series, through a breakdown of their fantasy elements (i.e., fantasy subgenres, main characters, secondary characters, plot elements, and miscellaneous elements) .Books chosen for the study were selected from lists of youth fantasy books recommended to fantasy readers and others that are currently in print. The study provides a resource for fantasy readers by quantifying the elements of the youth fantasy books, as well as creating a guide for those interested in the Harry Potter books. It also helps fill a gap in the research of youth fantasy. 1 Post-Authenticity: Literary Dialect and Realism in Victorian and Neo-Victorian Social Novels By: Suzanne Pickles A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities School of English July 2018 2 Abstract This thesis considers what a post-authenticity approach to literary dialect studies should be. Once we have departed from the idea of literary dialect studies being engaged in ascertaining whether or not the fictional representation of nonstandard speech varieties can be matched with those same varieties in the external world, how should we study the dialect we find in novels? I argue that literary dialect studies should be placed within critical work on the realist novel, since the representation of speech, like the broader field of realism, aims to reflect an external world, one with which the reader can identify. This, as yet, has not been done. My approach is to place greater emphasis on the role of the reader. I consider the ways in which writers use literary dialect to manage readers’ responses to characters, and the nature of those responses. I give a close reading of Victorian and neo-Victorian novels to show that, whilst the subject matter of these works has changed over time to suit a modern readership, the dialect representation – its form and the attitudes to language usage it communicates – is conservative. Referring to recent surveys, and through my own research with real readers, I show that nonstandard speakers are still regarded as less well-educated and of a lower social class than those who speak Standard English. -

The majority of the magic realist narrative is set in a postcolonial context and written from the perspective of the politically oppressed group. Magic realism, by giving the marginalized and the oppressed a voice, allows them to tell their own story, to reinterpret the established version of history written from the dominant perspective and to create their own version of history. This innovative narrative mode in its opposition of the notion of absolute history emphasizes the possibility of simultaneous existence of many truths at the same time. In this paper, the researcher, in efforts to unfold conditions culturally marginalized, explores the relevance of alternative sense of reality to reinterpret the official version of colonial history in Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children from the perspective of magic realism. As a methodological approach to respond to the fiction text, magic realism endows reinterpretation and reconsideration of the official colonial history in reaffirmation of identity of the culturally marginalized people with diverse voices.
