Having become part of the Hodnet Estate during the reign of Henry III, it was subsequently held by the de Ludlows and the Vernons before being sold to the Pigot family around the end of the 17th century. The current Peplow Hall was built in 1725 by Hugh Pigot, replacing an old manor house on the site. The estate was subsequently sold to the Clegg family, but unfortunate financial difficulties led them to sell again to a wealthy potteries industrialist called Francis Stanier, and it was Francis Stanier who greatly enlarged the Hall in 1877, along with building the adjacent Epiphany Chapel (not owned). In the 1930s the Hall was substantially reduced in size to its current form. DESCRIPTION Peplow Hall is approached through grand wrought iron gates (listed in themselves), sweeping down the formal drive flanked by a tree-lined avenue to the front of the house. Peplow Hall is an exquisitely beautiful country house, dating from 1725 and set in magnificent gardens and grounds. The main house exudes elegance with its beautiful light panelled reception rooms and bedrooms together with the practical comforts of modern day living, with its large well presented kitchen and adjacent family sitting room. There are beautifully carved early Georgian fireplaces in all the main reception rooms, which are particularly fine and delicate. The Thomas Pritchard staircase forms a focal part of the hall which sweeps up to the first floor. The principal bedrooms are similarly well proportioned and all panelled, with four being en suite, together with two further bathrooms, all overlooking the lovely gardens and grounds and the lake in the mid-distance. Outside is a heated swimming pool and an Astroturf hard tennis court. 10 11 12 13 14 15 THE PEPLOW ESTATE To Cellar Gun Room Store Office 3.68 x 3.21 4.75 x 3.95 (12' 1" x 10' 6") (15' 7" x 13' 0") Dining Room Master Bedroom 7.44 x 5.54 7.42 x 5.85 (24' 5" x 18' 2") Dressing Room 7.18 x 5.40 (24' 4" x 19' 2") (23' 7" x 17' 9") Store Dressing Room/ 4.78 x 2.15 Bedroom 8 Nursery (15' 8" x 7' 1") Drawing Room 4.42 x 4.11 7.22 x 5.30 (14' 6" x 13' 6") 4.64 x 3.10 To Cellar (23' 8" x 17' 5") (15' 3" x 10' 2") Conservatory 6.14 x 3.14 (20' 2" x 10' 4") Bedroom 7 Light Well Store 3.97 x 3.75 4.80 x 2.74 (13' 1" x 12' 4") (15' 9" x 9' 0") Box Room Oil Tank Breakfast Kitchen 7.21 x 6.09 ) Hall ntry 0" Pantry (23' 8" x 20' 0") 6.55 x 4.46 Bedroom 3 9' 4.22 x 3.11 Pa A/C 76 6.64 x 4.47 Sitting Room x (21' 6" x 14' 7") " (13' 10" x 10' 2") 5.80 x 3.81 2. The gardens extend to about ten acres with wonderful Azaleas,Rhododendrons, Roses, herbaceous borders and its own fully enclosed walled garden, running down to the seven acre lake. Features include the Wisteria arbour, the Hydrangea walk, the formal Rose borders, the heated greenhouse with vines, and of particular note the curved private walled garden with its pleated fruit trees and Asparagus beds. This is understood to be one of the very few curved walled gardens in the country. The gardens have been created with wonderful vistas and offering distinct differing themes throughout the seasons. Beyond the formal gardens is an arboretum of fine specimen trees includingW ellingtonia, Yew, Oak and Ash amongst others. ESTATE COTTAGES Approached via a separate drive is a small cluster of six estate cottages, which are all let on ASTs, and a commercial workshop. In addition there is a lodge situated opposite the main gates, and farmhouse together with two further cottages, all let on ASTs. 18 19 HIGHWAY FARM FARMLAND The centre of the farming operation is Highway Farm.
