The Department

The Diagnostics Hub was developed in 2017 at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in order to -provide state of the art and diagnostic support to ambu- latory and unscheduled care. The Hub provides additional scanning capacity for a comprehensive CT colonography and CT & MR cardiac ser- vice, underpinning projects and pilots in streamlining patient pathways to support early cancer diagnosis.

We are currently developing and implementing innovative pathways including one stop clinics for diagnosis of prostate & endometrial cancer and assessment of patients with haematuria. Pathway innovation enables best use of the available resources, facilitates timely diagnosis and enables early & appropriate patient management. The work we are currently undertaking has ensured better patient care and ultimately im- prove patient outcomes.

Following a visit to Denmark the Royal Glamorgan Hospital is currently one of two sites in South Wales piloting a Rapid Cancer Diagnostic clinic in partnership with the Welsh Cancer Network where patients with vague symptoms are directly referred by their GP for a diagnosis with- in days rather than weeks. Additional capacity provided by the Hub has supported, enhanced and accelerated new ways of working to ensure we deliver a high quality diagnostic service. The Hub also offers a centre of excellence for training and professional development.

There is considerable refurbishment within the next phase of the Prince Charles redevelopment scheme including a new CT scanner. Health Board funding has also been approved to replace a number of general radiography rooms with up to date DR equipment. A new Siemens 1.5T MRI scanner was installed in 2019. Refurbishment of the CT suite has recently been completed at the Princess of Wales Hospital with the in- stallation of a new CT scanner. A comprehensive, open access service is availa- ble to primary care practitioners where clinically appropriate.

The department has been pro-active in development of skill mix. The barium meal service is now principally performed by appropriately trained Radiographers, some of whom also report. The majority of the Ultrasound service is managed by appropriately trained and motivated Sonographers (including vascular and muscu- loskeletal speciality practice). Four reporting Radiographers report on A&E ap- pendicular and axial images, and there is training being undertaken for 4 addition- al radiographers to report chest x-rays. In addition, we have a radiographer re- porting CT head scans, as well as CT intracranial angiograms. A superintendent RGH/PCH Consultant Staff
