By Bob Parsaliti Greg Stains has a passion for football. In his first four seasons as North Hagerstown’s head coach, Stains has greeted his teams with open arms. He has the utmost respect for the players with high expectations. Football is as much a teaching moment as it is an athletic endeavor. But this year’s version of the Hubs is a little different. Stains’ teaching approach and standards are the same, but this North team has been part of a project. “This is the most excited I have been for a season since my first one,” Stains said. “After I took the job, I started working the eighth-graders, getting them to lift weights and preparing them. The kids know our program. I’m excited to see if my methodology will work out.” Those eighth-graders are now seniors and the virtual backbone of this North team. They enter this season with a working knowledge of the game and a lot of upside. The fact that North plays seven home games doesn’t hurt either. “We have a good core group of kids,” Stains said. “They know the system. This is the first time we have had the same coordinators back with the team and the kids are grasping everything. We don’t have to spend time teaching. “But like everyone else, we are low in numbers. We have to work to keep everyone healthy and fresh.” North has 16 seniors listed on the roster. Most were part of Stains’ preparation project. Scott Neal (6-foot-1, 205) is a major part of the group. He settles into the backfield after spending time at and wingback last season. He will be joined in the Wing-T backfield by A.J. Cook (5-10, 190) and seniors Chase McCoy (5-2, 145), Ben Herrera (5-10, 175) and Elijah Keyes (5-6, 137), who will all see time running the . “Scott will be the halfback,” Stains said. “If he continues to improve, everyone will have to watch out because he will be the best back in the county. He’s a good, solid kid. He’s a little beat up from playing baseball. We are trying to save his knees. “A.J. has been phenomenal. He’s been taking plays and breaking them. He just needs to believe in me and what I’m telling him.” North’s offense will be in the hands of Jaynaz Melendez (5-10, 160), who returns after being pressed into the varsity quarterback spot as a sophomore. Neal was injured, then moved into the backfield while Melendez took the snaps. “Jaynaz has more confidence and has worked hard in the weight room,” Stains said. “He had a good summer. We will be running the Wing- T out of the gun and he has a gun.” Melendez’s top receiver is senior Ryan Clark (5-11, 140), who almost didn’t come out for football this season. “Receiving is where we are the deepest,” Stains said. “After coming out of baseball, Ryan told me he might not play. Then he came out and said that he missed it and wanted to come back.” Other receivers include junior Hunter Keller (6-0, 160) and senior Jamaal Campbell (6-0, 160). The Hubs also will move Neal, Keyes, McCoy and Herrera into pass-catching situations. “Hunter has the best hands on the team,” Stains said. “We have Herrera in the slot because he has speed. And Jamaal is our wild card.” All the skill positions look promising, thanks to the large offensive line up front. The cornerstones are a pair of juniors — Will Klein (6-4, 315), who has a year of experience under him and college eyes on him — and Owen Strite (6-0, 217). “They both started as sophomores and communicate well with each other, and they are good friends,” Stains said. “Klein is the real deal. Even with his size, he has the speed to pull to the edge.” Other linemen include sophomores Nick Sprecher (5-8, 225) and Trevor Watts (6-0, 210), and senior Mohamed Barrie (6-2, 205). Junior Jim Sword (6-5, 200) and senior Logan Gleason (6-2, 235) are competing for the center position. “We have seven or eight linemen we can use,” Stains said. North’s defense lost a lot of talent to graduation, but still has some playmakers, led by two linemen — seniors Jakob Connor (6-0, 236) and Christian Teague (6-6, 240). Connor averaged 8.8 tackles and had 7 1/2 sacks last season, while Teague is an offensive lineman’s nightmare because he is such a space eater. “Mark my word ... I think Connor is the best defensive lineman in the county, bar none,” Stains said. “He has great technique and desire. He has improved each year. If he were 6-2 or 6-3, more Division I colleges would be looking at him. “Teague is learning to play with his hands better and he has great wingspan. A lot of colleges are watching him because of his length. I just wish he was a little meaner.” Offensive linemen — Klein, Strite, Berrie and the rest — will rotate in for defensive duty in a way that will allow them to stay fresh on the offensive side. The inside linebackers will be Neal and senior Isaiah McElroy (5-9, 185) to start the season, with junior Ira Roberts (5-7, 160) coming back after he recovers from a broken finger. “Both (Neal) and McElroy look good filling gaps and positioning people on the defense,” Stains said. The outside linebackers will be Herrera, senior Jasiah Wing (5-11, 170), McCoy and senior Bailey Wilson (6-2, 181). Keller will work at free safety, while Keyes and junior Kaelib McElroy (5-8, 168) will share cornerback duties with Clark. Senior Cesar Torres-Lopez returns for the kicking duties. Stains’ “methodology” has produced a team that carries a lot of chemistry. “There is some maturity in this group,” he said. “They all get along really well. Everyone is there for everyone. That closeness will get us through any tough times.” There is hope that five years of preparation will result in some solid football. “We have to make the next step,” Stains said. “Our goals are to score four a game, control the ball, avoid big turnovers and stay away from penalties at key times. “This is exciting. I’m looking forward to the season.” stay away from penalties at key times. “This is exciting. I’m looking forward to the season.”

Hubs Football Helmets Through the Years GREG STAINS North Hagerstown Varsity Head Coach Coach Stains was officially hired as Varsity Head Coach of North Hagerstown HS in August of 2014. He played in the North football program from 1980- 1983 under longtime Head Coach Glenn Cross, moved on to play at the collegiate level at Shepherd University, then returned to North as a coach in 2008. After coaching freshman football for one season, Stains was promoted to the varsity level as the team's line coach in 2009, a spot he held until being named head coach in 2014. After a rough 2014 campaign where the Hubs went winless with the toughest schedule in the state, Coach Stains knew he had to rebuild the program after a run of numerous talented players had graduated. In October of 2015 during his second season, the Hubs defeated the Frederick Cadets, 42-12, for his first victory as head coach. North finished with only one victory in 2015, two more in 2016 and earned four wins in 2017. Coach Stains teams have improved each season he has been head coach and he has plenty of optimism heading into the 2018 season. For the first time in his tenure the majority of the coaching staff returns, along with numeous starters from last year's team. If the trend holds true---the Hubs will continue on their upward path to success.

South Hagerstown HS opened in September of 1956. For the first time Hagerstown had two high schools. Although our school was still reffered to as Hagerstown High for another year, the North foundation was now here. Our new school finally opened in September of 1958. Hagerstown High School Football Head Coaches 1920 Washington County High School for Boys Football Team

First known high school football photo of Washington Co HS Johnny Farra

During the 1935 season Hagerstown's star QB Johnny Farra led the Maroon & Gray to a 3-0-1 record into the Mercersburg Academy game. In that game, Farra was attempting to make a tackle late in the third quarter when he tragically broke his neck on the play. Farra was taken to Washington County Hospital where he died the next day. The following game against Martinsburg was postponed while the Washington County school board decided on the fate of football in the county. The WCSB decided to allow Hagerstown to play out their schedule and continue playing football. In the next game following the Farra death, the Maroon & Gray played with heavy hearts, while pulling out a 7-6 victory over Handley of Winchester. Hagerstown finished the season with a 26-7 setback at Waynesboro, but managed to gain a tie for the CVAL Title. A championship that was dedicated to Johnny Farra.
