D. “Bat” Masterson arrived at the Dodge City train depot with seven Northern Cheyenne men as prisoners. The State of Kansas was charging them with forty murders in what would later be identified as the last “Indian raid” in Kansas. In 1877 the government had ordered all Northern Cheyennes to move to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, which most of the tribe had found intolerable. A group of about 350 Northern Cheyenne men, women, and children escaped in September 1878. They Ofought skirmishes and raided throughout western Kansas, and eventually split into two groups—one under leadership of Little Wolf and one under Dull Knife (or Morning Star). The Little Wolf band eluded the U.S. Army, but 149 of those under Dull Knife were finally imprisoned at Camp Robinson in Nebraska.1 While army officials determined their fate, they remained in custody into the winter. They attempted to break out of captivity on January 9, 1879, and, after military reprisal, perhaps less than fifteen men remained alive. A few who escaped sought refuge at the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota. Military authorities sent most of the survivors back to Indian Territory except for seven men who were destined for trial in Kansas. The seven men arriving in Dodge City, a remnant of the Dull Knife fighting force, would face Ford County charges.2 Denise Low received a National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Fellowship for completion of this article.

    THE FRONT-BACK MODEL: HOW DOES IT WORK? JAY GALBRAITH November 2005 The front-back structure, when it works, rests on three strong legs. First, there is a strong front-end focused on customer relationships, shopper insights and mastery of channels. Second, there is a strong global back-end based on products and brands, user insights and a global product development process. Less obvious and equally essential is strong leadership – the third leg linking the front and the back. Hewlett-Packard lags IBM because the company has not had the strong leadership to make the front-end an equal partner to the product lines. Carly Fiorina tried to be the link by herself, despite Board requests for a COO. Similarly when Procter & Gamble went to its Organization 2005, Jager tried to bridge the GBU-MDO gap by himself. He failed. He supported the GBUs, increased R&D spending and the MDOs were overwhelmed with new product launches. When Lafley took over, he immediately expanded top management capacity by adding a Vice-Chairman in charge of the MDOs. Driven in part by succession issues, Lafley has created four Vice-Chairmen in charge of clusters of GBUs (15 in total) and MDOs (7 in total). Jim Kilts, who is leading the P&G-Gillette integration, is the fifth Vice-Chairman. The result is sufficient enterprise management capacity to link the front and the back. The means by which this leadership is exercised is through the management processes and personal networks. The management processes are necessary because the front-back model is an interdependent system of profit centers.

    Issue 37 July 2015 Negro Leaguers in Service If they can fight and die on Okinawa and Guadalcanal in the South Pacific, they can play baseball in America. Baseball Commissioner AB "Happy" Chandler This edition of the Baseball in Wartime Newsletter is dedicated to all the African- American baseball players who served with the armed forces during World War II. More than 200 players from baseball’s Negro Leagues entered military service between 1941 and 1945. Some served on the home front, while others were in combat in Europe, North Africa and the Pacific. These were the days of a segregated military and life was never easy for these men, but, for some, playing baseball made the summer days a little more bearable. Willard Brown and Leon Day (the only two black players on the team) helped the OISE All-Stars win the European Theater World Series in 1945, Joe Greene helped the 92nd Infantry Division clinch the Mediterranean Theater championship the same year, Jim Zapp was on championship teams in Hawaii in 1943 and 1944, and Larry Doby, Chuck Harmon, Herb Bracken and Johnny Wright were Midwest Servicemen League all- stars in 1944. Records indicate that no professional players from the Negro Leagues lost their lives in service during WWII, but at least two semi-pro African-American ballplayers made the ultimate sacrifice. Grady Mabry died from wounds in Europe in December 1944, and Aubrey Stewart was executed by German SS troops the same month. With Brown and Day playing for the predominantly white OISE All-Stars, Calvin Medley pitching for the Fleet Marine Force team in Hawaii, and Don Smith pitching alongside former major leaguers for the Greys in England, integrated baseball made its appearance during the war years and quite possibly paved the way for the signing of Jackie Robinson.

The second image is of Walter Stanley Campbell talking with White Bull in the early 1930s. Campbell’s oral interviews of prominent Indians during 1928-1932 formed the basis of some of his most respected books on Indian history. The third photograph is of another White Bull ledger drawing in which he is shown taking horses from General Terry’s advancing column at the Little Big Horn River, Montana, 1876. On the stage of late nineteenth century frontier melodrama, three actors blazed a trail for the cowboy to pass from man to myth. Frank Mayo’s Davy Crockett, William Cody’s Buffalo Bill, and James Wallick’s Jesse James represent a theatrical bloodline in the genealogy of frontier heroes.

The job behind the plate is without question the most difficult to perform, Oand those who excel at it rank among the toughest players in the game. To catch effectively, one has to be a good fielder, have a good throwing arm, be able to call the right pitches, be a good psy- chologist when it comes to dealing with pitchers, know how to engage tactfully with umpires, how to stave off injuries, and have the fortitude to block the plate and to stand in front of speeding or sliding runners and risk serious injury. Catching is not a position for the dumb or the lazy or the faint-hearted. To wear the mask and glove, players have to be smart. They have to be tough, fearless, and strong. They must be alert, agile, and accountable. They are the ones in charge of their teams when on the field, and they have to be able to handle that job skillfully.
