COMMON NAME; Forest Oak, Rose She-oak FAMILY; Casuarinaceae ORIGIN; NSW, QLD HEIGHT; 10-20mt WIDTH; 4-6mt HABIT; A slender conical tree with a graceful appearance, erect upright rough trunk with drooping foliage often purplish in colour. Bark is rough and corky. Relatively fast growing. FOLIAGE; Evergreen. Pendulous needle like leaves, green when young but turning purplish red in autumn and winter. A very attractive feature of the tree from which it gets one of its name of Rose She-oak FLOWERS; Dioecious. Male flowers in slender spikes to 4.5cm long at ends of 1-yr-old branchlets. Female flowers in ovoid heads on 5mm peduncles in upper 2-yr-old twigs. FLOWERING SEASON; Spring to summer FRUIT; Woody cones 3.5cm long and 2.5cm wide. CULTURE & USE; A very hardy tree useful for screens, parks, amenity plantings, windbreaks, may be planted as a street tree if no overhead wires are present. Minimum natural rainfall 550-1250mm. PRUNING; Some light trimming may be beneficial to help thicken growth, but care should be taken not to spoil the form of the tree. COMMENTS; Allocasuarina torulosa is an under used tree, its graceful erect form and bronze red foliage makes this one of the most attractive Casuarina's and should make this a much wider used tree. It will grow in a wide range of climate and soil conditions, but prefers more fertile soils and a warm position.
