The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church About the Cover Theme: A Voyage to Heavenly Home In the boat that is the Church we are making our voyage to the eternal light (nuhro). The boat is not ours, but Christ’s. It is Christ who steers her – and He shall not let her sink even when the sea is rough and the wind is against us (Pope Benedict XVI). We look forward to reach that eternal light (nuhro) in God’s kingdom to be with all God’s holy ones, “And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever” (Revelation 22:5). In Christ’s light (nuhro) do we see light (Ps.36:9) as the future priests who are called to participate in the one priesthood of Christ and accompany the families towards our heavenly home. Our Faith is that light that guides us in this voyage in this moon-lit night while our hearts sing “The LORD is my light (nuhro) and my salvation…” (Psalm 27:1) St. Mary’s Malankara Seminary MAJOR SEMINARY OF SYRO MALANKARA CATHOLIC CHURCH Nalanchira, Trivandrum - 695 015, Kerala, India Tel : +91 471 2114300, +91 471 2114100 Fax : +91 471 2532521 Email : [email protected], [email protected] www.malankaraseminary.com, www.smms-in.urbaniana.edu 2018-19 Nuhro is a syriac word, meaning light. Jesus is ‘the light of the world’ (Jn 8:12). Jesus has called us to be the ‘sons of light’ (Jn 12:36) in the world especially in the darkest places where people are in need of God’s Mercy. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). I offer my tribute to you all for having chosen such a relevant theme for reflection and study. The first blessing that God gave to man is to be fruitful : God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful” (Genesis 1:28). “Man fully alive is the glory of God”, said St. Irenios. Fullness is to be found in cognitive, spiritual, physicial and social growth. This is the mean and aim of the family life. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love” (Eph: 1:3-4). Let us thank God for the rich blessings. He has showered on our Seminary and pray for His continued blessings. Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, calls us to be holy, to be conformed to His image and likeness. The vocation to holiness means putting into practice, in one’s own daily life, the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. That makes a family model to the Holy Family. It reminds us that we are co-creators and co-workers in the divine work to create model family that is the basis of the Church. I take this occasion to express my appreciation to very Rev. Dr. Kuriakose Thadathil, Rector, Rev. Fr. Jolly Karimpil, the Chief-Editor, Rev. Fathers, Bro. John Aluvila, the student Editor, Brothers and all the members of the Seminary community. MARy’S Malankara Seminary, Trivandrum Editorial hat the family in this post-modern world has been going through a period of unusually fast changes is common knowledge. Tenacious impact of the global Tupheavals has beset family life to a great extent. The traditional physiognomy of Christian family is waning. And the growing number of dysfunctional families and divorces threatens to rupture the fabric of our society. We are called to probe what the way forward might be, out of the current impasse, for the Church whose members have a great responsibility for today’s world. In his most recent apostolic exhortation Gaudete et exsultate His Holiness Pope Francis recalls how God wants us to be holy (cf. Gen 17:1; Eph 1:4), because it is only in holiness that do we find “true life, the happiness for which we were created.” Holiness is a gift that is already poured into our hearts at the moment of baptism, but at the same time it is a task that will be brought to completion only at the conclusion of our earthly pilgrimage. The journey towards holiness is something common for the bishops, priests, religious and the laity alike. As the pastors, however, we are urged by the Supreme Pontiff to accompany families towards our ultimate goal, i.e. entering into the divine life of the Triune God, who is a family. Heeding the call of the Pope, St. Mary’s Seminary chose the theme – Accompanying families towards holiness – as the motto for the year 2018-19. Nuhro 2019 will explore many facets of this theme. In this edition, we also recall with gratitude the abundant fruit of the meritorious services of Fr John Berchmans OIC, who left for heavenly abode on 9th September 2018 and left us all with deep sorrow. In the twilight of his great life, he lavished his services in Malankara Seminary as Theology Professor and Spiritual Father. He will go down the memory lane as one of the most illustrious sons of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. He was a towering intellectual figure, who earned doctorate in Scripture at the prestigious Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome. He was a biblical scholar but he decided to dedicate his entire life for the Malankara Catholic mission of Bahya Kerala. If there was one word we could find to describe Berchmans achen it would be that he was faithful. He was faithful to Christ, faithful to his Congregation and the Church, and faithful to all people entrusted to his pastoral care. As a true sanyasi he embodied a profound approach to sharing God’s love here on earth. Through his beliefs, visions, words and actions he epitomized the true meaning of priesthood. With gratitude for Fr. Berchmans’ contributions to the seminary, we honor his memory by dedicating Nuhro 2019 to him. I find it gratifying to see the great strides Nuhro has made in meeting the high standard for quality and clarity. Its success is directly related to the hard work, collective enthusiasm and devotion of the individuals who make up the Nuhro team and the encouragement of the seminary community. We are deeply grateful to our contributors and sponsors for their support. Our earnest gratitude to Mr. Gireesh G. for the fascinating Layout. Let’s unravel Nuhro 2019! Fr. These hermits took their religious vows in India as Christian saṃnyāsis, in the hands of Father Bede, and then returned to California to ignite a contemplative renewal in the Christian dispirited tradition. Some tried to integrate such Indian tradition in the Benedictine order, while others traced new paths. KEY WORDS Bede; Griffiths; California; saṃnyāsa; Camaldoli; Christianity Preliminary Remarks— Sources and Definitions The present paper profited greatly from its main sources, Sr. Michaela Terrio and Br. Francis Ali, hermits at Sky Farm Hermitage, who generously shared with me their memories of Bede Griffiths as well as spiritual insights of their life of renunciation as Christian saṃnyāsis in California. Several of the personalities mentioned in this article are personally known to the author. I offer a definition of the main terms used here:saṃnyāsis ‘ ’ are the renouncers, the acosmic hermits in the tradition of the Gītā; ‘saṃnyāsa’ is the ancient Indian consecration to acosmism and also the fourth and last stage (aśhrama) in the growth of human life; ‘guru’ is a polysemic word in India; its theological meaning depends on the religious tradition.

While their goal was to help the church, their activities increased British power in the community. The results of CMS involvement included increasing interference of British officials in matters internal to the Malankara Church (e.g., episcopal succession), tacit recognition of the authority of colonial courts to resolve disputes in the church, and the fragmentation of the St. Thomas Christian community. These effects reshaped the church into something more consistent with British Christianity and more subject to British rule. (Lk. 5:4). St. Aloysius Minor Seminary has taken these words as the motto for the academic year 2016-2017. By "going deep" we find our Christian vocation and mission especially in having a personal relationshion with the living Christ. When Peter and his companions acted according to the command of the Lord, they had a miraculous catch (Lk. 5:6). In the same way, our Seminarians strive to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus in everything we do, we are, and we are called to be. In many areas of life, especially in our discipleship, we can work so hard and seem to have so little to show for it.

This is a report respectfully submitted in response to the Kalpana No. 5/74 dated August 10, 1974 from His Grace the Secretary to the Holy Synod, asking for background information and interpretation on the questions raised by His Holiness the Patriarch of Antioch in his letter 52/74 dated 30-1-74 (paras 1, 4 & 4) and 196/74 dated 15-7-74 (point 1), concerning the throne of St. Thomas and its place in the Malankara Church. We were asked to examine the points biblically, historically and theologically. 2. The Word and its biblical use The word throne is thronos in Greek, kisse in Hebrew, korse in Biblical Aramaic, and kursyo in Syriac. The Hebrew word kisse is used for the seat of authority of a king, prince or judge. Primarily it is applied to the seat of God (1 Kings 22:19, Isaiah 6:1, Ezekiel 1:26, Psalms 11:4,47:8 etc). Pharaoh?s throne is referred to in Genesis 41:40, Exodus 11:5 etc. David?s throne is referred to quite frequently (2 Sam. 3:10, 1 Kgs. 2:5 etc). The Hebrew word kisse is rarely used for the seat of priests. In 1 Sam. 1:9 we see Eli the priest sitting on his throne beside the doorposts of the temple. In Sam.

  • From Experience to Testimony Thematic Guidelines for Study and Discussion
THE SYRO-MALANKARA CATHOLIC CHURCH THE FIRST MALANKARA CATHOLIC CHURCH ASSEMBLY TRIVANDRUM, 21-23 SEPTEMBER, 2011 FROM EXPERIENCE TO TESTIMONY THEMATIC GUIDELINES FOR STUDY AND DISCUSSION Dr. Abraham Mar Julios (Chairman, Core-committee) FOREWORD The Holy Episcopal Synod of the Syro-Malankara Church, had entrusted me with the task of preparing the Lineamenta or Guidelines for the First Malankara Church Assembly, to be held in September 2011. Evangelization was selected as Theme of the Assembly. A half-day consultation was done at Shantinilayam, Tiruvalla with a small Group of four people, consisting of Msgr. Antony Kackanatt, Sister Dr. Namita SIC, Mr. Jomi Thomas and me. The first draft of the Lineamenta was presented in Malayalam before the Episcopal Synod, in December 2010, and the Synod Fathers suggested, I should provide an English version as basic text, which could be translated also into Tamil, Kannada and Hindi. The Draft had to be reworked for theological correctness and systematic presentation. The Key Bible verse we have selected is Isaiah 6:8 “Lord, here I am! Send me”! The Leitmotiv is “From Experience to Testimony”. The Theme of the Assembly has to be discussed and prayed over by all the sections of the Malankara Church. The message has to be imbibed by the whole people of God and should percolate through the cross sections of the Church. The Eparchial Assemblies and the Church Assembly should motivate us to rededicate ourselves to the great cause of Announcing the Good News all over the world and winning souls for the Kingdom of God, and contributing to the growth of the Church.

INTERNATIONAL JOINT COMMISSION FOR THEOLOGICAL DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE ORIENTAL ORTHODOX CHURCHES REPORT Sixth Meeting Rome, Italy, January 26 to 30, 2009 The sixth meeting of the International Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches took place in Rome from January 26 to 30, 2009. The meeting was chaired jointly by His Eminence Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and His Eminence Metropolitan Bishoy of Damiette, General Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Joining delegates from the Catholic Church were representatives of the following Oriental Orthodox Churches: the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Syrian Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church (Catholicosate of All Armenians), the Armenian Apostolic Church (Holy See of Cilicia), the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahido Church. As the members gathered for the meeting, they learned with great sadness that His Grace Philipos Mar Eusebius, Metropolitan of Thumpamon, India, a representative of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church since the inception of the dialogue, had passed away only a few days earlier, on January 21. They expressed their condolences to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Most of the members attended the Vespers Service presided over by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at the Basilica of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls on the evening of January 25 for the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The two delegations met separately on January 26, and held plenary sessions each day from January 27 to January 30.
