MAY 21st SCRANTON/WB (19-22) at PAWTUCKET (17-22) 6:15 pm

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders RHP Erik Swanson (NR) vs. LHP (2-2, 1.93)

Hello Friends – The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA-Yankees) renew their rivalry for the second time at McCoy Stadium this month when they open a 4-game series in Pawtucket tonight at 6:15 pm (Live on NESN). This will start a 9-game homestand over the next 8-days at McCoy (this Monday through Memorial Day Monday) as the PawSox host the RailRiders for 4-games followed by the 1st-place Lehigh Valley IronPigs for a 5-game series (in 4-days). Earlier this month, Pawtucket and Scranton/WB met for a 4-game home and home series that included a split in Moosic, PA on May 3 & 4 before the PawSox posted back-to-back 2-0 shutout victories over the RailRiders on Evil Empire weekend at McCoy on May 5 & 6.

TV Time – This evening marks the first of four NESN telecasts from McCoy this season. The others are June 21 vs. Buffalo, August 13 vs. Norfolk, and August 16 vs. Durham. The PawSox radio duo of Josh Maurer and Will Flemming move into the NESN booth tonight while Mik Monaco and Jim Cain handle the radio call. This homestand is ripe with television exposure as the PawSox will be on YurView on COX throughout for the first of 10 such telecasts this Friday night vs. Lehigh Valley at 7:05 pm. And then myRITV will be beaming all weekend games vs. the IronPigs starting with Saturday’s make-up at 4:05 pm (myRITV will also showcase the PawSox Hall of Fame induction ceremonies of and Mike Tamburro between games of the twinbill on Saturday) and concluding with Sunday’s 1:35 pm also on myRITV throughout Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA. The PawSox will have 42 of their 70 scheduled home games televised this season on either myRITV, YurView on COX, Spectrum TV3 in the Worcester area, and NESN.

Unfamiliar Territory – Pawtucket and Scranton/WB are traditionally two of the top contenders in thbe IL North division. In fact, over the past dozen seasons either Scranton/WB (9 times) or Pawtucket (2 times) has won the IL North regular-season pennant 11 times in those 12 years. The only other club to win the IL North during that span is Syracuse in 2014. However, coming into tonight, the 6th-place (last-place) PawSox have lost 4 in a row to match their longest losing streak of the season (also from May 7-10) while the 5th-place RailRiders come to town on a 3-game losing skid. A PawSox (17-22) win tonight would move them into a virtual tie with Scranton/WB (19-22).

The 2018 Season-Series vs. Scranton/WB – The PawSox have a 3 games to 1 lead in the season-series over Scranton/WB including a 2-0 mark here at McCoy. Just over two weeks ago, the clubs played here at McCoy on the weekend of May 5 & 6 with the PawSox posting a pair of 2-0 victories. The winner on May 5 was (7 IP) with relief help from (1 IP) and to (1 IP). On May 6 it was with the victory (5+ innings) followed by (3 IP) and SV to (1 IP). The previous two nights in Moosic, PA, the teams had traded 1-run victories. On May 3, in the first meeting between these two long time rivals, the RailRiders earned a walk-off, 4-3 victory with a run in the bottom of the 9th after the Sox had rallied to tie the game with a run in the top half of the inning. On May 4 the Sox gained the split in Moosic by scoring twice in the 8th to snap a 3-3 tie and then holding Scranton/WB to only one run in the bottom of the 9th for a 5-4 win.

A Tough Weekend – Pawtucket returns home after suffering a 3-game sweep in Rochester over the weekend. The Sox lost games by scores of 2-0, 2-1, and 3-0 as they managed just 13 hits total (9 singles, 3 doubles, and 1 homerun by ) in the three games. The Sox were blanked on both Friday and Sunday and have now been shutout a league-high 8 times this season. Last year they were shutout a total of 9 times and didn’t suffer their 8th shutout loss until August 26 (Game #133).

NEXT ON TAP - The probable pitching match-ups for the remainder of the series vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at McCoy:

Tues. 6:15 pm RHP Chance Adams (1-2, 4.69) vs. RHP (1-2, 4.06) Wed. 6:15 pm LHP Justus Sheffield (0-1, 2.16) vs. RHP Chandler Shepherd (2-3, 4.21) Thur. 11:05 am LHP Josh Rogers (3-3, 2.98) vs. RHP Justin Haley (1-5, 3.63)

What Have You Done For Me Lately – Pawtucket has lost 4 straight (they also lost 4 in a row from May 7-10) and they need a win tonight to avoid their longes losing streak since an 8-game losing streak last July 29 – August 6. The PawSox have also dropped 10 of their last 12 games following a 3-game winning streak from May 4-6 that equaled their longest winning streak of the season (also 3 straight from April 20-22). Pawtucket has won 4 of their last 5 at home, however, dating back to May 2.

Dustin Pedroia Off Tonight – Red Sox secondbaseman will not play for the PawSox tonight. He has played three games thus far on his 20-day (max) injury rehab assignment with the Pawtucket Red Sox that began on May 14. Last Monday night (May 14) in Pawtucket, Dustin went 1-for-3 with a run scored playing 5-innings at 2B. He was slated to play 2B again on Tuesday night but the game was rained-out at McCoy. He was the DH on Friday in Rochester (0-for-2 with 2 walks) and on Saturday played 6 innings at 2B going 0-for-3.

Dustin has been on Boston’s disabled list all season following cartilage restoration surgery in his left knee last October. The 34-year- old Pedroia has a career big league average of .300 with 140 HR & 724 RBI in 1503 games (all with the Red Sox) during his 12 year Major League career. He is a 2-time champion (2007, 2013), the 2007 Rookie of the Year (when he hit .317), the 2008 American League MVP (batting .326 with a major league-high 54 doubles along with 17 HR & 83 RBI), a 4-time American League All-Star (2008-10, 2013), and a 4-time Gold Glove winner at 2B (2008, 2011, 2013 & 2014). He is one of only nine major league players ever to be named MVP, earn Rookie of the Year, win Gold Glove Awards, and win a World Series. Dustin’s .991 fielding pct. at 2B is currently the best in American League history (minimum 650 games). Pedroia was an All-Star for the PawSox in 2006 when he hit .305 in 111 games while playing mainly at (74 games at SS and 33 games at 2B). He was promoted to Boston and made his MLB debut on August 22, 2006. Since then he has played 1503 games with the Red Sox and 5 games with the PawSox…the first two on August 14 & 15 of 2010 at McCoy Stadium vs. Buffalo while rehabbing a broken left foot (going 1-for-6) and then during this current rehab stint that started on May 14 (1-for-8 with 2 walks & a run scored).

Other Rehabbers Joining the Fun - The PawSox are expected to employ their 9th different Red Sox player on an injury rehab assignment already this season when RHP Hector Velazquez soon joins Pawtucket…In addition to Pedroia and reliever Tyler Thornburg, who are continuing their current rehabs, the PawSox added reliever (right shoulder strain) on Friday and RHP Hector Velazquez (low back strain) possibly tonight on rehab assignments from Boston. The complete list of Major League rehabbers with the PawSox - just six+ weeks into the season include: LHP Drew Pomeranz (now back in Boston), RHP (twice but now back in Boston), LHP Bobby Poyner (optioned to Pawtucket but recalled again to Boston), INF (since returned to Boston), RHP Tyler Thornburg (twice), INF/OF (now back with Boston), 2B Dustin Pedroia, RHP Austin Maddox, and (soon) RHP Hector Velazquez.

Stay at Home This Time – Pawtucket has played only 6 home games thus far in May (May 1 & 2, 5 & 6, and 14 & 16) compared to 12 road games this month. However, that changes quite dramatically starting tonight as the PawSox will play 15 of their next 21 games at home between May 21 – June 10. The Sox have been in the midst of brief stays at home this month. They began May with a 3-game homestand vs. Rochester (April 30 – May 2), had a 2-game homestand vs. Scranton/WB later that weekend (May 5 & 6), and most recently a 2-game homestand vs. Buffalo (May 14 & 16). Pawtucket finally enjoys an extended homestand this week when they play 9-games over 8-days starting tonight vs. Scranton/WB (4-games) and then later in the week and through the holiday weekend vs. Lehigh Valley (5-games) including a make-up doubleheader this Saturday at 4:05 pm vs. the IronPigs. The PawSox are 10-8 at home compared to 7-14 on the road.

Series Situation – Pawtucket’s only series victory in May was a 2-game sweep at home vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 5 & 6. They have lost four series and split the other two thus far this month. Their last series victory of more than two games came when they won 2 of 3 in Buffalo from April 27-29. Overall the PawSox are 4-7-3 in their first 14 series of the season (4 wins, 7 losses, and 3 splits).

Below Ground – The PawSox (now at 17-22) are a season-low 5-games below .500. It is their lowest point since they ended last year with a 67-75 record. On May 6 the Sox had matched their season-high of 3-games over the .500 mark (at 15-12) from April 28 when they were 11-8. They have not been 4-games above .500 since last July 20 (50-46). The Sox went over .500 on April 21 for the first time since last July 30 when they were 54-53.

First to Last – The PawSox had moved into sole possession of 1st-place atop the IL North on May 6. They remained there for two days, but are now in last (6th-place) and -5½ GB of front-running Lehigh Valley (their largest deficit of the season).

First Come First Served – Some early trends for the PawSox thus far…they are 12-2 when they score first in a game, 14-0 when they lead after 6-innings, and 14-3 when they score more than 3 runs in a game. Conversely, the Sox are 5-20 when the opponent scores first, 2-19 when trailing after 6-innings, and 3-19 when they score 3 runs or less in a game.

Defensive – Last year the PawSox led the International League with a .987 fielding pct. while making a league-low 64 errors on the season (both new franchise-records). This season, however, the Sox are last in the league with a .975 field pct. and have committed the 2nd most errors in the IL (34 errors in 1369 total chances).

Busy May - The PawSox are in the second half of a busy May at 6-12. have posted a 3.51 ERA this month (60 ER in 153.2 IP) while batters are hitting .222 (129-for-580) with 11 HR and 54 runs in 18 May games (for an average of 3 runs per game). The Sox are slated to now play 30 games in 31 days in May (including a make-up doubleheader this Saturday at 4:05 pm at McCoy) with just one scheduled off-day (May 17) during the entire month. 15 games this month will be at McCoy and 15 on the road with all but the final three coming against IL North division clubs. Pawtucket plays Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 8 times (3-1 thus far), Lehigh Valley 8 times (0-3), and played Rochester 5 times (1-4), Syracuse 4 times (1-3) and Buffalo 2 times (1-1) to cover most of May. After facing each of their IL North rivals from April 27 through Memorial Day May 28, the final three games of the month will be at IL South foe Norfolk from May 29-31.

House of Horrors - PNC Field has been more like PAIN Field for the PawSox in recent times as the Sox have lost 13 of their last 15 games in Moosic. The Sox are 1-1 this year at PNC (splitting a 2-game set from May 5-6). Pawtucket went 1-10 last year at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre – their only win coming last June 24 (8-0) – and dropped their final two games at PNC in August of 2016 so it adds up to 2-13 in their last 15 in Moosic. Overall last season the Sox went 5-13 vs. the RailRiders (1-10 in but 4-3 in Pawtucket).

Dynasties - The Red Sox and (especially the) Yankee Triple-A affiliates have “owned” the International League North Division over the past 12 seasons as either Scranton/WB (9 times) or Pawtucket (2 times) has won the IL North regular-season pennant during 11 of those 12 years. The only other club to win the IL North during that span is Syracuse in 2014. While Scranton/WB has earned 9 division titles, they finally won another Governors’ Cup Championship in September of 2016 to go with their only other Cup Championship in 2008. The RailRiders lost to Durham in the Cup Finals last season. Pawtucket has captured two Governors’ Cups in the last six years and both came when the Sox qualified for the IL Playoffs as a (2012 & 2014).

The Real Evil Empire – Pawtucket has lost the season-series with the RailRiders four years in a row. The PawSox went 5-13 last year, 7-9 vs. Scranton/WB in 2016, 6-13 in 2015, and 5-11 in 2014. The PawSox won the 2013 season-series over Scranton/WB, 11- 5. Those 11 victories vs. the RailRiders in 2013 represented Pawtucket’s most in a single-season vs. the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre franchise since they became a Yankee affiliate in 2007. The PawSox won the season-series over the RailRiders in each of the 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons after four straight non-winning years vs. Scranton/WB from 2007-2010 (one tie and three losers). The Sox finished 2-14 vs. the Yanks in 2007, 8-8 in 2008 (and then 1-3 in the 2008 playoffs), 4-12 in 2009, and 7-9 in 2010. Since then the Sox have gone 10-6 vs. Scranton/WB in 2011, 9-7 in 2012 (3-1 in the playoffs en route to winning the Governors’ Cup), 11-5 in 2013, but 5-11 in 2014, 6-13 in 2015, 7-9 in 2016, and 5-13 in 2017.

Bring Back the Red Barons - The PawSox had dominated the former Scranton/WB Red Barons over parts of three years (2004-2006) before SWB became a Yankee affiliate going 23-4 in their last 27 meetings while SWB was a Phillies' affiliate.

April Comes up a Winner – The PawSox posted a winning April for the 6th time in the last 8 years as they finished the month with an 11-10 record and in 2nd-place in the IL North (-2 GB of front-running Syracuse). Pawtucket has had just one losing month of April since 2010 and that came last year (10-12). The Sox hit .233 in April with 16 HR in 21 games while pitchers were 11-10 with a 3.51 ERA along with a league-leading 230 in 190 innings.

Throwing Strikes – Pawtucket pitchers are 2nd in the International League with 366 strikeouts (Durham leads with 415). Sox hurlers have posted games of 20 (April 9), 18 (April 20), 15 (twice), 14 (twice), 13, 12, 11 (twice), and 10 (seven times) this season.

Working – The PawSox have played an IL-high six extra inning games already this season and they are 5-1 in those. Pawtucket has played five overtime games at home (winning 4 of those 5 extra inning games at McCoy).

Blanketed – The PawSox have been shutout a league-high 8 times this season. Last year it took until Game #133 on August 26 before the Sox were shutout for the 8th time (3-0 vs. Lehigh Valley). Pawtucket was blanked 9 times total in 2017. They went 18-9 in shuout games last year. They are 3-8 in shutout games thus far in 2018.

A Look Back Before We Go Forth – Pawtucket finished 67-75 last year and in 4th-place in the IL North for the second straight season. They dropped to a season-low 9-games under .500 on August 26 at 62-71. On July 18, 2017 the PawSox were a season-best 6-games over .500 at 50-44. Pawtucket finished 34-36 in games played at McCoy Stadium last season. Thus they finished with just their second losing season at McCoy in the last 8 years. The Sox went 33-39 on the road.

BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM – Portland (15-26) – The (AA) fell at Altoona, 12-3 yesterday. Dedgar Jimenez (1-3) was the starter and loser – 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO. Jeremy Rivera went 2-for-4 with a solo HR (#3). Salem (20-20) – The (A) swept a doubleheader at home vs. Wilmington by identical 7-3 scores yesterday. Darwinzon Hernandez (3-1) was the winner in Game 1 – 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO. Jordan Procyshen was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored while Tyler Hill added 2 hits including a solo HR (#1). Jared Oliver (2-1) earned the win in Game 2 with 3 hitless innings of relief. led the offense with 3 hits, 1 RBI and 2 runs while drilled 2 doubles good for 3 RBI.

Greenville (10-31) – The (A) had their game at Augusta suspended in the 2nd inning due to rain. The game was tied at 1-1. It will be resumed on May 29. Greenville is at Asheville tonight.

The Sox used 57 players in 2016, 62 different players in 2015, and they employed 61 different players during the 2014 regular-season (that number rose to 66 players including the post-season). The club-record is 70 different players set in in both 1995 and 2006. Pawtucket promoted 20 players to Boston in 2016, 23 in 2015, and 25 different players in 2014.
