2015 Pacific Games Athlete Selection Criteria Overview for Beach Volleyball: The Guam Volleyball Federation (GVBF) will be hosting tryouts in order to nominate athletes for the Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball team to the Guam National Olympic Committee (GNOC) for the 2015 Pacific Games to be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from July 4 - 18, 2015. The initial selection process for athletes will be pooled from the expanded roster submitted to the GNOC. The athletes will be identified and selected by the coaching staff based on their abilities and skills demonstrated during the tryout events for the National Team. The final nomination process will be made by the coaching staff and approved by the GVBF. These individuals will be nominated to the GNOC for final review and selection. Each athlete must fill out the required application forms provided to them by the GVBF and must meet the requirements set out by the GVBF and the GNOC. Each athlete is required to participate in all the fundraising efforts to send Team Guam to the 2015 Pacific Games. The exact amount needed to fundraise will be announced at a later date. The rough estimate is $2,500 for airfare and $850.00 ($50.00 per day x 17 days) for per diem. Total estimated cost is $3,350.00 per athlete excluding the uniform costs. Team Roster Size: Team size for individual events will be in accordance with the 2015 Pacific Games Charter. The team roster size is two (2) male athletes for the men’s team and two (2) females for the women’s team. Nomination Date: The final selection of nominated athletes by the GVBF to the GNOC will be December 5, 2015. Announcement: Announcements for the 2015 Beach Volleyball National Team will be posted immediately to the GVBF website, the GVBF Facebook page, and advertised in the Guam Pacific Daily News and through outreach efforts with athletes in the national network as well as through the GVBF. Times and locations may change, depending on court availability. Dates will not change. Our Facebook page and website will be updated with any changes. Eligibility: To be eligible for nomination, an athlete must meet the Residency Requirements as set forth by the GNOC. The Residency Guidelines will be handed out to each athlete at the tryouts/qualification events. The athlete must be in good standing with the National Federation, GNOC and the community. Athletes with criminal convictions will not be eligible. Additional requirements for nomination: • Sign and abide by the National Federation (NF) Code of Conduct and any other applicable forms required by the NF, GNOC, Pacific Games Organizing Committee and host country; • Submit himself/herself without reservations to all doping control policies of the NF, GNOC, Games Organizing Committee, Oceania Regional Anti-doping Organization (ORADO) and World Anti-doping Association (WADA). You can find the prohibited list at: http://list.wada-ama.org • Maintaining the coach-mandated training program from the time of nomination until the end of the Games; • Maintain contact with the National Team coaches and keep them updated on your training progress; • Exhibit good sportsmanship, on and off the practice/playing field, and good character; • Attend all mandated training camps and/or practices, unless other arrangements are made; • Shall perform/participate in all fundraising activities for the GNOC and NF; • Provide proof that athlete is able to secure leave from work and/or school for the Games; • Must know the rules of competition or commit to learning the rules of competition; • Obtain a medical clearance; • Have no criminal convictions. *Note: Off-island athletes must attend the tryouts/qualifying events and are required to be back on-island by summer vacation to train with the team. The athlete must provide proof that they are actively competing and training in the sport while abroad in the form of a coach/trainer certification, event placement, etc. *Note: This does not guarantee the athlete’s nomination to the team, but that he/she will be given an opportunity to train with the team to see if there is cohesion amongst the players. Tryout Events: • October 12 th , 2014 - Men’s and Women’s at Gun Beach – 9:00 AM • October 26 th , 2014 - Men’s and Women’s at Gun Beach – 9:00 AM • November 2 nd , 2014 - Men’s and Women’s at Gun Beach – 9:00 AM • November 9 th , 2014 - Men’s and Women’s at Gun Beach – 9:00 AM • November 23 rd , 2014 - Men’s and Women’s at Gun Beach – 9:00 AM Selection Procedure: The final selection of nominated athletes will be made to the GVBF. The GVBF will take into consideration the coaching staff’s nominated athletes and meet with the coaching staff, if necessary. The final selection of nominated athletes will be submitted to the GNOC by December 5, 2015. The final selection of the Guam National Team or Team Guam will be made by the GNOC Review Committee. The GNOC will announce the names via the Guam Pacific Daily News and the GNOC website and Facebook page. Each nominated athlete must submit a commitment fee of $500.00 once he/she has be approved by the GNOC. If an athlete is a nominee on the final roster, but is not selected for the traveling team he/she will be reimbursed the commitment fee. If the athlete accepts the nomination and is selected to Team Guam by GNOC and then later withdraws, the athlete will forfeit their commitment fee and may be subject to sanctions -i.e.: not able to try out for the national team for one quadrennial (4 years) which could jeopardize the athlete’s ability to take part in the: Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, East Asian Youth Games, Asian Games, Asian Indoor Games, Asian Beach Games, Beach Games, Pacific Mini Games, Pacific Games, and the Micronesian Games. Nomination Committee: The nomination committee is comprised of the board members of the GVBF including the volleyball Athletes’ Commission members • President: Sandra Low • Vice President: Jonathan Cramer • Secretary General: Roger Wahl • Treasurer: Peter Valdez • Athletes’ Commission Member: Kyle Eckert • Athletes’ Commission Member: Gemma Datuin Conflict of Interest: If an athlete being considered for nomination has a conflict of interest with an individual(s) in the nomination committee, the individual(s) in the nomination committee shall recuse himself or herself from any discussion and decision regarding the athlete’s nomination. Due Process: Any athlete who is displeased with his/her ranking, placement or non-selection will first meet, under the guidance of their NF Athletes’ Commission Representatives Kyle Eckert (488-5178 and Gemma Datuin (788- 7683, with the coach and/or the GVBF board. If the athlete is still displeased, he/she has the right to send a written grievance to the Guam National Athletes’ Commission (GNAC). The athlete may contact GNOC at 647-4662 or [email protected] for assistance in contacting the proper GNAC members. Nomination Criteria: In nominating athletes as members of Team Guam, the coaching staff will consider the information listed below. In evaluating athletes the coaching staff will also use evaluative statistical tools. Skills to be evaluated are: 1. Attack Efficiency 2. Blocking Efficiency 3. Digging Efficiency 4. Setting Efficiency (accuracy and selection) 5. Serving Efficiency 6. Passing Efficiency The above listed criteria shall carry different importance depending upon the position the athlete is playing (e.g. Setter; Outside Attacker; Opposite Attacker; Defensive Specialist (Libero); Serving Specialist; Blocking Specialist). Other considerations shall be factored into the selection process and shall include: 1. Physicality: Strength, speed, stamina, height, and vertical. 2. Teamwork: The willingness to accept a role that leads to team success. 3. Positive Attitude: Exhibiting enthusiasm and support of teammates. 4. Versatility: Exhibiting a balance between offensive and defensive skills as well as the ability to play multiple positions and fulfill multiple roles. 5. Maturity: Exhibiting an ability to adjust to various situations, dealing with adversity, and reacting appropriately. 6. Coach Direction: Exhibiting the ability to process and incorporate input from the coaching staff. 7. Evidence of a positive trajectory of performance. 8. Other: Intangible considerations that affect the dynamics and performance of the team. The sport of Volleyball is not a measured or timed event. In the selection of athletes who will compete together as a team, it is difficult to make selection decisions based solely upon objective criteria. It is the belief of the GVBF that considering the mix of Selection Criteria set forth above, which includes subjective components as well as objective statistical measures in evaluation of performance ability, will result in selection of the best athletes who will work together as an effective team and contribute to team success. .
