  • Tame Valley to Heights
Along the Tame Valley to Heights Start: Millgate Car Park, Millgate, Delph Distance: 8.2 kilometres/5 miles Ascent: 270 metres/885 feet Time: 3 hours Introduction Starting from the quaint little village of Delph this easy, delightful walk sets out along the Tame Valley, where you will see rich evidence of the area’s historic and industrial past. At the head of the valley, you will pass through Denshaw, Saddleworth’s most northerly village, which has seen human activity since the Stone Age. Leaving the valley, the route now crosses farmland to the 18th century Heights Chapel, which has appeared in several films and television productions. Here you can enjoy a rest in the Heights Pub before making the final short descent back into Delph. Walk Description Nestled at the convergence of the Castleshaw and Denshaw valleys, Delph derives its name from the old English word ‘delf’, which means ‘quarry’. Bakestones were quarried in the Castleshaw Valley, just to the north of the village: the three-quarter inch thick quarried tiles were used to bake oatcakes and muffins. The area was probably first populated around the time that a Roman garrison was stationed at the Castleshaw Fort in AD79. From the late 1700s, the area supported the thriving textile industry, and the centre of the village has changed little since the early 19th century. The start point for this delightful walk is Millgate car park opposite the Co-operative Hall. Built in 1864, the hall is now a theatre and library and is managed by a local theatrical group called Saddleworth Players.

This took place on the 25th September, three days after our Annual General Meeting. The launch was combined with a day school on “Mapping the Past” which was held under the auspices of the South Pennine History Forum, a group of local history societies from across the South Pennines. Much of our efforts since the launch have been directed towards promoting sales of the book and during the year we have held several exhibitions and book-signing events. The production of the book has been a monumental task for the Society and I would like to pay tribute to all the hard work that went into it by the publications committee. But all the effort has been worth it; the book is a wonderful production which enhances our reputation as a local historical society.

Transport for Students aged 16-19 in Continuing Education Academic Year 2019/2020 BACKGROUND 1. This policy has been developed in response to responsibilities placed on the LA under the consolidated version of the Education Act 1996, Learning and Skills Act 2000, Education Act 2002, Education and Inspections Act 2006 and Education Skills Act 2008, in respect of transport arrangements for 16-19 year olds in continuing education. SCOPE AND COVERAGE OF THE POLICY 2. The policy relates to provision planned for the academic year 2019/20, i.e. from 1st September 2019 to 31st August 2020. 3. The policy is in two parts: the main body provides background and context; the support available to students, which is provided through the partners, is described in detail in Annex A. 4. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the detail contained in Annex A, the Council reserves the right to modify the detailed arrangements over the life of this policy. 5. In line with the legislation, this policy is primarily aimed at full-time students aged 16-19 inclusive, with support continuing to the end of the course, where the course started before the student had reached the age of 19. W. Harrison We are very sad to have to report that one of the new members of your committee, Peter Robinson, died last March. This was obviously a great loss to his family, and also to his friends, all to whom we extend our heart-felt condolences. Peter had only just commenced his service with the committee and was looking forward to help the Society grow. His loss is our sad loss. Your committee is still struggling to operate as well as we would wish due to a reduction in the number of trustees. There just aren’t enough to carry on the business of the Society properly. This year Charles Baumann has left the committee after many years of service when he undertook various tasks such as chairing lectures, organizing fund raising Flea Markets with me, publicising our events and other ventures as the need arose.

  • Grab a Quick Snack at Pumpkin Café Shop ...Or Sit and Relax for a Bit
grab a quick snack at Pumpkin café shop .....or sit and relax for a bit longer over a coffee and a bite to eat at Caffé Ritazza — Shudehill Interchange has it all and more”. The café shop never opened and Caffé Ritazza closed within a few weeks through lack of custom. Compare this with Huddersfield bus station below at 11.35 on a Saturday morning. Together with a daily passenger throughput of 33,000+, it has thriving retail units and a very busy café especially popular with O.A.P’s. All the 31 pairs of automatic doors work here too! Note the large pair of overhead double-sided electronic departure boards. Had the £28 million been spent on a grand central interchange at Piccadilly Gardens incorporating trams, buses and National Express, we should now have a facility that would have really enhanced the city and been popular with both passengers and bus operators. We believe the gardens are owned by the City Council so land acquisition costs would largely have been avoided and the £28 million gone so much further in providing a magnificent interchange. Instead of that we’re stuck with a red brick office block, an ugly concrete wall, portable urinals at weekends and probably the worst city centre bus waiting facility in the country! Wouldn’t you say a lack of foresight both by GMPTA/E and the City Council? 11 BURY INTERCHANGE: Automatic doors were fitted a few years ago to five stands (P to V) and were probably expensive. They’ve not worked for at least 18 months if that, and remain permanently open.

  • Complete List of Officers and Men Ashton Pals Battalion 1914
Complete List of Officers and Men Ashton Pals Battalion The Cheshire Reporter August 15 th 1914 An Historic Number On page 6 of this issue we give a complete list of the names of the officers and men of the Ashton Battalion Territorials. At such a time the list of names must be of supreme interest to the people of Ashton and district as there is scarcely a family that has not a representative or friend in the Territorials. This is the first time in history the Territorials have been called up on active service and the public interest in this fine body of citizen soldiers has been much deepened by the announcement made during the week that no less than 858 of the Territorials have in response to an invitation from the War Office volunteered for service abroad. It was not known up to yesterday (Friday) when they would be called upon to leave the town, but a communication is expected from the War Office at any moment. The men are standing by in readiness for the call. They are full of enthusiasm and are eager to go wherever they should be called. It is stated that they may be asked to go to Malta, Gibraltar or Egypt. For this reason the publication of the names of the whole of the officers and men of the battalion constitutes this issue of the “Reporter” an historic number. This list has never previously been given anywhere. It should therefore be kept by everyone and will no doubt be cherished in families for many generations showing as it will the noble response made by their ancestors when, England and all Europe was involved in the greatest peril the human race has ever known.
